Spatial Characterization of Water Pollution in the Urban Stream Watershed (Gap Stream), Korea (도시하천(갑천) 유역에서 수질오염의 공간적 특성)

  • Spatial distribution of water pollution in the Gap Stream was investigated from October to November, 2005. Sampling was conducted three times including effluents discharged from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a dam reservoir during the low-flow period. As a typical urban stream, total nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen concentrations increased toward downstream. Ammonia concentration was the highest in the treated water of the wastewater treatment plant and the lowest nitrate concentration was found in the effluent of the dam reservoir. A part of soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) in total phosphorous was 22~54% in the upstream reach of WWTP in the Gap Stream whereas 68~73% in the downstream reach. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration ranged from 1.6 to $11.0{\mu}g/L$ and it tends to increase toward downstream except for WWTP effluent. As expected, untreated wastewater and WWTP effluent were suggested as the major sources of water pollution in the Gap Stream. In this study, the water pollution of the Gap Stream is a significant undergoing typical eutrophication, caused by excessive phosphorus and nitrogen nutrients from WWTP located in the watershed. As a result, the critical factor for the water pollution was evaluated to dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. Particularly, SRP is a most important for the eutrophication. It suggest that may occur in the most urban streams of Korean peninsula. Therefore, because the necessity of water pollution management in the urban stream, inorganic N and P nutrients should be included as an essential component of water quality criteria in the advanced water quality project of Korean Government by enforcing of water quality assessment and total maximum daily loads (TMDLs).

Distribution of Wildbirds According to Habitat Environment in Gap Stream (갑천의 서식지 환경에 따른 야생조류 분포에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage protect bird community in Gap stream. The survey was carried out over four sections by the line transect method and point counts method from September 2001 to August 2002. Natural stream region as Gasuwon Bridge - Mannyeon Bridge are observed birds were 11 orders 29 families 67 species, Artificial stream region as Mannyeon Bridge - Daedeok Bridge are observed birds were 6 orders 10 families 30 species, Daedeok Bridge - Wonchon Bridge are 8 orders 12 families 28 species, Wonchon Bridge - Gap Stream Bridge are 8 orders 18 families 40 species. All the observed birds in artificial stream region are 8 orders 19 families 47 species. Number of species in natural stream region was higher than artificial stream region owe to a various habitat environment such as forest, cultivated land, streamside forest, sandy plain, gravelly field, reedy field etc. and can not add with the interface and the usage of the human. Number of species in artificial stream region was lower than natural stream region owe to a simple habitat environment and the water ecosystem is severed with embankment block and grass plot with the land ecosystem. The furtherance of various habitat environment which considers the ecosystem like the natural stream as the water ecosystem is joined together with the land ecosystem is desired to attract various wildbirds in Gap stream. The design is desired with the maintenance of the stream to consider the stream corridor which plays ecological important role as connect the fragment habitats.

Analysis of Landscape Structure on the Impervious Cover of the Gap-Stream Watershed using FRAGSTATS (FRAGSTATS 모델을 이용한 갑천 유역의 불투수면 변화에 따른 경관 구조 분석)

  • An impervious cover in the watershed management has been used as effective indicators. It is a very useful barometer to measure the impacts of watershed development on aquatic systems. Hence, it is necessary to survey the impervious cover of a watershed and to develop an impervious cover model (ICM) for supporting best management practices. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the spatial patterns of the impervious cover, to calculate landscape indices using FRAGSTATS, and to develop an ICM in the Gap-stream watershed and its six sub-watersheds. The results showed that the impervious cover of the Gap-stream watershed increased from 4.9 % in 1975 to more than 11.2 % in 2000, the number of impervious cover fragments increased from 662 to 3,578, and the landscape shape index increased from 27.0796 to 91.1982. Fragmentation was severe within the Yudeungcheon downstream and the Gapcheon downstream of six sub-watersheds. This paper presented the results derived landscape indices to define landscape patterns and structure for the Gap-stream watershed. Our results indicate that altered land use might be influenced changes in landscape structure.

