In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated. The three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analyses were conducted to investigate the characteristics of welding residual stresses in welds of high strength steels on the basis of thermal and mechanical properites at high temperature obtained from the experiment. According to the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 steel deteriorated slowly to 10$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up, the tensile strength became better because of blue shortness, and it deteriorated radically after reaching to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. For the POSTEN80 steel, high temperature tensile strength deteriorated slowly to 20$0^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better and it deteriorated slowly to $600^{\circ}C$ after reached to the maximum value around 30$0^{\circ}C$. Strain of high strength steels at the elevated temperature increased radically after the mercury rose to $600^{\circ}C$. The strain hardening ratio of POSTEN60 steel was larger then that of POSTEN80 steel at the elevated temperature as in the case at the room temperature and it became smaller radically after the mercury rose to 40$0^{\circ}C$. And, in the welding of high strength steels, increasing tensile strength of the steel (POSTEN60
In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high tensile strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated by elevated temperature tensile test. According toe the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 deteriorated slowly to 100$^{\circ}C$. Four types of high Mn TWIP(Twinning Induced Plasticity) steels were fabricated by varying the Mn and Al content, and the tensile properties were measured at various strain rates and temperatures. An examination of the tensile properties at room temperature revealed an increase in strength with increasing strain rate because mobile dislocations interacted rapidly with the dislocations in localized regions, whereas elongation and the number of serrations decreased. The strength decreased with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation increased. A martensitic transformation occurred in the 18Mn, 22Mn and 18Mn1.6Al steels tested at $-196^{\circ}C$ due to a decrease in the stacking fault energies with decreasing temperature. An examination of the tensile properties at $-196^{\circ}C$ showed that the strength of the non-Al added high Mn TWIP steels was high, whereas the elongation was low because of the martensitic transformation and brittle fracture mode. Although a martensitic transformation did not occur in the 18Mn1.9Al steel, the strength increased with decreasing temperature because many twins formed in the early stages of the tensile test and interacted rapidly with the dislocations.
Over the past few decades, high-nitrogen austenitic steels have steadily received greater attention since they provide a unique combination of high strength and ductility, good corrosion resistance, and non-magnetic properties. Recently, highnitrogen 18Mn-18Cr austenitic steels with enhanced strength have been developed and widely used for generator retaining rings in order to prevent the copper wiring from being displaced by the centrifugal forces occurring during high-speed rotation. The high-nitrogen austenitic steels for generator retaining ring should be expanded at room temperature and then stress relief annealed at around $400^{\circ}C$ to achieve the required mechanical properties. In this study, four kinds of high-nitrogen 18Mn-18Cr austenitic steels with different nitrogen content were fabricated by using a pressurized vacuum induction melting furnace, and then the effects of nitrogen content, cold working, and stress relieving on tensile properties were investigated. The yield and tensile strengths increased proportionally with increasing nitrogen content and cold working, and they further increased after stress relieving treatment. Based on these results, a semi-empirical equation was proposed to predict the tensile strength of highnitrogen 18Mn-18Cr austenitic steels for generator retaining rings. It will be a useful for the effective fabrication of high-nitrogen 18Mn-18Cr austenitic steels for generator retaining rings with the required tensile properties.
Four air hardening steels with carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum variations have been used in this study to find out the optimal chemical compositions of steels with over 1200 MPa tensile strength for automotive subframe. The dimensional changes after heat treatment were determined for two automotive parts with open and closed cross sections using 3D scanner. When four steels were austenitized at 900℃ for 30 seconds, cooled at 3℃/s, reheated to 450℃ for 10 seconds followed by air cooling to simulate hot-dip galvanizing treatment showed ultra high tensile strength over 1200 MPa. Rear floor cross member with open cross section revealed much bigger dimensional changes than subframe with closed cross section after heat treatment at 900℃ for 20 minutes followed by air cooling.
