Stability Test Using Froude Scaling Method of Emergency Flotation System for Helicopter (Froude Scaling 기법을 적용한 헬기 비상부주 장비 해수면 안정성 입증 시험)

  • A marine helicopter should remain sufficiently upright to permit safe evacuation of all personnel with a flotation system. And the rule requires that after ditching in water, the adequate flotation time will allow the occupants to leave the rotorcraft. To this end, stability test of the emergency flotation system for Korean marine helicopter was performed by using "Froude scaling method" in water tank. Test configuration and conditions were determined in consideration of the helicopter loading condition and related specifications. Test results meet the stability requirements at sea state code 4 and sea state code 2 with puncture conditions.

  • In this study, smoke movement in tunnel fire with natural and longitudinal ventilation systems has been investigated. Reduced-scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using 14.55kW fire source with a wick and experimental data is obtained with 1/18 model tunnel test. Temperature profiles were measured under the ceiling and vertical direction along the center of the tunnel and poisonous gas was measured at emergency exit point. The results show that refuge time for 225m intervals of emergency exit in case of natural ventilation systems is 256 seconds and critical velocity for sufficient back-layer prevention is 2.8m/s for fire strength of 20MW.

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fires according to vepntilation method. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using gasoline pool fires ranging from 6.6 to 10 cm in diameter corresponding to total heat release rate from 0.714 to 2.5 kW. Temperatures near the ceiling were lowered by installing the vent, and much lowered by operating fan compared wiht tile case without vent. In case of forced ventilation, the exhaust fan was more effective than the intake fan. Vertical temperatures at the upper part of the tunnel were also lowered by installing the vent. But, when suction fan was operated, temperatures at the lower part of the tunnel were higher than that without vent.

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze an effect of tunnel slope on critical velocity. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using ethanol pool fire. Square pools ranging from 2.47 to 12.30㎾ were used experiments. Critical velocity varied with one-fourth power of the heat release rate. As the slope of the tunnel increases the critical velocity comes to be fast due to the increase of the chimney effect.

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments as the alternative to a real-scale fire test were conducted to understand fire properties in tunnel, and their results were compared with those of numerical simulation. The 1/20 scale experiments were conducted under the Froude scaling since smoke movement in tunnel is governed by buoyancy farce. A numerical simulations were on performed 3D unstructured meshes with PISO algorithm and buoyant plume models. Results showed that data was in reasonable agreement with the numerical data of smoke velocity, temperature distribution, and clear height.

  • In this study reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fire with jet fan, The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the froude scaling using gasoline pool fire range from 6.6 to 12.5 cm in diameter with total heat release rate from 0.714 to 4.77 kW. In the case of fires under the 2.5kW, backlaying was reduced about 40cm and smoke was effectively controled in downstream of the fan when operating the fan. The smoke layer was moved down and the ceiling temperature was decreased compared to that of without fan case in upstream of the fan, but the temperature in the lower part of the tunnel was increased.

  • The Froude scaling between the prototype and the model was tried to estimate the necessary ventilation rate for non-isothermal concentrated fume from the semi-closed inner space. Based on the non-dimensional similitude equations derived from the Zukoski plume rise analysis, the scaling experiments were done to verify the relationship of the non-dimensional energy release rate and the non-dimensional mass flow rate by using two different scaled volume models, model A ($1\;m{\times}1\;m{\times}1\;m$) and model B ($0.5\;m{\times}0.5\;m{\times}0.5\;m$). The experimental results showed that the theoretical similitude between the models is acceptable for the prediction of ventilation rate of the concentrated fume. The maximum energy release rate used for the experiments was $20\;kW/m^3$. In the experimental range, the similitude between the energy release rate and the ventilation mass flow rate was well defined and the necessary ventilation rates were 20-30% higher than the stoichiometric ventilation mass flow rate. Based on results of current study, the design of the local air ventilation system can be improved by correcting the effects of buoyancy and diffusion of the non-isothermal concentrated fume.

  • In this study, the 1/20 reduced-scale experiments using Froude scaling were conducted to investigate the effect of longitudinal ventilation on the variation of burning rate in tunnel fires. The methanol square pool fires with heat release rate ranging from 3.57 kW to 10.95 kW were used. The burning rate of fuel was obtained by measured mass using load cell and temperature distribution were measured by K-type theomocouples in order to investigate smoke movement. The wind tunnel was connected with one side of the tested tunnel, and logitudinal ventilation velocity in the tested tunnel was controlled by power of the wind tunnel. In methanol fire case, the increase in ventilation velocity decreased the turning rate due to the direct cooling of fire plume. For the same dimensionless velocity(V), homing rate decreased as the size of pool fire increased.

  • In this study, the 1/20 reduced-scale experiments using Froude scaling were conducted to investigate the ventilation velocity of the variation of burning rate in tunnel fires. The heptane square pool fire with heat release rate ranging from 3.71~15.6 kW were used. The burning rate of fuel was obtained by measuring mass using load cell and temperature distributions were measured by K-type theomocouples in order to investigate smoke movement. The ventilation velocity in the tested tunnel was controlled by inverter of the wind tunnel. In heptane pool fire case, the increase in ventilation velocity incresed the burning rate due to the direct supply of oxygen to the fire plume. For the same dimensionless velocity($\bar{V}$), burning rate increased as the size of pool fire decreased.

Theoretical Study on the Behavior of Momentum-controlled Buoyant Jet and Flame of Hydrogen (운동량에 의해 제어되는 수소 부양 제트 및 화염의 거동에 관한 이론적 해석)

  • Hydrogen safety is one of the key technical issue with growing attention on utilization of hydrogen energy. This study is aimed to predict behavior of momentum-controlling buoyant jet and flame caused by hydrogen leakage from a high pressured tank. Approximate solutions were derived for the case of turbulent buoyant jet and diffusion flame in still air. In case of hydrogen jet with low Froude number (100-4000), computed jet trajectories were compared with experimental data and showed good agreement with them. Jet and flame trajectories and flame length of hydrogen are predicted and compared with the buoyant flame of propane. The results well show that buoyancy is dominant in the range of low Froude number, while initial momentum is dominant in the range of high Froude number. That effect is more distinct for hydrogen flame than the case of propane.