Ichthyofauna and Fish Community from the Gap Stream Water System, Korea (갑천수계의 어류상과 어류군집)

  • The ichthyofauna and fish community of the Gap stream water system were studied at 17 sites from March to December, 2000. It was confirmed the presence of 36 species,29 genera in 8 families. Twenty-five species in Cyprinidae was accounted for 69.4% of the total, four species in Cobitidae 11.1% of the total species number. The dominant species in the Gap stream water system was Zacco platypus (relative abundant 52.0%), the subdominant species was Carassius auratus (9.2%). The major dominant species in the each tributary of the Gap stream water system were Zacco platypus (Daejeon stream, 87.0%; Yoodeung stream, 41.5%; Gap stream, 47.5%). Number of Korean endemic species was 12 species in the Gap stream water system and that was a 24.5% of the total Korean endemic species. Ten rare species accounted for less than 0.3% of the total individual numbers. The mean species dominance, diversity and evenness indices of the fish community from the Daejeon stream were 0.76, 0.25 and 0.28, respectively: from the Yoodeong stream, 0.20, 0.65 and 0.83, respectively; from the Gap stream, 0.25, 0.83 and 0.77, respectively. The fish community of the Yoodeung stream was showed closer relationship to that of the Gap stream than to that of the Daejeon stream.

Assessment of Degree of Naturalness of Vegetation on the Riverine Wetland (하천습지의 식생학적 자연도 평가)

  • This study was carried out to suggest the baseline data necessary for vegetation restoration at riverine wetland within stream corridor. We used the prevalence index for wetland assessment by applying the method of weighted averages with index values based on five hydrophyte indicator status as defined by estimated probability occurred in wetland. We selected near nature and urbanized reach of Gap and Yanghwa streams as experimental site. Although two sites have some different disturbance and characteristics of watershed, they showed that similarity of vegetation community including three dominant species - Salix koreensis, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus - was very high. But in case of Yanghwa stream, various kinds of emergent plants along wetted condition were distinctly occurred, resulted from difference of hydrological regime and substrate, etc. Degree of naturalness of vegetation at the sampled areas indicated that near nature area of Gap stream and all area of Yanghwa stream were fitted as riverine wetland, while urbanized area of Gap stream has changed into upland condition. In conclusion assessment system using prevalence index would be considered an effective method for evaluating of natural states of riverine wetland, but further integrated consideration of physical, hydrological, and biological factors of stream process, and also with considering the difference between those qualitative data of vegetation community.

Comparison of Fish Distribution Characteristics by Substrate Structure in the 4 Streams (하상구조에 따른 4개 하천의 어류 분포 특성 비교)

  • This study was conducted to compare the characteristics of fish distribution according to sand type stream and cobble type stream the 4 stream selected every season. The collected Korea endemic species during the survey period were 24, including Acheilognathus gracilis. Dominant species of Hongcheon stream and Muju Namdae stream was Zacco koreanus, each accounting for 39.9% and 28.4% in order, and dominant species in Yanghwa stream was Rhodeus notatus, 13.6%, and those in Gap stream was Z. platypus, by 26.0%. As a result of community analysis, dominant index was 0.27~0.63, diversity index was 1.92~2.67, evenness index was 0.6~0.79, richness index was 3.09~3.53, and dominant index was the highest in Hongcheon stream, and the indices of diversity, evenness and richness were the highest in Yanghwa stream. As a result of tolerance guild analysis, Hongcheon stream and Muju Namdae stream with a variety of substrates accounted for relatively higher rate by 50.1% and 46.4% in sensitive species respectively, and Yanghwa stream and Gap stream with greater sand substrates had 0.5% and 5.3% scarce rate of sensitive species. As a result of similarity analysis using the species, population and substrate structures of the fisheries appeared in each stream, cobble type streams such as Hongcheon stream and Muju Namdae stream were the most similar by 50.4% in species and population, 95.2% in bed structure. As a result of IBI analysis, Hongcheon stream and Muju Namdae stream appeared as 'Class A,' Yanhwa stream and Gap stream as 'Class B' and the two groups of cobble type stream and sand type stream were divided as a result of principal components analysis.

A Spatial Data Stream Processing System for Spatial Context Analysis in Real-time (실시간 공간 상황 분석을 위한 공간 데이터 스트림 처리 시스템)

  • Spatial data streams from sensors are useful in context-awareness for many types of applications. However, an important gap is found between spatial data stream management in real-time and complex computation for spatial context-awareness, and this brings about serious difficulty to integrate spatial data stream processing and context-awareness. In this paper, we present a system called SCONSTREAM(Spatial CONtext STREAm Management) that we have developed to resolve the gap between spatial data stream and context-awareness. The key approach of our system is to filter off unnecessary spatial data streams and convert them to the spatial context streams, which are smaller and more suitable to be processed by the context-awareness module than raw data from sensors. By experimentation, We show that SCONSTREAM resolves the functional gap between spatial stream processing and spatial context-awareness module.

