  • Image enhancement for Infrared imaging system is mainly based on the global histogram equalization. The global histogram equalization(GHE) is a method in which each pixel is equalized by using a whole histogram of an image. GHE is speedy and effective for real-time imaging system but its method fails to enhance the fine details. On the other hand, the basic local histogram equalization(LHE) method uses sliding a window and. the pixels under the window region are equalized over the whole output dynamic range. The LHE is adequate to enhance the fine details. But this method is computationally slow and noises are over-enhanced. So various local histogram equalization methods have been already presented to overcome these problems of LHE. In this paper, a new regional dynamic range histogram equalization (RDRHE) is presented. RDRHE improves the equalization quality while reducing the computational burden.

  • The paper presents a histogram equalization method using the edge information of an image to be processed. The basic idea of this method is to carry out histogram equalization with edge information, which is important and essential for object conformation. In the proposed method, the edge information is used to generate histogram for the equalization process. It is found to be effective to suppress the histogram spikes that cause quantum jumps in mapping function for the equalization process. The proposed method is tested for randomly selected 30 images and compared to conventional approaches with a quantitative measure to check it preserves the structural similarity. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance and no artifacts caused by histogram spikes.

  • Wang and Ward developed an image contrast enhancement method called WTHE (Weighted and Thresholded Histogram Equalization). In this paper, we propose an improved variant of WTHE called DWTHE(Decomposable WTHE) that enhances WTHE through the use of histogram decomposition. Specifically, DWTHE divides an input histogram by using image's mean brightness or equally-spaced brightness points, computes a probability value for each sub-histogram, modifies the sub-histograms by using those probability values as weights, and then performs histogram equalization on the modified input histogram. As opposed to WTHE that uses a single weight, DWTHE uses multiple weights derived from histogram decomposition. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the previous histogram equalization based methods.

  • Here, we present a new framework for histogram equalization in which both local and global contrasts are enhanced using neighborhood metrics. When checking neighborhood information, filters can simultaneously improve image quality. Filters are chosen depending on image properties, such as noise removal and smoothing. Our experimental results confirmed that this does not increase the computational cost because the filtering process is done by our proposed arrangement of making the histogram while checking neighborhood metrics simultaneously. If the two methods, i.e., histogram equalization and filtering, are performed sequentially, the first method uses the original image data and next method uses the data altered by the first. With combined histogram equalization and filtering, the original data can be used for both methods. The proposed method is fully automated and any spatial neighborhood filter type and size can be used. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed method is more effective than other similar techniques reported previously.

  • This paper presents a histogram equalization based on the nonlinear transformation function for enhancing the quality of medical images. The nonlinear transformation function is applied to adaptively equalize the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. The logistic function is used as a nonlinear transformation function, which is calculated by only using the intensity level with maximum frequency and the maximum intensity level in an histogram, and the total number of pixels. The proposed method has been applied for equalizing 8 medical images with a different resolution and histogram distribution. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the superior enhancement performances compared with the conventional histogram equalization. And the proposed histogram equalization can be used in various multimedia systems in real-time.

  • In case brightness distribution is concentrated in a region, it is difficult to classify the image features. To solve this problem, we apply global histogram equalization and local histogram equalization to images. In case of global histogram equalization, it can be too bright or dark because it doesn't consider the density of brightness distribution. Thus, it is difficult to enhance the local contrast in the images. In case of local histogram equalization, it can produce unexpected blocks in the images. In order to enhance the contrast in the images, this paper proposes a local histogram equalization based on the Gaussian Mixture Models(GMMs) in regions of histogram. Mean and variance parameters in each regions is updated EM-algorithm repeatedly and then ranges of equalization on each regions. The experimental results performed with image of various contrasts show that the proposed algorithm is better than the global histogram equalization.

  • In this paper, an advanced histogram equalization algorithm for contrast enhancement is presented. Histogram equalization is the most popular algorithm. Global histogram equalization is simple and fast, but its contrast enhancement power is relatively low. Local histogram equalization, on the other hand, can enhance overall contrast more effectively, but the complexity of computation required is very high. In this paper, a low pass filter type mask is used to get a sub-block histogram equalization function to more simply produce the high contrast. The low pass filter type mask is realized by partially overlapped sub-block histogram equalization (POSHE). With the proposed method. the computation overhead is reduced by a factor of about one hundred compared to that of local histogram equalization while still achieving high contrast.

  • Histogram equalization is extensively used for image contrast enhancement in various applications due to its effectiveness and its modest functions. In image research, image enhancement is one of the most significant and arduous technique. The image enhancement aim is to improve the visual appearance of an image. Different kinds of images such as satellite images, medical images, aerial images are affected from noise and poor contrast. So it is important to remove the noise and improve the contrast of the image. Therefore, for this purpose, we apply a median filter on MR image as the median filter remove the noise and preserve the edges effectively. After applying median filter on MR image we have used intensity transformation function on the filtered image to increase the contrast of the image. Than applied the histogram equalization (HE) technique on the filtered image. The simple histogram equalization technique over enhances the brightness of the image due to which the important information can be lost. Therefore, adaptive histogram equalization (AHE) and contrast limited histogram equalization (CLAHE) techniques are used to enhance the image without losing any information.

  • In this letter, we propose a new histogram equalization technique for feature compensation in speech recognition under noisy environments. The proposed approach combines a signal-to-noise-ratio-dependent feature reconstruction method and the class histogram equalization technique to effectively reduce the acoustic mismatch present in noisy speech features. Experimental results from the Aurora 2 task confirm the superiority of the proposed approach for acoustic feature compensation.

  • In a previous work, we proposed a novel approach of histogram equalization using a supplement set which is composed of centroids of Fuzzy C-Means of the background utterances. The performance of the proposed method is affected by the size of the supplement set, but it is difficult to find the best size at the point of recognition. In this paper, we propose a histogram equalization using a supplement set for majority voting based speaker identification. The proposed method identifies test utterances using a majority voting on the histogram equalization methods with various sizes of supplement sets. The proposed method is compared with the conventional feature normalization methods such as CMN(Cepstral Mean Normalization), MVN(Mean and Variance Normalization), and HEQ(Histogram Equalization) and the histogram equalization method using a supplement set.
