  • The properties of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes are progressing, as HTS tapes evolve from 1st generation to 2nd generation. This paper presents design and construction of a 2nd generation HTS magnet consisting of two nested GdBCO and YBCO pancake coils. Two HTS tapes of different widths were used to wind the HTS nested magnet. Considering that a higher magnetic field is applied to the inner magnet than to the outer magnet, 12 mm GdBCO tape was used for winding the inner magnet, which consisted of four single pancake windings. Eight double pancake windings wound with 4.4 mm YBCO tapes were used for the outer magnet. The test results show that the central magnetic field of the HTS nested magnet was 920 mT. The measured critical currents of the inner and outer magnet at 77K were 80.8 A and 32.6 A, respectively.

  • When the aspect ratio of a magnet varies, the magnetic field in the magnet also varies. The critical current of a tape-shaped HTS wire varies with the direction and magnitude of applied magnetic field. Consequently when the aspect ration of a HTS magnet varies, the critical current of a HTS magnet varies. This paper shows the relation between the aspect ratio of a magnet and the energy and inductance of a HTS magnet. The critical current is also shown at various aspect ratio of the magnet. The length of the HTS wire, inner diameter of the magnet, and number of pancake are chosen to be variables which varies the shape of the magnet. For a HTS magnet consisting of pancake windings, calculation results show the number of pancake windings are the prime factor which varied the energy and inductance of the magnet. The inner diameter of the magnet varies the energy and inductance of the magnet a little.

  • In recent years, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Quadruple Triplets are being developed for heavy ion accelerators, because the HTS magnets are suitable to withstand radiation and high heat loads in the hot cell of accelerators. Generally, an iron yoke, which costs a mass of material, was employed to enhance the magnetic field when a quadrupole magnet was designed. The type of the magnet is called iron-dominated magnet, because the total magnetic field was mainly induced by the iron. However, in the HTS superconductor iron-dominated magnets, the coil-induced field also can have a certain proportion. Therefore, the air-core HTS quadrupole magnets can be considered instead of the iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet to be employed to save the iron material. This study presents the design of an air-core HTS quadruple triplet which consists three by air-core HTS quadruple magnet and compare the design result with that of an iron-core HTS quadruple triplet. First, the characteristics of an air-core HTS quadrupole magnet were analyzed to select the magnet system for the magnetic field uniformity impairment. Then, the field uniformity was improved(< 0.1%) exactly using evolution strategy (ES) method for each iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet and the air-core HTS quadruple triplet was established. Finally, the designed air-core triplet was compared with the iron-core HTS quadruple triplet, and the results of beam trajectories were presented with both the HTS quadruple triplet systems to show that the air-core triplet can be employed instead of the iron-core HTS triplet. The design of the air-core quadruple triplet was suggested for a heavy ion accelerator.

  • NMR over 1 GHz (23.5 T) level has difficulties in design and fabrication with only low temperature superconducting (LTS) wire because of its material characteristics such as the decay of critical current under the magnetic field. Because High temperature superconducting (HTS) tape has a good performance under the extremely high magnetic field, it has been developed for high-field magnet over 23.5 T. In this paper, the LTS magnet was made for applying magnetic fields externally and the HTS coil was designed and fabricated. The electromagnetic field analysis has been done with respect to the structure and the operating current of the LTS and HTS coil. Considering to the field homogeneity and the center field, the design parameters which is suitable for the HTS coil were found. The HTS insert coil was impregnated with epoxy resin in order to prevent the movement of winding during energizing the magnet. The hybrid magnet (LTS/HTS) magnet was fabricated and tested based on the design parameters. The experimental result shows that the LTS background magnet and the HTS insert coil can be operated stable beyond 220 A and 210 A. The final value 4.32 T at the center was acquired.

  • Recently, production technique and property of the High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) tape have been improved. Thus, the study on applying an HTS magnet to the high magnetic field application is rapidly increased. A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer requires high magnitude and homogeneous of central magnetic field. However, the HTS magnet has fabrication errors because shape of HTS is tape and HTS magnet is manufactured by winding HTS tape to the bobbin. The fabrication errors are winding error, bobbin diameter error, spacer thickness error and so on. The winding error occurs when HTS tape is departed from the arranged position on the bobbin. The bobbin diameter and spacer thickness error occur since the diameter of bobbin and spacer are inaccurate. These errors lead magnitude and homogeneity of central magnetic field to be different from its ideal design. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of winding error, bobbin diameter error and spacer thickness error on the central field and field homogeneity of HTS magnet using the virtual NMR signals in MATLAB simulation.