Evaluation of SWAT2000 Model Application for Estimating Delivered Nutrients Load for the Gap Stream Watershed (갑천유역의 영양염류 유달부하량 산정을 위한 SWAT2000 모형의 적용성 평가)

  • In order to estimate delivered nutrients load from non-point sources in the Gap stream watershed in Daejeon, a distributed watershed model SWAT2000 was used so that it could predict the impact of land management practices on water, sediments and chemicals yields in large complex watersheds with varing soils, land uses and management condition over long period of time. The SWAT2000 was applied to the Daejeon (Indong), Yudeung (Boksu) and Gap (Hoeduck) streams for TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) of nutrients. The observed water quality and streamflow data of the year of 2002 and 2003 were used for calibration, and those of the year 2004 and 2005 were used for validation. Simulated results were evaluated by Estimation Efficiency Analysis (COE), Regression Analysis $(R^2)$ and Relative Error (R.E.) for the nutrients amounts on the monthly and yearly basis by comparing observed load with estimated load obtained by using SWAT2000 simulations. The COE value fur T-N was ranged from 0.59 to 0.78, $R^2$ values for T-N ranged from 0.65 to 0.84, and R.E values fur T-N load ranged from 4% to 20%. COE value far T-N was ranged from 0.59 to 0.73, $R^2$ values for T-P ranged from 0.67 to 0.82, and R.E values for T-P load ranged from 3% to 25%. Estimated results of SWAT2000 simulation for 3 sites (Indong, Boksu, Hoedeok) were reasonably satisfactory. This study indicated that SWAT2000 model could be applicable to estimate the nutrients load from the Gap stream watershed in Korea.

A Study on the Bird Communities and Similarity of Three Streams in Daejeon Metropolitan City (대전 3대 하천의 조류군집과 유사성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted from April, 2002 to March 2006, using three urban streams(Gap Stream, Yudeung Stream and Daejeon Stream) in Daejeon Metropolitan City. 12,027 individual birds summed by the peak count in 126 species, 34 families, and 13 orders were observed from three stream sites. Dominant species were of Anas poecilorhyncha, Anas crecca, Columba livia, Passer montanus, and Egretta garzetta(in that order). The groups of birds were classified into six types. The most frequent group were the arbor birds(54 species), while the smallest group was the diving ducks(7 species). As for the number of individuals, the shrub bird group had 721 individuals while the dabbling ducks observed had 4,974 individuals. Regarding the distribution of birds appeareing in each stream, 14,885 individual numbers in 114 species were observed at Gap Stream, 6,642 individuals in 90 species at Yudeung Stream and 4,202 individuals in 69 species at Daejeon Stream. Various indices of the birds were analyzed with respects to the similarities between streams. Gap Stream had similar characteristics to Yudeung Stream, and the latter was similar to Daejeon Stream. However, Gap Stream and Daejeon Stream showed different characteristics. The dominance index of each section was calculated using ten dominant bird species top-down. Subsequently, the birds and their preferred environment were analyzed. The results showed that shrub birds and arbor birds preferred the upper stream of every stream, while herons and dabbling ducks inhabited the midstream. Dabbling ducks and some diving ducks appeared downstream.

Influence of River Discharge Fluctuation and Tributary Mixing on Water Quality of Geum River, Korea (유량변화와 지류유입에 따른 금강의 수질 변화)

  • To study the influence of changes in river discharge on water quality of the main stem of the Geum River, we investigated variation of inflow load from tributaries with river discharge. We also studied the mixing behavior of pollutants during mixing of waters of the main stem and Gap Stream. For this study, we collected water quality data such as suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) representing pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon events of 2013 from a website of Water Information System. Based on inflow load, the Gap and Miho streams may be ones of tributaries which may largely influence water quality of main stem in upper river region. The Suksung and Nonsan Streams seemed to further affect water quality downstream. Results of modified EMMA indicated SS and TP may have another source(besides Gap Stream) at pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon period. In contrast, TN and organic matter (BOD, COD, TOC) were conservative at pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. However, when river discharge increased, these pollutants may also came from unspecified non-point sources. Therefore, we need to attempt to find non-point sources for the pollutants in the main channel of upper Geum River region.
