  • A concept of Modular GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) deck panel was proposed for bridge decks. The modular GFRP bridge deck system is comprised of main unit module and connector unit module with GFRP flanges and web. Its structural performance under static loading was evaluated and compared with the LUSAS finite element predictions. It was found that the presented GFRP modular panel was very efficient for use in bridges. The failure mode of the proposed GFRP deck was similar when compared with that of commercial other GFRP decks developed.

  • In order to investigate the relationship between the stiffness and structure of the automotive roof panels, two kinds of glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) roof panels without and with insert material were fabricated by resin transfer molding(RTM) method. The stiffness test was performed at the same condition as it of actual driving. The structural design and material selection for improving the recyclability of GFRP roof panels were also covered.

  • In this study, The fatigue properties of the GFRP composite panels of which core was made of the polymer mortar and both facings were reinforced by the high-tensile GFRP were surveyed. Composite-panel specimens consisted of polymer mortar core and GFRP compressive and tensile sides with various thickness were produced for an experimental study. Flexural fatigue tests were conducted to examine the correlation between the fatigue load and the fatigue life for various thickness of core and facings, and its results are presented. The correlation obtained in this study between the fatigue load and the fatigue life for various thickness arc in good agreement with the modified Miner's law.

  • The improved movable weir supplements the advantages and disadvantages of the rubber weir and the conduction gate. It consists of a stainless steel gate, air bags, and a steel clamping plate. The stainless steel gate is the main body of the weir, and the inflatable rubber sheet serves to support the steel gate. The steel clamping plate is typically in direct continuous contact with water, but this leads to corrosion issues that can reduce the life of the entire movable weir. In this study, a panel-type glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) clamping plate was designed and fabricated. The test results showed that the flexural load of the panel-type GFRP composite clamping plate was over twice that of the wings type GFRP clamping plate. The lowest moisture absorption value was obtained upon exposure to tap water, and exposure to other solutions showed similar values. Additionally, flexural load testing after exposure to an accelerated environment found the lowest residual loads of 80.51 % and 78.50 % at 50 and 100 days, respectively, for exposure to a $CaCl_2$ solution, while exposure to other environments showed residual failure loads of over 80 % at both 50 and 100 days.

  • This paper describes an experimental program to investigate the shear behavior of insulated concrete sandwich panels (CSPs) with different types of GFRP shear connector. The study included testing of 13 insulated CSP specimens with two types of surface conditions for extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation and various shapes of shear connectors. All specimens were loaded in direct shear by means of push-out and were consist of three concrete panels, two insulation layer and four rows of GFRP shear connectors. Load-relative slip between concrete panel and insulation response of CSP specimens has been established through push-out shear test. Test results indicate that the surface condition of insulation has a significant effect on the bond strength between concrete panel and insulation. The specimen used XPS foam with 10mm deep slot shows higher bond strength than those used XPS foam with meshed surface. Corrugated GFRP shear connectors show equivalent strength to grid GFRP shear connectors. Cross-sectional area and embedded length of shear connector have a notable effect on overall response and inplane shear strength of the CSP specimens.

  • Recently, sewer-pipe constructions replacing deteriorated pipes are currently underway in the downtown area. To resolve many problems in the conventional method of open-cut construction, lining-board system using light-weight GFRP panels is developed. The pultruded GFRP panels can be successfully used for the developed lining-board system as temporary decks and retaining walls in virtue of light weight, high strength and high durability. In this paper, the structural safety and serviceability of the lining-board system are examined through FE analyses and experiments. Further more, a field application of the lining-board system is presented. The field application shows that quality and environment of construction can be significantly improved.

  • This paper presents the flexural behavior of a hybrid Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer(GFRP)-steel decks for use in deteriorated bridge decks replacement. Static load tests were conducted to investigate the structural characteristics of the hybrid FRP-steel deck. The tested deck panel satisfied the design criteria. The failure mode of the hybrid deck was demonstrated ductility with deformation beyond initial yielding. The responses were compared with the ANSYS finite element predictions. It was found that the presented hybrid deck was efficient for use in bridges. The thickness of the hybrid deck may be decreased when compared to that of the all FRP deck with similar flexural rigidity.

  • Reinforced concrete structure can be strengthened by glass fiber reinforced plastic thin panels. The GFRP-Thin Panels are manufactured by pressing form and their application technique are similar to steel plates. The use of FGRP-Thin Panels presents several advantages. The advantages of this structural system are the case of application, the elimination of joint and corrosion at the epoxy-panel interface. This paper introduces the method of manufacturing about GFRP-Thin Panels, mechanical properties and the application of reinforced concrete structures.

  • The fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite panel, with the benefits of light weight, high strength, good corrosion resistance, and long-term durability, has been considered as one of the prosperous alternatives for structural retrofits and replacements. Although with these advantages, a further application of FRPs in bridge engineering may be restricted, and that is partly due to some unsatisfied thermal performance observed in recent studies. In this regard, Kansas Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted a field monitoring program on a bridge with glass FRP (GFRP) honeycomb hollow section sandwich panels. The temperatures of the panel surfaces and ambient air were measured from December 2002 to July 2004. In this paper, the temperature distributing behaviors of the panels are firstly demonstrated and discussed based on the field measurements. Then, a numerical modeling procedure of temperature fields is developed and verified. This model is capable of predicting the temperature distributions with the local environmental conditions and material's thermal properties. Finally, a parametric study is employed to examine the sensitivities of several temperature influencing factors, including the hollow section configurations, environmental conditions, and material properties.
