This study identifies the need of nursing home services determined by health care professionals and estimates the proportion of elderly people requiring nursing home service according to the admission criteria. Surveys were conducted on health care professionals including medical doctors, home care nurses, and nurse practitioners. They were asked to assess nursing home need based on four content areas: Physical function (Activities of Daily Living), chronic disease, Physical symptoms (incontinence), mobility, eating, and sensory function. Based on the professionally determined need criteria the proportion of elderly people requiring nursing home services was estimated using secondary data from the 1994 Survey on the Living Status of the Korean Elderly. The number of study subjects to estimate nursing home need who were 60 and older totaled 2,058. The most important factor contributing to the admission eligibility criteria was the elderly living alone. Other factors related were the elderly being unable or having difficulty carrying out activities, and having insufficient help from other our activities, and having insufficient help from other members of the household. Using only physical function, the proportion of elderly people requiring nursing home was $8{\sim}9%$. When only chronic disease was used, proportions varied widely; for the doctor's group, the proportion was over 30%. Using all areas, the proportions of elderly people requiring nursing home were between 13% and 38%. The estimate using chronic disease and physical function was similar to the on using all areas.

Health behavior in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=.88, p=.492). However, questionnaire of "only the elderly couple lives" showed the highest health behavior score as an average 3.05$({\pm}.24)$. Life satisfaction in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=1.67, p=.143). There was a positive correlation between empowerment, health behaviors and life satisfaction. Conclusion: Considering that the single home which only the elderly people reside is the one of general family patterns of the aged people, the elderly people shall acknowledge the difference of values between a family pattern which takes a serious view of family or sons/daughters and a family pattern which reflects a weak supporting consciousness by a nuclear family. • Korean society is experiencing rapid changes which are certain to shape the lives of the older people and their families. So, the purpose of this study was to improve the quality of the elderly welfare service in Korea. Even though the interest about the elderly welfare in Korea is rapidly on the increase, the reality of Korean Society still leaves much to be desired, quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Pay attent to this point, now going to grasp the situation of not the handicapped elder people but the general elder people actual life condition and demand for welfare. So this study focused on the demand of not out-of home service but in-home care service. It was based on the data from by Korea National Statistical Office, having observed 6,139 elderly people. The results were as follows. They hope to get the elderly welfare services about health examination service, nursing survice, supporting service for household. That was, the most of them wanted in-home care service than out-of home care service. To ensure effective care to the elderly, it needed development and settlement of welfare service in face of their daily living. And, even though they recognized that they should cover the elderly life expenses themselves, the rate was hit that indicated their adult children as a parents supporter. This means that we should consider not only to the elder people but also to the family which contained the old people as the elderly welfare service. As a remedy, we can find the cooperation between elder welfare service at the social welfare organization and counsel, education at the family strengthen center. To improve the quality of the elderly welfare service in Korea, the elderly welfare service should focus not only on the physical and spiritual health maintenance but also active understanding living environment and growing ability to arbitrate between individual and living.

  • Recently, the korean statistical information service reported that the elder people aged over 65 years take 11 percentage point of all population, indicating that the hyper-elder era will advent shortly. As a result, there are remarkably increasing demands for providing self-organizable home agent system for elder people. Of the home agent system, the ubiquitous home service is known to be useful to overcome this problem. However, current ubiquitous home services limited to provide functional services, and it can be observed that there is lack of consideration for elder-support products which are closely interacted with elder people in the living situation. In this paper, we analyze senior aids products that can be combined to the ubiquitous home service, and propose design procedure for senior aids products that can be applied to self-organizable ubiquitous services. We studied characteristics of elder people, current state of affairs for senior aids products, and home services that are highly required by elder people. Moreover, we observed that the ubiquitous home services related to health, safety, and amenity are urgently needed, and those services can be categorized according to residential areas. Following those observances, we proposed a design principle based on the universal design paradigm to provide self-organizable ubiquitous home service environment for elder people using senior aids products.