Ferritic stainless steels of the 400 series have been available for automotive exhaust system, heat exchanger, radiater etc. in various industrial because heat resistance, corrosion resistance and strength are excellent. Especially, automotive exhaust system is required good heat resistance because typical temperature of exhaust system exposed during operation of engine is reach up to $800^{\circ}C$. However, research for effect of high temperature in ferritic stainless steels is not enough. In this study, high temperature tensile properties of lap weld of ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) were investigated. In accordance with heat input, lap welds had been produced and were evaluated at high temperature($800^{\circ}C$) to compare high temperature tensile properties. In addition, room temperature tensile tests were carried out for non-aging and aging specimens. As a result of R.T tensile test, non-aging specimens were fractured in base metal except for low heat input specimen and aging specimens were fractured in weld metal. Also high temperature tensile test were carried out by aging specimen. After high temperature tensile test, fracture of aged specimen was occurred in base metal except for low heat input specimen. Fracture surface of low heat input specimen in weld metal was confirmed as brittle fracture with observation using scanning electron microscope(SEM). Significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength (between 82 and 85%) was observed for aged ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) when tested at high temperature.
This study is concerned with tensile and Charpy impact properties of high-strength bainitic steels fabricated by controlled rolling process. Six kinds of steels were fabricated by varying finish rolling temperature, start cooling temperature, and cooling rate, and their microstructures and tensile and Charpy impact properties were investigated. Their effective grain sizes were also characterized by the electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The microstructures of the steels rolled in the single phase region were most similar to those of the steels rolled in the two phase region. The steels cooled from $700{^{\circ}C}$ were composed mainly of granular bainites, while those cooled from $600{^{\circ}C}$ contained a number of bainitic ferrites, which resulted in the decrease in ductility and upper shelf energy in spite of the increase in strength. In the steels cooling from $600^{\circ}C$, fine acicular ferrites were well formed when the cooling rate was slow, which led to the best combination of high ductility, high upper shelf energy, and low energy transition temperature according to the decrease in the overall effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrites having smaller effective grain size.
Effects of B and Cu additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength bainitic steels were investigated in this study. Six kinds of high-strength bainitic steels with different B and Cu contents were fabricated by thermo-mechanical control process composed of controlled rolling and accelerated cooling. The microstructures of the steels were analyzed using optical and transmission microscopy, and the tensile and impact tests were conducted on them in order to investigate the correlation of microstructure with mechanical properties. Depending on the addition of B and Cu, various low-temperature transformation products such as GB (granular bainite), DUB (degenerated upper bainite), LB (lower bainite), and LM (lath martensite) were formed in the steels. The addition of B and Cu increased the yield and tensile strengths because of improved hardenability and solid solution strengthening, but decreased the ductility and low-temperature toughness. The steels containing both B and Cu had a very high strength above 1.0 GPa, but showed a worse low-temperature toughness of higher DBTT (ductile-to-brittle transition temperature) and lower absorbed energy. On the other hand, the steels having GB and DUB showed a good combination of tensile and impact properties in terms of strength, ductility, yield ratio, absorbed energy, and DBTT.
The effect of C, Mn, and Al additions on the tensile and Charpy impact properties of austenitic high-manganese steels for cryogenic applications is investigated in terms of the deformation mechanism dependent on stacking fault energy and austenite stability. The addition of the alloying elements usually increases the stacking fault energy, which is calculated using a modified thermodynamic model. Although the yield strength of austenitic high-manganese steels is increased by the addition of the alloying elements, the tensile strength is significantly affected by the deformation mechanism associated with stacking fault energy because of grain size refinement caused by deformation twinning and mobile dislocations generated during deformation-induced martensite transformation. None of the austenitic high-manganese steels exhibit clear ductile-brittle transition behavior, but their absorbed energy gradually decreases with lowering test temperature, regardless of the alloying elements. However, the combined addition of Mn and Al to the austenitic high-manganese steels suppresses the decrease in absorbed energy with a decreasing temperature by enhancing austenite stability.
This present study deals with the microstructure and tensile properties of 600 MPa-grade high strength and seismic resistant reinforcing steels. The high strength reinforcing steel (SD 600) was fabricated by Tempcore processing, while the seismic resistant reinforcing steel (SD 600S) was air-cooled after hot-rolling treatment. The microstructure analysis results showed that the SD 600 steel specimen consisted of a tempered martensite and ferrite-pearlite structure after Tempcore processing, while the SD 600S steel specimen had a fully ferrite-pearlite structure. The room-temperature tensile test results indicate that, because of the enhanced solid solution and precipitation strengthening caused by relatively higher contents of C, Mn, Si and V in the SD 600S steel specimen, this specimen, with fully ferrite-pearlite structure, had yield and tensile strengths higher than those of the SD 600 specimen. On the other hand, the hardness of the SD 600 and SD 600S steel specimens changed in different ways according to location, dependent on the microstructure, ferrite grain size, and volume fraction.
