  • In this study, we present the preparation and characterization of oxidized fullerene and fullerene dimer [$C_{120}$]. From the XRD data, other weak peaks with pristine fullerene [$C_{60}$] peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for fullerene dimer [$C_{120}$]. SEM micrographs for the fullerene dimer [$C_{120}$] indicated that practically all the surface state was shown the drastic morphology changes and its outer surface is clearly visible and resulted in clogging and frost-like formation. From the MALDI-TOF mass spectra, the differences in the spectra recorded on two kinds of fullerene are due to the oxidation including chemical bonding and bridging between the $C_{60}$ molecules. We also obtained additional information from FT-IR spectra on functional component on the chemically modified surface of oxidized fullerene and fullerene dimer [$C_{120}$].

  • In this review, the properties of buckminsterfullerene and its organic and polymeric reactions were focused. In addition, polymer blending with $C_{60}$ will be briefly introduced. As soon as $C_{60}$ was discovered, chemists put their efforts to explore its reactivity with other compounds. The knowledge of the organic reactions with $C_{60}$ was extended to construct different types of fullerene polymers such as side chain fullerene polymers, main chain fullerene polymers, star shaped fullerene polymers, and dendritic fullerene polymers.

  • This cycloaddition of [70]fullerene with methyl azidoacetate in benzene under ultrasonic irradiated condition afforded the closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene derivative, which was unusual product of cycloaddition to the 5,6-junction of fullerene. Its structure was determined by FAB-MS, UV-vis, $^1H-$ and $^{13}C$-NMR spectral data. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films were self-assembled using the layer-by-layer method on the reactive of glass slides functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. The functionalized glass slides were alternately soaked in the solution containing closed the [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene and 4-aminothiophenoxide/hexanethiolate-protected gold nanoparticles. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films have grown up to 5 layers depending on the immersion time. The self-assembled nanoparticle multilayer films were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy showed that the surface plasmon band of gold at 527 nm gradually became more evident as successive layers were added to the films.

  • As the use of carbon fullerene increases in the chemical industry, the concern over its biological and toxicological effects is also increasing. In this study, the suspension of carbon fullerene (C60) in phosphate buffered saline was prepared and toxicity was investigated using cultured RAW 264.7 and in intraperitoneally injected mice, respectively. The average size of carbon fullerene in the suspension was $53.7{\pm}26.5nm$ when determined by particle size analyzer. Cell viability was significantly decreased by the exposure of carbon fullerene ($0.25\sim2.00\;{\mu}g/ml$) for 96 hrs in the cultured RAW 264.7 cells. Intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH) level was also decreased compared to the level of the non-treated control group during the exposure period, while the level of nitric oxide was increased. When mice were intraperitoneally injected with carbon fullerene, serum cytokine levels of IL-1 and IL-6 were increased with the increased expression of inflammatory genes in peritoneal macrophage and T cell distribution in blood lymphocytes. The results suggested inflammatory responses were induced by carbon fullerene.

  • Fullerene-60 nanoparticles were used for studying their effect on the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) biodegradation efficiency of two potential polymer-degrading consortia comprising three bacterial strains each. At a concentration of 0.01% (w/v) in minimal broth lacking dextrose, fullerene did not have any negative influence upon the consortia growth. However, fullerene was found to be detrimental for bacterial growth at higher concentrations (viz., 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1%). Although addition of 0.01% fullerene into the biodegradation assays containing 5mg/ml LDPE subsided growth curves significantly, subsequent analysis of the degraded products revealed an enhanced biodegradation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed breakage and formation of chemical bonds along with the introduction of ${\nu}C$-O frequencies into the hydrocarbon backbone of LDPE. Moreover, simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTG-DTA) revealed a higher number of decomposition steps along with a 1,000-fold decrease in the heat of reactions (${\Delta}H$) in fullerene-assisted biodegraded LDPE, suggesting the probable formation of multiple macromolecular byproducts. This is the first report whereby fullerene-60, which is otherwise considered toxic, has helped to accelerate the polymer biodegradation process of bacterial consortia.

  • Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were prepared with titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TNB) by a sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), specific surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution. XRD patterns of the composites showed that the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite contained a typical single and clear anatase phase. The surface properties shown by SEM present a characterization of the texture on Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites and showed a homogenous composition in the particles for the titanium sources used. The EDX spectra for the elemental identification showed the presence of C and Ti with strong Fe peaks for the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite. From the photocatalytic results, the excellent activity of the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites for degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation could be attributed to both the effects between photocatalytic reaction of the supported $TiO_2$, decomposition of the organometallic reaction by the Fe compound and energy transfer effects such as electron and light of the fullerene.

  • Recently a fullerene isoxazoline was reported as an example for nanoscale connectors in molecular electronic devices. The construction of nanoscale devices is a potentially important area of technology. By using the semiempirical PM3 calculation, we optimized the structures for two fullerene isoxazoline derivatives and thirteen regioisomers of the second addition of a nitride oxide to a fullerene isoxazoline derivative. Our results suggest that fullerene isoxazoline derivatives could be used as nanoscale connectors with the possibility of attaching of spacer units in a specific angle arrangement.

  • Fullerene oxide[$C_{60}(O)_n$, ($n{\geq}1$)] was synthesized by dissolving fullerene[$C_{60}$] and 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in toluene under refluxing condition for 5 h. Hybrid fullerene oxide-silver nanoparticle composites were synthesized by dissolving fullerene oxide and silver nitrate[$AgNO_3$] in diethylene glycol under ultrasonic irradiation for 3 h. The synthesized hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible[UV-vis] spectroscopy. The catalytic activity for the reduction of various nitroanilines[NAs] was identified by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The efficiency of the catalytic reduction by the synthesized hybrid nanocomposites has an order of 4-NA > 2-NA > 3-NA.
