  • The helmet is an imperative personal protective equipment. This protective device must be able to guard the human head against potential risks. Helmets are classified according into the purpose of use; therefore, the required performance and specifications depend on the type of products. Military helmets are intended to protect the wearer's head from bullets and shrapnel. Generally, lightweight super fibers and fiber reinforced composite materials are used as helmet shell materials, and NIJ STD of U.S. Department of Justice is most widely used as international standard related to bulletproof helmets. Safety helmets are widely used for industrial application and sports leisure. In general, the performance of shock absorption must be ensured, and various lining systems are applied in material, design, and combination methods. Evaluation standards have also been classified and strictly controlled for each purpose; therefore, it is difficult to certify with the existing standards such as the recently developed convergence helmets. However, it is possible to launch the product through a separate national integrated certification procedure.

  • The industrial safety helmets are personal protective equipment (PPE), used to protect the head against falls from a height. This study indicated the necessity of wearing a safety helmet while working at heights below 4 m, through analysis of fall accidents occurring in the industrial field. The stress, displacement, and strain of the safety helmet shell structure have been analyzed using the finite element method with various thicknesses, engineering plastics, and designs. It was preferred that the safety helmet shell structure had a reinforcement frame of uniform thickness in terms of increased impact strength and strain energy absorption rate. The thickness can be reduced to lighten the total weight for workers wearing safety helmets.

  • Purpose: As the number of people enjoying skiing and snowboarding which are two popular winter sports has been increasing, wearing helmet during doing these sports has been needed for safety. The rates of head or face injury have decreased after using helmet. However the effect that wearing helmet has on cervical damage is not yet to be known. So through this research we intend to be helpful in developing effective program and safety equipment. Materials and Methods: During two seasons from December 2009 to march 2011, cased 658 cervical injuries within 14538 admittance in medical center of major resort due to skiing and snow-boarding injuries. For survey and research model, one year before the research year conducted a pilot study. Admittance were 432 male and 226 female, advanced 273 and 385 novice. We divided them into two groups depending on wearing helmet, measured cervical damage ratio and injury mechanism, and researched the severity of damage and diagnosed injury. Each group used SPSS 12.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) to process data statistically. Results: The number of patients was 312 in skier and 346 in snow boarder. Patients wearing helmet were 146 in skier and 127 in snow boarder. Classification of each injuries were confirmed as 292 cases of simple sprain, 359 bruising, 6 cervical fractures and 1 case of dislocation. Classification of injury mechanisms were 287 of human collision, 212 material collision, 108 of slip down by oneself, 39 of falling and 12 cases of etc. In cases wearing helmet ski 78/ snow board 70 were simple sprain, ski 64/ snowboard 68 were shown as bruising, ski 1/ snow board 2 had cervical fracture or dislocation. The ratio of cervical sprain increased in cases of wearing helmet compared to non-wearing cases and there was a statistical significance (p<0.001). The ratio of cervical contusion increased significantly in non-wearing helmet user (p<0.05). However, there was no significant increase in fracture and dislocation compared between helmet user and non-user (p> 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, wearing helmet had no relation to additional cervical injury occurrence or severity among skiers and snow boarders. The ratio of cervical sprain increased significantly in helmet user with person to person accident. However, the cervical contusion decreased. On this ground, further biomechanical studies are required and modified helmet will be necessary.

  • Various operative techniques are available for the treatment of craniosynostosis. The patient's age at presentation is one of the most important factors in the determination of the surgical modality. Minimally invasive suturectomy and postoperative helmet therapy may be performed for relatively young infants, whose age is younger than 6 months. It relies upon the potential for rapid brain growth in this age group. Its minimal invasiveness is also advantageous. In this article, we review the advantages and limitations of minimally invasive suturectomy followed by helmet therapy for the treatment of craniosynostosis.

  • In order to protect the head, baseball helmet must to have proper strength and to absorb the kinetic energy. The purposes of this study are to validate whether the helmet have the protecting ability or not. We performed three kinds of experiment to know about the this ability. To find out the limit of displacement at 4 points(front, rear, right side, and left side), the static load by magnetic dial gauges were used, and to validate the ability of absorption, drop tests were peformed from 0.5 and 1.0 meter. Futhermore, we calculated natural frequency of the helmets by the principle of Lissajous Diagram and we performed FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis. From the results of these experiments, we found that the displacement of helmet was largest at rear point and it was smallest at left-side point(ear-covered part). The ability of absorption was better at the left-side point than the other points.

  • In this study, ballistic impact effects on a helmet were investigated using the AUTODYN-3D program. Two types of materials were used for manufacturing the helmet: single Kevlar and Steel/Kevlar hybrid composites. Furthermore, two types of bullets were used in the simulation: steel spherical and 7.62 mm full-jacketed. In the simulation, the shape deformation of the projectile and internal energy were calculated. From the results, impact velocities above 655 m/s and 845 m/s were required to perforate the Steel/Kevlar helmet with steel spherical and 7.62 mm full-jacketed bullets, respectively. The results show that there was a large difference between the ballistic resistance of the Kevlar and Steel/Kevlar helmets. For the simulation on an NIJ-STD-0106.01 Type II helmet, a 7.62 mm fulljacketed bullet with a striking velocity of 358 m/s was used. Simulation results show that the Steel/Kevlar helmet could resist a 7.62 mm full-jacketed bullet traveling at 358 m/s.
