Application of Long Gauge Fiber Optic Sensors to Construction Engineering Structures (장대 광변형 센서의 건설 구조물 적용)

  • Various kind of fiber optic gauge sensors are available that can be bonded to civil engineering structures such as bridges, dams, tunnels and pipelines. A new fiber optic long gauge has significant advantages over other fiber optic sensors. These gauges can vary in length from less than 10 cm up to 30 m and provide the structural engineer with accurate measurements of displacement. These displacements can be converted to strains by dividing the measurement by the long gauge length. Using new optical technology, the long gauge instrument developed by FOX-TEK can choose max. 30 meters of gauge length so as to measure the very early stress/strain correlation curve. And this gauge length to be extended up to 100 meter in 2002.

  • Gauge blocks are the most widely used material measure in length field in industry. The gauge block interferometer, which is the gauge block measuring system, comprises Twyman-Green type interferometer optics and light sources having precisely known wavelengths. This paper describes the work done for advancing the measurement system and automating the measurement process. The advancing of the system was done mainly by exchanging the spectral lamp with the frequency stabilized lasers, and the automation of measurement was achieved by modifying the hardware and developing the automatic measuring software. As the results of this work, the contrast of interferometric fringes of gauge blocks longer than 100 mm s enhanced about 20 times, and the measurement time has reduced down to 50% by automation.

  • In order to reduce the length of off-gauge at FGC(Flying gauge change) point, We adopted dynamic set up in No. 4 cold rolling mill. The conventional set-up of FGC(Flying gauge change) was calculated on the basis of preset values in the process control computer, so the difference between actual strip thickness and preset thickness cause long off-gauge. The dynamic SET-UP control was calculated on the basis of actual strip thickness of FGC(Flying gauge change) point from X-ray gauge of mill entry and No.i stand. We applied dynamic SET-UP control in September last year. Compare to the previous result, the length of off-gauge is reduced by about 36%.

A Study on the Analysis and Minimization of Structural Error in Weft Knitting - Using Cotton Yarn - (위편성물의 설계 오차값 분석에 관한 연구 - 면사를 사용하여 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and minimize structural error between sample knitting and actual knitting in weft knitting apparel. Basic stitches used in this study were plain stitch, $0{\times}0$ rib stitch, $1{\times}1$ rib stitch, $2{\times}2$ rib stitch, Milan rib stitch. They were knitted into two different gauges(7 and 12 gauge) and 6 different sample sizes by computer program. The weight, length and width of these 5 basic knitting stitches were measured and their changes according to gauge, stitch and knitting were calculated and analyzed. The results were as follows; The weight of $0{\times}0$ rib stitch was the largest, followed by Milan rib stitch, $2{\times}2$ rib stitch, plain stitch and $1{\times}1$ rib stitch. As the density of stitch per unit area increases, the weight increases. The length of $0{\times}0$ rib stitch was the largest, followed by plain stitch, $2{\times}2$ rib stitch, $1{\times}1$ rib stitch and Milan stitch in both 7 and 12 gauge. As the number of course increases, the length increases accordingly. However, its increase ratio shows higher than that of number of course. It means that the reduction in number of course is needed to get aimed length. The width of Milan rib stitch was the largest, followed by $0{\times}0$ rib stitch, plain stitch, $2{\times}2$ rib stitch, $1{\times}1$ rib stitch in 7 gauge. In 12 gauge, Milan stitch, plain stitch and $0{\times}0$ rib stitch were the highest, followed by $2{\times}2$ rib stitch and $1{\times}1$ rib stitch. It showed that the change in shape of stitch influenced on the width more than the length of stitch.

  • In the rolling of steel or non-steel metal the most important quality aspect are thickness and flatness. In thickness, there are two important factors. One of them is getting close with accurate goal, nominal gauge, the other is minimize gauge bandwidth, the variation in gauge. In this thesis, we proposed the fuzzy model AGC to minimize gauge variation along the length, developed the rolling mill dynamic model using the math mode of the rolling mill process and the rolling model related with the variety character of the rolling material. We compared the gauge control efficiency of fuzzy model AGC and PI mass flow AGC. We have got a simulation result, that the exit gauge variation of PI mass flow AGC was 2 micron and fuzzy model AGC was 1.2 micron at 1200mpm of rolling speed when each controller was rolling 5 micron of material that is the entry gauge variation.

  • A roughness measuring system which comprises an integrating sphere and a stabilized laser has been fabricated with the aim of measuring the roughness correction value which is necessary in gauge block measurement by optical interferometry. To calibrate the system, a Newton's ring interferometer has been introduced. The method how to calibrate the roughness measurement system has been described.

  • This experiment was done to find out how the length and the diameter of the sprue effects the porosity created during the moduling process, which is caused by the metal's shrinking and stretching action. the experiment was done in two groups(A and B), using experimental gold, and made 10 copings for both groups. 1. In group A, The length of the sprues were given the same, but the diameter of the sprue were 6, 8, 10, 12, 18 gauge. As a result, the porosity came out big with 12 and 18 gauge and for 10, 8, 6 gauge, the porosity was hardly seen or none was noticeable. 2. In group B, the diameter was given the sam for the sprues, but the length of the sprues were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25mm. As a result, the porosity came out big with 25, 20, 15mm the porosity was hardly seen or none was noticeable. 3. The diameter needs to be big and the length, short. 4. The appropriate sized sprue must be chosen for each individual tooth, according to it's shape and size.

  • This paper presents the Inkjet-printed strain gauge using PEDOT:PSS. The strain gauge (width 0.6 mm, length 20 mm, thickness $0.3{\mu}m$) was printed on the PET film using PEDOT:PSS ink. The resistance variation of the fabricated strain gauge was measured by the digital multi-meter with the displacement range of -4 to 10 mm. As the measured result, resistance variation (${\Delta}R/R_0$) has approximately 0.75%, linearity of 99.87%. The fabricated strain gauge is expected to the various applications such as tape type pressure sensor, PMS(pressure mapping sensor), wearable devices.

  • A number of acceleration-based damage detection methods have been developed but they have not been widely applied in engineering practices because the acceleration response is insensitive to minor damage of civil structures. In this article, a damage detection approach using the long-gauge strain sensing technology and the principle component analysis technology is proposed. The Long gauge FBG sensor has its special merit for damage detection by measuring the averaged strain over a long-gauge length, and it can be connected each other to make a distributed sensor network for monitoring the large-scale civil infrastructure. A new damage index is defined by performing the principle component analyses of the long-gauge strains measured from the intact and damaged structures respectively. Advantages of the long gauge sensing and the principle component analysis technologies guarantee the effectiveness for structural damage localization. Examples of a simple supported beam and a steel stringer bridge have been investigated to illustrate the successful applications of the proposed method for structural damage detection.

  • It is need to inspect a injected E.V.A midsole automatically in shoe manufacture. We applied image processing technology to inspect a injected E.V.A midsole. Captured image by CCD camera was processed with smoothing and edge detection. We compensated error of length from processed image of gauge block and error by bending strain with the measurement method of interval length for midsole image.
