Lode Location Management Using RSSI Regression Analysis in Wireless Sensor Network (RSSI의 회귀 분석을 이용한 무선센서노드의 위치관리)

  • One of the key technical challenges of wireless sensor network (WSN) is location management of sensor nodes. Typical node location management methods use GPS, ultrasonic sensors or RSSI. In this paper we propose a new location management method which adopts regression analysis of RSSI measurement to improve the accuracy of sensor node position estimation. We also evaluated the performance of proposed method by comparing the experimental results with existing scheme. According to the results, our proposed method, LM-RAR, shows better accuracy than existing location management scheme using RSSI and Friis' equation.

Comparative Study on the Power Transfer Efficiency of Magnetic Resonance and Radio Frequency Wireless Power Transmission

  • In this paper, the power transfer efficiencies (PTEs) of magnetic resonance (MR) wireless power transmission (WPT) and radio frequency (RF) WPT are compared as a function of the distances between resonators (or antennas). The PTE of the C-loaded loop resonators during MR WPT was theoretically calculated and simulated at 6.78MHz, showing good agreement. The PTE of the patch antennas, whose area is the same as the C-loaded loop resonator during MR WPT, was theoretically calculated using the Friis equation and the equation by N. Shinohara and simulated at 5.8 GHz. The three results from the Friis equation, the equation by N. Shinohara, and from a full wave simulation are in strong agreement. The PTEs, when using the same size resonators and antennas are compared by considering the distance between the receiver and transmitter. The compared results show that the MR WPT PTE is higher than that of the RF WPT PTE when the distance (r) between the resonators (or antennas) is shorter. However, the RF WPT PTE is much higher than that of the MR WPT PTE when the distance (r) between the resonators (or antennas) is longer since the RF WPT PTE is proportional to $r^{-2}$ while the MR WPT PTE is proportional to $r^{-6}$.

Effects of a Metal Plane on a Meandered Slot Antenna for UHF RFID Applications

  • In this paper, the effects of a metal plane on the performance of a meandered slot RFID antenna are evaluated in a real environment, and 3 metal plane cases are considered (the most likely scenarios in which metal conductive materials are placed near the tag antenna). The metal plane effects can be categorized as matching degradation and antenna gain variation. First, matching degradation due to the antenna's induced mutual impedance is experimentally investigated. In addition, the gain variation is investigated to figure out the change in the radiation characteristics. With the derived antenna parameters, the read range is calculated with the Friis transmission equation and measured to analyze the effects of a metal plane on RFID system performance. The calculated and measured read range varies from 9.3 m to 19.1 m as the distance between the RFID antenna and the metal plane changes.

  • Most of campus vehicle management systems, so far, simply manages coming in or go out of vehicles, issuing a parking tickets. Recently some of them use RFID tags to count total numbers of cars in the campus, excluding exact parking position management. In this paper we propose a new campus vehicle management system using wireless sensor network location management scheme. This system adopts RSSI based location management method with some performance improvement technique. According to the experimental result, this proposed scheme can be used to implement an effective campus vehicle management system.

  • A ray tracing method to analyze the propagation channel characteristics for a millimeter-wave indoor wireless communication system is presented. Reflected rays from planar as well as rough surfaces are included. Transmitted rays though a thin dielectric slab are considered. Maps representing received power levels and RMS delay spread from a transmitter in a rectangular room are shown. The received power levels in the empty room for bottom's roughness factors of 0 and 0.13 are represented. The simulation results are well consistent with the calculation of Friis equation with reflection coefficient. Any size of furniture the shape of plane form can be positioned anywhere in the room.

Antenna Gain Measurement in Time Domain (시간 영역에서 안테나 이득 측정 연구)

  • There are several antenna calibration methods, so-called 3-Antenna Method, Standard Site Method, and Standard Antenna Method which measure the antenna gains or antenna factors. These methods yield the free space or quasi free space antenna gains in only the frequency domain. In this paper, an antenna calibration method using the time domain in the open area test site is discussed. The reflected waves due to the ground are traced in the time domain. After they are removed by the time gating function of network analyzer, the free space transmission coefficient $S_{21}$ is extracted. Such a way is applied to the broad band horn antenna ranging 1 GHz to 18 GHz, and the free space gains are obtained by Friis transmission equation. The method is checked by Standard Site Method in open area test site. The results show comparatively good agreement except for 18 GHz.

  • In vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), vehicles sense information on emergency incidents (e.g., accidents, unexpected road conditions, etc.) and propagate this information to following vehicles and a server to share the information. However, this process of emergency message propagation is based on multiple broadcast messages and can lead to broadcast storms. To address this issue, in this work, we use a novel approach to detect the vehicles that are farthest away but within communication range of the transmitting vehicle. Specifically, we discuss a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based linear back-off (SLB) scheme where vehicles implicitly detect their relative locations to the transmitter with respect to the SNR of the received packets. Once the relative locations are detected, nodes that are farther away will set a relatively shorter back-off to prioritize its forwarding process so that other vehicles can suppress their transmissions based on packet overhearing. We evaluate SLB using a realistic simulation environment which consists of a NS-3 VANET simulation environment, a software-based WiFi-IP gateway, and an ITS server operating on a separate machine. Comparisons with other broadcasting-based schemes indicate that SLB successfully propagates emergency messages with latencies and hop counts that is close to the experimental optimal while reducing the number of transmissions by as much as 1/20.
