  • Polymeric based nanomedicines have been developed for diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases in human body. The nanosized drug delivery systems having various structures such as micelles, nanogels, drug-conjugates, and polyplex were investigated for a great goal in pharmaceutics: increasing therapeutic efficacy for diseases and decreasing drug toxicity for normal tissues. The functional polymers used for constituting these drug delivery systems should have several favorable properties such as stimuli-responsibility and biodegrdability for controlled drug release, and solublization capacity for programmed drug encapsulation. This review discusses recent developments and trends of functional polymers (e.g., pH-sensitive polymers, biodegradable polymers, and cationic polymers) used for nanosized drug carriers.

  • Polymer architecture plays a great role in determining the properties of functional polymers. This lecture will explore the design and the synthesis of polymers with controlled architecture and functionality. Especially featured will be star and dendritic architectures where the functional group placement and the molecular shape can be controlled. This will be followed by examples of applications illustrated with a few model systems of functional polymers designed for use in areas such as organic electronics, catalysis, surface patterning, separation and molecular recognition, and polymer therapeutics.

  • Several polynorbornene or poly(norbornene-7-oxide) based functional block copolymers were synthesized by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with good molecular weight and polydispersity control. Some representative functional groups in these polymers are a nitrobenzoyl group or ferrocene. These polymers were subjected to various chemical modification reactions to give other block copolymers that contain novel functionality such as amine, diazonium salt, and diazo groups. The resulting polymers were characterized by various techniques such as GPC, NMR, UV-VIS, AFM, and cyclovotammography (CV).

  • The design and synthesis of new polymers is desirable to obtain materials with novel physical properties. Generally, these new polymers have their well-defined nature with the number of functional groups, molecular weight, polydispersity, and the presence or absence of branching being precisely controlledl. These polymers are mainly synthesized by living polymerizations to control of their structures. Among of various living polymerization Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been a field of intensive research in recent years1. (omitted)

  • A new aromatic diamine monomer containing benzoxazole substituents was prepared by a multi-step synthesis starting from 1,4-dibromo-2,5-difluorobenzene. This bulky and disc-shaped monomer was polymerized with commercial dianhydride monomers to give several different poly(amic acid)s with their inherent viscosities in the range of 0.24-0.35 dL/g. The prepared polymers were soluble in typical polar aprotic solvents. Thermal imidization to the corresponding polyimides were investigated by using FT-IR, DSC and TGA.

  • Two donor-acceptor-donor monomers such as 3,5-bis(4-bromophenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (BOB) and 3,5-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (TOT) incorporating electron transporting and hole blocking 1,2,4-oxadiazloe moiety were copolymerized with light emitting fluorene derivative via Suzuki polycondensation to afford two new polymers, PFBOB and PFTOT, respectively. The optical studies for polymers PFBOB and PFTOT revealed that the band gaps are 3.10 eV and 2.72 eV, respectively, and polymer PFBOB exhibited a deep-blue emission while polymer PFTOT showed blue emission in chloroform and as thin film. The photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (${\Phi}_f$) of polymers PFBOB and PFTOT in chloroform calculated against highly blue emitting 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA, ${\Phi}_f=0.90$) were 1.00 and 0.44, respectively.

  • Well defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers of poly(styrene-b-vinylbenzylphosphonic acid) (PS-b-PVBPA) were prepared by controlled radical polymerization technique, two-step hydrolysis reactions using trime-thylsilyl bromide from the corresponding phosphonic ethyl ester. By indirect, backward pH titration of the block copolymer, a good titration curve of a dibasic acid was observed. The IEC values obtained from both backward pH titration and volumetric back titration were almost identical. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) of the phosphonic acid containing block copolymer showed a high thermal stability up to $400^{\circ}C$.
