  • This paper presents a systematic approach of measurement, modeling and analysis of grounding system impedance in the field of lightning protection system and intelligent power equipments. The measurement and analysis system of ground impedance is based on a computer aided technique. The magnitude and phase of ground impedance were determined by the novel measurement and analysis using the revised fall-of-potential method. The ground impedances of the ground rod of 50 m long are considerably dependent on the frequency. The ground impedance is mainly resistive in the frequency range of 3-20 kHz. At higher frequencies, the reactive components of the ground impedances are no longer negligible and the inductance of the ground rod was found to be the core factor deciding the ground impedance. Although the steady-state ground resistance of the ground rod of 50 m was less than that of the ground rod of 10 m, the ground impedances of the ground rod of 50 m over the frequency range of more than 60 kHz were much greater than those of the ground rod of 10 m. Furthermore, the equivalent circuit model based on the measured data was proposed. and the calculated results were in approximately agreement with the measured data.

  • This paper deals with the fundamental characteristics of transient and conventional ground impedances associated with soil discharges when the lightning impulse voltage was applied to a small-sized ground rod. The potential rise responses of the test ground rod to impulse currents were observed. The current-voltage (I-V)curves, transient and conventional ground impedance curves were examined.. To analyze the transient behaviors of ground rod attendant upon soil discharges, the impulse responses of ground rod were compared with those of non-inductive resistor. As a consequence, the potential rise and impedance of ground rod were reduced and the currents dispersed into the earth were increased due to soil discharges near the ground rod. Soil discharges are classified into two regimes; ionization and breakdown phenomena. The potential rise and impulse impedance of ground rod are significantly decreased by breakdown processes in soil.

  • This paper presents the distributions of ground surface potential rises as functions of soil structure and buried depth of ground rod. To propose fundamental data relevant to the reduction of electric shock of human beings due to ground surface rise, the ground surface potential rises near the ground rod were computed and measured. Ground surface potential rises near ground rod strongly depend on the soil structure, and an increase of the buried depth of ground rod results in a decrease of the ground surface potentials. The maximum ground surface potential appeared at the just above point of ground rod. Also, the measured results were in reasonably agreement with the data computered by grounding analysis program.

  • Deeply-driven ground rod in the rainy season may contact with rainwater and ground water. When surge voltages are applied to the submerged ground rods, the ionization around the ground rods are occurred. Ionization in soil and/or water is affected in dynamic performance of ground rod systems. This work aims at studying the transient performance of ground rod system under impulse voltage using scale model in an electrolytic tank. The potential reduction and energy dispersion caused by ionization were treasured and quantitatively analyzed using the Matlab Program. As a result, the peak voltage at the terminal of ground rod was varied with water resistivity and charging voltage of Marx generator. The potential at the terminal of the ground rod was approximately reduced to a half of the applied voltage just below breakdown voltage. Also the energy more than half of the applied energy was dispersed through the ground rod due to ionization just below breakdown voltage.

  • When the ground current is injected into the adjacent ground electrode, the potential interference is caused between ground electrodes, the ground potential interferences have been largely studied with power frequency fault currents. Many attempts to find the frequency-dependent grounding impedance report that the high frequency grounding impedance is very different with the ground resistance. This paper presents experimental data on the frequency-dependent potential interference effects in the vicinity of ground rod. The ground potential rises around the test ground rod of 4 or 6[m] were measured and discussed. As a result, the ground potential rises and potential interference factor are decreased with decreasing the grounding impedance. It was found that the lowering of grounding impedance is critical to reduce the ground potential interference effects.

  • This paper presents electric potential rise on the surface of the earth due to ground currents. It is the aim of this paper to propose fundamental data relevant to the earth surface potentials depending on the soil structures. The earth potential rise, touch and step voltages in the immediate vicinity of the ground rod of a distribution pole were measured and analyzed. The results described in this paper are based on laboratory measurements which were intended to simulate conditions existing in actual installations. As a result, the earth surface potential rise, touch and step voltages strongly depend on the soil structure. The highest earth surface potential occurred in the vicinity of the top of ground rod. When the ground rod was installed in the distance range of $1{\sim}1.5\;m$ from distribution pole, the highest touch voltages appeared near the place of 1 m on the straight line connecting the distribution pole to ground rod.

  • Soil discharges near the ground rod play an important role to reduce the ground potential rise and the ground impedance and to help the fault current to spread into the earth. This paper presents the effects of soil discharges on the transient and conventional ground impedances when the lightning impulse voltage was applied to a ground rod with radial needles. The current-voltage (I-V)curves and transient ground impedance curves were calculated based on the measured current and potential traces. Soil discharge behaviors related to I-V curves and transient ground impedance curves were analyzed as a function of the magnitude of lightning impulse voltages. As a result, the soil discharges occurred near the ground electrode contribute to the reduction of conventional ground impedance and limits the ground potential rise effectively under lightning impulse voltages.

  • This paper presents the behaviors of transient and effective impulse impedances of a long ground rod associated with the current injection points. The laboratory test for the time domain performance of actual-sized model ground rod subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out The transient ground impedances of long ground rods under impulse currents were higher than the ground resistance. Both of the ground resistance and the effective impulse ground impedance decrease with increasing the length of the ground rods. Also, the effective impulse ground impedances are significantly increased in fast rise time ranges. The reduction of the ground resistance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems. When the test current is injected at the bottom of ground rod, the oscillating pulses with high frequency are included on the wave front of ground rod potential and the effective impulse impedances are higher than any other cases.

  • This paper describes the touch voltages and potential distributions according to the distance between distribution concrete pole and ground rod when the current is injected to a ground rod through overhead ground wire. Touch voltage is measured in four directions. The touch voltage and ground potential distribution per 1 A are analyzed. The touch voltage was the highest at the around surface just above the ground rod.
