  • Thermal cracks are among the key factors that control the quality of a brake disk. Thermal cracks may shorten the lifetime of the disc and increase brake noise. Therefore, high heat-resistant brake disk materials are needed. In this study, three kinds of disk material were tested. They are composed of C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cu, Cr, Mo, and Ni. For the three materials, tensile tests, hardness measurement, metallurgical structure analysis, image analyzer analysis, etc were carried out. And friction tests were performed by a small scale dynamometer.

  • High strength concrete used for large structures is vulnerable to fire due to explosive spalling when it is heated. Recently, various research is conducted to enhance the fire-resistance of the high strength concrete by reducing the explosive spalling at the elevated temperature. In this study, a heat transfer analysis model is proposed for a fiber-embedded fire-resistant high strength concrete. The material model of the fire-resistant high strength concrete is selected from the calibrated material model of a high strength concrete incorporating thermal properties of fibers and physical behavior of internal concrete at the elevated temperature. By comparing the simulated results using the calibrated model with the experimental results, the heat transfer model of the fiber-embedded fire-resistant high strength concrete is proposed.

  • Aluminum cast iron has excellent oxidation resistance, sulfurization resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, the ductility at room temperature is insufficient, and at temperatures above 600?, the strength drops sharply and practicality is limited. In the case of heat-resistant cast iron, high-temperature materials containing Cr and Ni account for 30 to 50% or more. However, these high-temperature materials are expensive. Aluminum heat-resistant cast iron is considered as a substitute for expensive heat-resistant materials. Oxidation due to the aging temperature and holding time conditions increases more in 0 wt.% Al-cast iron than in 2 and 4 wt.% Al-cast iron according to oxidized weight and gravimetric oxide layer thickness measurements. As a result of observing the cross-section of the oxide layer, it was found to contain 0 wt.% of Al-cast iron silicon oxide-containing SiO2 or Fe2SiO4 oxide film. In cast iron containing aluminum, the thickness of the internal oxide layer due to aluminum increases as the aging temperature and retention time increase, and the amount of the iron oxide layer generated on the surface decreases.

  • In this study, fatigue samples were prepared from cylinder head parts that are actually used in domestic (A) and foreign (B) automobiles; high-temperature, high-cycle, and low-cycle fatigue characteristics were then evaluated and compared. A study on the correlation between the microstructural factor and high temperature fatigue characteristic was attempted. The chemical compositions of the heat resistant aluminum alloys above represented A356 (A) and A319 (B), respectively. The result of the tensile strength test on material B at $250^{\circ}C$ was higher by 30.8MPa compared to material A. On the other hand, elongation was 8.5% higher for material A. At $130{\circ}C$, material B exhibited high fatigue life given high cycle fatigue under high stress, whereas material A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility is increased, material A demonstrated higher fatigue life. Through the observation of the differences in microstructure and the fatigue fracture surface, an attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of the materials was made.

  • During braking of railway vehicles the repetitive thermal shock leads to thermal cracks on disc surface, and the lifetime of brake disc is dependent on the number of trimming works for removing these thermal cracks. Many tries for development of high heat resistant brake disc to extend the disc life and to warrant reliable braking performance has been continued. In present study, we carry out the computational fatigue analysis for thermal fatigue test in three candidate materials which were made to develop new high heat resistant material. Using FEM, we simulate thermal fatigue test in three candidate materials and conventional disc material. We then estimate the number of cycle to thermal crack initiation based on data from mechanical fatigue tests, and the results are compared with each material. For each material, the correction factor for $N_{f-40}$ which is the number of cycles when crack over $40{\mu}m$ was observed in thermal fatigue test is decided. From this study, we can verify the performance of thermal fatigue test system and suggest a qualitatively comparative method for heat resistance by FEM analysis of thermal shocking phenomenon.

  • A principal advantage of a plastic tooth over a porcelain tooth should be its ability to bond to the denture base material. But plastic teeth could craze and wear easily, so more abrasion resistant plastic denture teeth have been developed. To resist abrasion, the degree of cross-linking was increased, but bonding to denture base meterial became more difficult. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of plastic teeth and abrasion resistant teeth bonded to heat-curing, self-curing and light-curing denture base material. Denture tooth molds were chosen that had a>8mm diameter. The denture teeth was bonded to three denture base materials and then machined to the same dimensions. Three denture base materials were used as control groups. Prior to tensile testing, the specimens were thermocycled between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ for 1000cycles. Tensile testing was performed on an Instron Universal testing mechine. Experimental group ; plastic teeth(Justi Imperial)+heat-curing resin(Lucitone 199) plastic teeth(Justi Imperial)+light-curing resin(Triad) plastic teeth(Justi Imperial)+self-curing resin(Vertex SC) abrasion resistant teeth(IPN)+heat-curing resin(Lucitone 199) abrasion resistant teeth(IPN)+light-curing resin(Triad) abrasion resistant teeth(IPN)+self-curing resin(Vertex SC) Control group ; heat-curing resin(Lucitone 199) light-curing resin (Triad) self-curing resin(Vertex SC). The results were as follows : 1. The denture teeth bonded to heat-curing resin showed the cohesive failure and those bonded to the other resins showed adhesive failure. 2. Tensile bond strength of the plastic teeth bonded to self-curing resin was not significantly greater than bonded to light-curing resin(p>0.05). 3. Tensile bond strength of the abrasion resistant teeth bonded to self-curing resin was not significantly greater than bonded to light-curing resin(p>0.05). 4. Tensile bond strength of the plastic teeth to self-curing resin was not significantly different from that of the abrasion-resistant teeth(p>0.05). 5. Tensile bond strength of the plastic teeth to light-curing resin was significantly greater than that of the abrasion resistant teeth(p<0.01).

  • Micro Electrochemical Machining(Micro ECM) has traditionally been used in highly specialized fields such as those of the aerospace and defense industries. It is now increasingly being applied in other industries where parts with difficult-to-cut material, complex geometry and tribology such as compute. hard disk drive(HDD) are required. Pulse Electrochemical Micro-machining provides an economical and effective method for machining high strength, high tension, heat-resistant materials into complex shapes such as turbine blades of titanium and aluminum alloys. Usually aluminum alloys are used bearings to hard disk drive in computer. In order to apply aluminum alloys to bearing used in hard disk drive, this paper presents the characteristics of Micro ECM for aluminum alloy.
