  • The effects of the number of Hangul syllable, the nunber/location of batchim in a Hangul word, and compound/noncompound Hangul word on memory span were examined. The results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the lower us memory span was, (2) the more batchims a two-syllable word had, the lower its memory span was (Korean batchim effect on memory span), (3) noncompound word had higher memory span than compound word. The reading speed of above mentioned words was measured and the results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the slower its reading speed was, (2) but the reading speed of a two-syllable word was forest when it had a batchim on second syllable than when it had no batchim or had a batchim on first syllable or batchims on both syllables (Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed), (3) noncompound word was read faster thu compound word. Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed was not compatible with the explanation by articulatory loop bur compatible with the explanation by visual cache where the orthographic information was represented. The results suggest that memory span was influenced nor only by phonological information but also by orthographic information.

  • A grading system of practical word processor skills is designed and implemented by using HWPML(Hangul Word Processor Markup Language) which is a product of Hangul and Computer Co Ltd. By using HWPML, which is a markup tag structure of Hangul file, Hangul files can be edited in other application programs. Authorized users can make questions. However, only the manager is allowed to register answers to the questions in order to maintain the correctness of grading. The result of test is stored in the database and the statistics on pass or failure can be shown interactively. The number of taking test and scores for each user are stored in the database and they can be accessed to whenever the user wants them. Comments on the test results are provided by the manager so that learners can intensity their weak points.

  • This paper is studied the Korean language to optimize the Hangul character coding for information processing in information terminal device and transmission in network. The paper analyzed Hangul character in Korean language and use frequency of each character. The paper also compared the analysis result to Hangul characters which are coded in standard in Korean character and Unicode. This study referred "Modern Korean Use Frequency Rate Survey Result" issued by The National Institute of the Korean Language. There are total 58,437 Korean words in the report. As a result of this paper, the Korean word 58,437ea are consisted of Hangul character total 1,540ea. The highest use frequency character is "다" and its use frequency to total use frequency rate is 15%. The lowest use character is "휫"and its use frequency to total use frequency rate is 0.00003%. The number of analyzed Hangul character 1,540 is less 7.2 times and 1.5 times than Korean and Unicode standard respectively.

  • For segmentation of constrained and handwritten Hangul, a new method, which has been not introduced, was proposed and implemented to use virtual network search system in the space between characters. The proposed system was designed to be used in all cases in unconstrained handwritten Hangul by various writers and to make a number of curved segmentation path using a virtual network to the space between characters. The proposed system prevented Process from generating a path in a wrong position by changing search window upon target block within a search process. From the experimental results, the proposed virtual network search system showed segmentation accuracy of $91.4\%$ from 800 word set including touched and overlapped characters collected from various writers.

  • The effect of the code conversion process of Korean script (Hangul), also known as words for numbers, was investigated using event-related potentials (ERPs) during mental arithmetic operations. Study subjects were asked to determine whether the arithmetic results of a given target stimuli were correctly matched. Visual inspection and statistics of mean ERPs showed stimulus type-dependent processing rather than task-dependent processing. Results of addition and multiplication tasks revealed that the overall temporal profiles of the Arabic numerals were similar to the Hangul words for numbers. The only exception to this observation was a delayed positive-slope peak occurring around 300 ms, which was likely related to the encoding process of Hangul words for numbers to Arabic-digits, defined as a 'transcoding-related potential.' Source analysis confirmed that the topography of different waveforms for the two conditions was attributed to a single dipole located in the left temporo-parietal area; this area is known to be involved in Hangul words for number processing. These results suggest that the initial processing for encoding words for numbers was followed by arithmetic operations without direct access of internal number representation. • Long time has passed since computers which used to be a means of research were commercialized and available for the general public. People used writing instruments to write before computer was commercialized. However, today a growing number of them are using computers to write instead. Computerized word processing helps write faster and reduces fatigue of hands than writing instruments, making it better fit to making long texts. However, word processing programs are more likely to cause spelling errors by the mistake of users. Spelling errors distort the shape of words, making it easy for the writer to find and correct directly, but those caused due to users' lack of knowledge or those hard to find may make it almost impossible to produce a document free of spelling errors. However, spelling errors in important documents such as theses or business proposals may lead to falling reliability. Consequently, it is necessary to conduct research on high-level spelling error correction programs for the general public. This study was designed to produce a system to correct sentence-level spelling errors to normal words with Korean alphabet similarity algorithm. On the basis of findings reported in related literatures that corrected words are significantly similar to misspelled words in form, spelling errors were extracted from a corpus. Extracted corrected words were replaced with misspelled ones to correct spelling errors with spelling error detection algorithm.

  • This paper studied the statistics such as the total number of syllables, the kinds of syllables, the frequency of syllables, the number of eojeols(word phrases unique in Korean language), the kinds of eojeols, average length of eojeols, the frequency of eojeols and the parts of speech in four different Korean textbooks for 6th-grade students(6-1 Korean Reading, 6-1 Korean Speaking Listening Writing, 6-2 Korean Reading and 6-2 Korean Speaking Listening Writing). The results of the statistical survey are as follows: the number of Hangul syllables was 194,683; the kinds of syllables were 1,290; the average frequency of syllables was 150.9; the number of eojeol was 70,185; the kinds of eojeol were 22,647; the average frequency of eojeol was 3.1; the average length of eojeols was 2.8 syllables, the longest one consist of 10 syllables. In parts of speech, nouns are used more in the Korean Reading textbook, and verbs are used more in Korean Speaking Listening Writing.
