A finite element program was developed using line elements for simulating the stretch/draw forming operation of an arbitrarily-shaped plane-strain section. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation is employed, introducing a minimum plastic work path assumption for each time step. Geometric and material nonlinearities are also considered within each time step. The finite element equation is based on the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshes without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The membrane approximation is adopted under the plane stress assumption. The sheet material is assumed to obey a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive law. The developed program was tested in the die-tryout of typical automotive inner panels. In order to determine a single friction coefficient and boundary length, FEM results and measurements of thinning for a stretched section of final die were compared. After finding analysis parameters, the sheet forming operations of original and final die designs were simulated. Excellent agreement between measured and computed thickness strains was obtained and the developed program was able to identify die designs which were rejected during die tryout.

The measurements of heat transfer and pressure drop were performed on ripple tube with air flow. The results with the tube were compared with the performance of smooth tube. The enhancements in heat transfer coefficient for ripple tube, being compared with smooth tube, was ranged from 7.4 to 39 percent. The local Nusselt number for the inner fin tube, being compared with that for smooth tube, varied from 7.4% to 39%, while the corresponding increase in friction factors were 4.1 to 8.1%. One of the most direct indications of Nusselt number of ripple tube is given as following equation: $$Nu=0.061Re^{0.75}Pr^{0.4}(Tb/Tw)^{0.5}$$ We can see that Nusselt number for ripple tube in this experiment is consistent with the theoretical one taken from Walkinson's equation at Reynolds number range from 8,000 to 20,000.
A series of parametric study was performed for the investigation on the influence of analysis parameters to the solution behavior in the elastic-plastic-static analysis of several sheet metal forming processes, such as deflection by a point force under plane strain and axisymmetric conditions, plane strain bending by a punch, axisymmetric stretching by a punch, axisymmetric bulging by hydraulic pressure, and axisymmetric deep drawing by a punch. The parameters considered are kind of element, number of elements, integration scheme for elemental equation and friction coefficient. Results obtained for different selections of those parameters were compared with each other, experimental measurements and analytical solution.
Automobile wiper blades are generally treated with chlorine to lower their friction coefficient with the windshield surface. This treatment could affect the crosslink density measurement of rubber vulcanizates, a material used in windshield wipers, which would consequently alter its chemical and physical properties. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of chlorination on crosslink density measurements of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates using a vehicle wiper blade. A method for determining the degree of chlorination was developed where the interaction parameter between the rubber and the swelling solvent was corrected. A decrease in the rubber sample swelling ratio was observed upon chlorination, and the chlorination penetrated less than 1% of the sample thickness. The chlorinated NR was assumed to be chloroprene rubber (CR), which was used to correct the interaction parameter. The results showed the CR contributed approximately 7% to the parameter.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of the free stream turbulence intensity and Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow characteristics In the linear turbine cascade. Profiles of the time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress were measured in the turbine cascade passage. The static pressure and heat transfer distributions on the blade suction and pressure surfaces were also measured. The experiments were made for the Reynolds number based on the chord length, Rec = $2.2{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and the free stream turbulence intensity, $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% to 9.1 %. The uniform heat flux boundary condition on the blade surface was created using the gold film Intrex and the surface temperature was measured by liquid crystal, while hot wire probes were used for the flow measurements. The results show that the free stream turbulence promotes the boundary layer development and delays the flow separation point on the suction surface. It was found that the boundary layer flows on the suction surface for all Reynolds numbers tested with $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% are laminar. It was also found that the heat transfer coefficient on the blade surface increases as the free stream turbulence intensity increases and the flow separation point moves downstream with an increasing Reynolds number. The results of skin friction coefficients are in good agreement with the heat transfer results in that for $FSTI_1{\geq}2.6%$, the turbulent boundary layer separation occurs.
For the development of design chart for drilled shafts socketed into weathered zone, the 6 bi-directional pile load tests with load transfer measurements done in two in-situ sites were performed. Also, DCPTs were performed in each test point. Maximum unit skin frictions and maximum unit end bearing capacities from pile load test results were analyzed. Inter-relationships between DCPT's characteristics were also analyzed. In the soils, the inter-relationships of maximum unit skin friction and DCPT appeared so low. But in the weathered zones, inter-relationships between maximum unit skin friction / maximum unit end bearing capacity and DCPT were so high that the coefficient of correlation is over 0.70.

