  • Machining accuracy is affected by quasi-static errors of machining center. Since machine errors have a direct influence upon both the surface finish and geometric shape of the finished workpiece, it is very important to measure the machine errors and to compensate these errors. The laser measurement method for identifying geometric errors of machine tool has the disadvantages such as high cost, long calibration time and usage of volumetric error synthesis model. Accordingly, this paper deals with analysis of the geometric errors of a machine tool using ball bar test without using complicated error synthesis model. Statistical analysis method was adopted in this paper for deriving geometric errors using hemispherical helix ball bar test. As a result of experiment, geometric errors of the vertical machining center are compensated by 88%.

  • In this study, a measurement method of double ball-bar is proposed to measure the geometric errors of an ultra-precision roll mold machine tool. A volumetric error model of the machine tool is established to investigate the effects of the geometric errors to a radius error and a cylindricity of the roll mold. A measurement path is suggested for the geometric errors, and a ball-bar equation is derived to represent the relation between the geometric errors and a measured data of the double ball-bar. Set-up errors, which are inevitable at the double ball-bar installation, also are analyzed and are removed mathematically for the measurement accuracy. In addition, standard uncertainty of the measured geometric errors is analyzed to determine the experimental condition. Finally, the proposed method is tested and verified through simulation.

  • This paper discisses the effects geometric errors on the measurement of error motions of rotor with the cylindrical capacitive displacement sensor. Analytic model of the measuring process with this sensor is derived and this model shows that the effect of geometric errors of sensor is larger than that of rator on the measurement of error motions of rotor. The computer simulation shows effect of periodic errors in this sensor on the measuring orbit.

  • By analysing the examination papers for geometry, we classified the errors occured in the proofs for geometric problems into 5 main types - logical invalidity, lack of inferential ability or knowledge, ambiguity on communication, incorrect description, and misunderstanding the question - and each types were classified into 2 or 5 subtypes. Based on the types of errors, answers of each problem was analysed in detail. The errors were classified, causes were described, and teaching plans to prevent the error were suggested case by case. To improve the students' ability to express the proof of geometric problems, followings are needed on school education. First, proof learning should be customized for each types of errors in school mathematics. Second, logical thinking process must be emphasized in the class of mathematics. Third, to prevent and correct the errors found in the proofs for geometric problems, further research on the types of such errors are needed.

  • Thermal deformation causes large amount of machine tool errors. In order to compensate for thermal and geometric errors of the machine tool an off-line geometric adaptive control (GAC) scheme was developed. THe GAC method was realized by using a measuring plate made of precision spheres. Error vectors and volumetric errors were measured by the measuring plate. Error compensation models were obtained from error vectors and a kinematic chain of machine tools. Reliability of the GAC system of thermal and geometric errors were confrimed by large amount of experiments.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a measurement error model for sculptured surface in On-Machine Measurement(OMM) process based on a closed-loop configuration. The geometric error model of each axis of a vertical CNC machining center is derived using a 4$\times$4 homogeneous transformation matrix. The ideal locations of a touch-type probe for the sculptured surface measurement are calculated from the parametric surface representation and X-, Y- directional geometric errors of the machine. Also the actual coordinates of the probe are calculated by considering the pre-travel variation of a probe and Z-directional geometric errors. Then, the step-by-sep measurement error analysis method is suggested based on a closed-loop configuration of the machining center including workpiece and probe errors. The simulation study shows the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed error modeling strategy.

  • In this paper, double ball-bar is used to estimate the geometric errors of a rotary table, which includes one-axial motion, two-radial motions and two-tilt motions, except the angular positioning error. To simplify the measurement procedures, three measurement steps have been designed and developed. At each measurement step, one end of the double ball-bar is fixed at the nose of spindle and the other end is located on the rotary table. And specific circular test path is planned to keep the distance between two balls as constant at ideal case. The relationship including the geometric errors of a rotary table and the measured distance between two balls which is distorted by the geometric errors is defined by using ball-bar equation. Each geometric error is modeled as $4^{th}$ order polynomial considering $C^1$-continuity. Finally the coefficients of polynomial are calculated by least-square method. Simulation is done to check the validation of the suggested method considering set-up errors and measurement noise. Suggested method is applied to estimate geometric errors of a rotary table of a 5-axis machine tool.

  • The verification of the STL file is essential to build the confident parts using a RP machine, because the STL file obtained from the CAD software has many errors-the orientation of triangle does not coincide with adjacent triangles or some triangles are omitted, overlpped and so forth. Especially, the STL file translated from the surface model has more errors than those translated from the solid model. In this study, all possible errors were classified with the most general from and the causes of errors were analyzed to verify and correct errors. Using the triangle based non-manifold geometric modeling, these errors were corrected. Especially, this study took the notice of the problem about the intersected triangles and non-manifold properties overlooked in the previous studies. But this study has a penalty on computing time of $O(n^2)$.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. In this study, the compensation device and temperature-based algorithm have been implemented on the machining center in order to compensate thermal error of machine tools under the real-time. The thermal errors are predicted using the neural network and multi-regression modeling methods. In order to compensate thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with five gap sensors and manufactured compensation device on the horizontal machining center.