  • An air gap between the pancake windings was provided in this paper to increase the central magnetic field of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet consisting of pancake windings. Unlike the LTS magnet, providing an air gap between the pancake windings increases the central magnetic field of a HTS magnet. Furthermore, the uniformity of the magnetic field near the center of the magnet increased because the pancake windings spread out in wider area. Effects of the air gap on the central magnetic field of an HTS magnet was described in this paper, Calculation of the critical current was carried out by using E-J relation of the HTS wire and the optimization technique was adopted to obtain the appropriate critical current which could maximize the central magnetic field. Pancake windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS wire were wound on glass epoxy bobbin. 6 double pancake windings with 200 turns were used to construct a HTS magnet. Characteristics of the HTS magnet including the central magnetic field and the uniformity of the magnetic field were measured and compared with the results of calculation.

  • AMR (Active Magnetic Regenerative) refrigerators require the large variation of the magnetic field and a HTS magnet can be used. The amount of AC loss is very important considering the overall efficiency of the AMR refrigerator. However, it is very hard to estimate the precise loss of the HTS magnet because the magnetic field distribution around the conductor itself depends on the coil configuration and the neighboring HTS wires interact each other through the distorted magnetic field by the screening current Therefore, the AC loss of HTS magnet should be calculated using the whole configuration of the HTS magnet with superconducting characteristic. This paper describes the AC loss of the HTS magnet by an appropriate FEM approach, which uses the non-linear characteristic of HTS conductor. The analysis model is based on the 2-D FEM model, called as 'magnetic field formulation and edge-element model', for whole coil configuration in cylindrical coordinates. The effects of transport current and stacked conductors on the AC loss are investigated considering the field-dependent critical current. The PDE model of 'Comsol multiphysics' is used for the FEM analysis with properly implemented equations for axisymmetric model.

  • In recent years, the iron-dominated high-temperature superconductor (HTS) quadrupole magnets are being developed for heavy ion accelerators. Field analyses for iron-dominated quadrupole magnets were based on the normal-conducting (NC) quadrupole magnet early in the development for accelerators. Some conclusions are still in use today. However, the magnetic field of iron-dominated HTS quadrupole magnets cannot fully follow these conclusions. This study established an HTS quadrupole magnet model and an NC quadrupole magnet model, respectively. The harmonic characteristics of two magnets were analyzed and compared. According to the comparison, the conventional iron-dominated quadrupole magnets can be designed for maximum field gradient; the HTS quadrupole magnet, however, should be considered with varying field gradient. Finally, the HTS quadrupole magnet was designed for the changing field gradient. The field quality of the design was improved comparing with the result of the previous study. The new design for the HTS quadrupole magnet has been suggested.

  • HTS wires processed by PIT method are now available for magnet applications. But, those wires can not be used over 40 K due to weak link. This leads to necessity of development of coated conductor which can retain high $J_c$ at high field in liquid nitrogen. In this paper, various technical issues and the R&D status for both PIT wires and coated conductor were discussed. The difference of coated conductor's processes were also investigated and summarized. Various requirements for a design of HTS magnets were discussed. Anisostropic $J_c$ property with respect to magnetic field was considered to determine the coil's critical current. Low n value is a critical parameter to degrade a field stability with respect to time for a persistent mode HTS magnet. The relation between the margin of operation current and n value was investigated. Prototype HTS magnets with PIT wires are being developed for various applications such as crystal growth, MRI, magnetic separator and etc. HTS magnets will come into wide use in various fields of industries if the HTS wires with a low performance cost is developed.

  • The cental magnetic field of an HTS magnet consisting of pancake windings can be increased if the magnet is excited by multiple power sources. Multiple power sources enable all pancake windings to conduct their critical currents. The HTS magnet consisting of pancake windings was excited by separate power sources in this paper. Critical currents of each pancake winding were determined by using optimization technique. Fabrication of the BSCCO magnet consisting of 10 pancake windings is described and test results of the BSCCO magnet are given. Central magnetic field and perpendicular magnetic field of the magnet excited by multiple power sources were compared with those of the magnet excited by a single power source.
