Study on the effect of reducing consumption of domestic electric power by managing model energy mileage system in Busan (부산시 에너지마일리지제 시범운영을 통한 가정용 전력 소비절감 효과분석)

  • To promote citizen's involvement in the GHG(Green House Gas) reduction policy, Busan city administration adopted an pilot energy incentive system called 'energy mileage'. The energy mileage system was designed to make energy end-users motivated to reduce domestic electricity use by providing financial rewards. Through the course of the pilot period, 5,3330 householders volunteerly participated the pilot system. About 66% of the participants managed to make energy saving against the same period of the previous year while 38.8% achieved the targeted reduction rate(i.e. over 10%) and received the equivalent rewards.

Driving Projects of Urban Agriculture for the Energy Independence (에너지 자립을 위한 도시농업 활성화 추진정책 방안)

  • This study compared and analyzed existing studies and released papers to identify the "definition and scope of urban agriculture" which correspond to the circumstances of Korea based on the fact that urban agriculture was selected as one of the measures to pursue green growth by the Presidential Committee on Green Growth (PCGG) and the discussions and deliberations among PCGG, government, academia, civic organizations, and experts. It also aims to present the ways of policy to facilitate the development of urban agriculture based on the mentioned identification. This research proposes the definition of urban agriculture as 'all agricultural activities that incorporates multi-functional public benefits of agriculture performed within the administrative district of a city. However, the scope of urban agriculture should exclude the agricultural sites, the methods, and the activities that are against the multi-functional public benefits of agriculture, which will be determined depending on the spaces, methods, and purposes of planting food crops. In order to facilitate the development of urban agriculture, the government should implement the policy measures as following: (1) to analyze spaces for farming, and provide the spaces to the citizens; (2) to prepare legislation and institution that will allow citizens to use the farming spaces continuously; (3) to develop Korean-style urban agriculture model that fully reflects the features of Korean cities; (4) to develop a system where the urban citizens can easily learn and experience the urban agriculture; and, (5) to provide incentives that will attract active participation of urban citizens such as carbon mileage. (6) to analyze effect of urban agriculture to save energy and food self-sufficiency.

Measuring the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Management System Using Bluetooth Sensor Node (블루투스 센서노드를 이용한 온실가스 배출 저감 측정 및 관리시스템)

  • Carbon dioxide is a major cause for which accelerates Global Warming. Therefore several countries are working on the project recommended to use a bicycle instead of the car when you move to the nearby destination in an effort to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide. In this paper, It was developed to measure the greenhouse gas reduction using Bluetooth Sensor Node by riding a bicycle instead of a car and management system in order to authenticate the riding record. The developed application provides various information such as individual bicycle mileage, greenhouse gas reductions, bicycle riding path, the number of planted ginkgo trees. This proposed system is expected to be helpful to green house gas emission reduction because the usage rate of bicycle will increase if government combine ways to offer people rewards such as pin money or tax breaks for people who take advantage of the bicycle with the project.

  • This study is focused on mediating effect of academic motivation between the educational environmental factors on Self-determination Theory and Reward and Punishment Mark System. For the purpose of this study, a questionnaire survey uses a scale being developed through the educational environmental factors on self-determination, academic motivation, and academic achievement. The survey was conducted among 202 students in middle and high school in Seoul. First, autonomy of variables of educational environment based on self-determination theory has influenced on internal and external academic motivation, confidence makes internal and reasonable motivation high, and relationship makes demotivation low. Second, Reward and Punishment Mark System which has recently been replaced traditional punishment doesn't have influenced on academic motivation of students. Third, internal motivation has positively influenced on willingness to take classes and academic achievement analyzing the effect of academic motivation sub-factors on academic achievement. Therefore, this study suggests that autonomy, confidence, and relationship in self-determination theory make academic motivation and willingness to take classes high.

Comparative Analysis on the Rail and Road Freight Transportation: Air contaminant and greenhouse gas emission (철도화물과 도로화물수송의 비교분석 연구: 대기오염물질 및 온실가스 배출)

  • With increasing global concerns for environmental impacts, efforts have been made to encourage a modal shift from road freight to an eco-friendly transport system such as rail freight. In Korea, the government has set master plans for a green transport system but has not taken any substantial action to promote rail freight transport. In developing policies and actions to promote rail freight, quantitative studies on environmental impacts among transportation means are essential. This study examined the air pollutant emissions and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit freight transported by road and rail, respectively. To improve the accuracy, we analyzed emission data and freight transport mileage of rail freight considering diesel locomotives and electric locomotives separately. The results show that unit air pollutant emissions (except SO2) from road freight are about 7~15 times more than those from rail freight. In addition, the GHG emission unit of road freight is about 4 times higher than that of rail freight.

Estimation of Food Miles and CO2 Emissions of Imported Food (수입 음식료품의 푸드 마일리지 및 이산화탄소 배출량 산정)

  • Increase in greenhouse gas emissions during the last century has led to remarkable changes in our environment and climate system. Many policy measures have been developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the world, many of which require our lifestyle changes from energy-intensive to energy-saving. One of the changes in our living patterns is to consider food miles. A food mile is the distance food travels from where it is produced to where it is consumed. Providing information of food miles will help people choose low mileage food, helping promote a "green consumption" action and lead to a low carbon society with emission reduction systems. In this study, 10 items are selected from 23 Harmonized commodity description and 2-digit coding system (HS) to estimate their food miles, and $CO_2$ emissions released in the transportation of imported food. For the estimation, four countries are chosen-Korea, Japan, United Kingdom (UK) and France, with Korea and Japan's 2001, 2003, and 2007 trade statistics and UK and France's 2003 and 2007 trade statistics used. As a result, Korea showed in 2007 the highest level of food miles and $CO_2$ emissions per capita among 4 countries. That suggests that Korea should make an effort to purchase local food to reduce food miles and use low-carbon vehicles for food transport, contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