This study is derived relationships of the resistance coefficients of Darcy-Weisbach and Manning for flow resistance and the dimensionless velocity using many field measurements for 1,875 rivers consist of sand 179, gravel 992, cobble 651 and boulder 53 channels in natural rivers, respectively. The relationships of power law forms are developed as a function of flow discharge, friction slope, and relative submergence by the regression and the semi-empirical method. The measurements distribution of Manning resistance coefficients by the Box-Whisker Plots show the values which ranges from 0.004~0.151 for sand, 0.008~0.250 for gravel, 0.015~0.327 for cobble, 0.023~0.444 for boulder in natural rivers, respectively. Relationships of these semi-empirical and resistance coefficients will be useful to give information in hydraulic engineering.
PURPOSES : This study is to predict the Sound Pressure Level(SPL) obtained from the Noble Close ProXimity(NCPX) method by using the Extended Kalman Filter Algorithm employing the taylor series and Linear Regression Analysis based on the least square method. The objective of utilizing EKF Algorithm is to consider stochastically the effect of error because the Regression analysis is not the method for the statical approach. METHODS : For measuring the friction noise between the surface and vehicle's tire, NCPX method was used. With NCPX method, SPL can be obtained using the frequency analysis such as Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT), Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and Constant Percentage Bandwidth(CPB) Analysis. In this research, CPB analysis was only conducted for deriving A-weighted SPL from the sound power level in terms of frequencies. EKF Algorithm and Regression analysis were performed for estimating the SPL regarding the vehicle velocities. RESULTS : The study has shown that the results related to the coefficient of determination and RMSE from EKF Algorithm have been improved by comparing to Regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS : The more the vehicle is fast, the more the SPL must be high. But in the results of EKF Algorithm, SPLs are irregular. The reason of that is the EKF algorithm can be reflected by the error covariance from the measurements.

The hydrodynamic model is used to analyse the sea surface elevations derived from the SEASAT altimetry over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Periods of significant atmospheric disturbances during the SEASAT mission are selected for this study. These includes periods of July 28-August 2 and August 18-21. Meteoroloeical forcing functions, which are needed for the sea model, are derived by a 2-dimensional grid that is governed by a set of theoretical and empirical meteorological relations over the study area. Ocean tides in this area are known to be significant and introduce a large spatial and time variability in the sea surface elevation. Consequently major tidal constituents of M$_2$, S$_2$, $K_1$ and $O_1$ are included in the computation. With some knowledge of other known sea surface phenomena e.g.(body tide, loading tide), the time-dependent sea surface variation is predicted to com-pare statistically with the satellite altimetric measurements and to achieve the objective of ocean bottom friction study. From a total of 10 SEAST orbit tracks, a friction coefficeint was found ranging from 0.0023 to 0.0027.
Pile load tests using Osterberg cells (O-cell) were conducted on cast-in-place concrete piles founded in oil sand fill and in situ oil sand at an industrial plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Interpreted pile test results show that very high pile shaft resistance (with the Bjerrum-Burland or Beta coefficient of 2.5-4.5) against oil sand could be mobilized at small relative displacements of 2-3% of shaft diameter. Finite element simulations based on linear elastic and elasto-plastic models for oil sand materials were used to analyze the pile load test measurements. Two constitutive models yield comparable top-down load versus pile head displacement curves, but very different behaviour in mobilization of pile shaft and end bearing resistances. The elasto-plastic model produces more consistent matching in both pile shaft and end bearing resistances whereas the linear elastic under- and over-predicts the shaft and end bearing resistances, respectively. The mobilization of high shaft resistance in oil sand under pile load is attributed to the very dense and interlocked structure of oil sand which results in high matrix stiffness, high friction angle, and high shear dilation.
