Evaluation of Characteristics of CBN Honing Stone for Cylinder Liner Honing of Marine Diesel Engine

  • The cylinder liner of a low speed engine is one of the most important parts of the marine diesel engines used in merchant ships. However, a sufficient degree of precision in the manufacturing method for these cylinder liners has never existed. Conventional honing stones have always been used for machining large marine cylinder liners. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a honing process that optimizes the honing characteristics. In this study, a CBN honing stone was manufactured to improve the honing performance for a cylinder liner and shorten the processing time, and machining experiments on a practical cylinder liner were carried out. Then, a comparison was made between the CBN honing and honing with a conventional GC stone using parameters such as the honing time, machining quantity, and honing cost. As a result, for a #60 CBN stone, the machining amount was significantly improved compared to the conventional one by about $1.1{\mu}m$/min, and in respect to the machining cost, a reduction of about 57% was achieved. However, an improvement in the process with a #800 CBN stone could not be expected because it did not show a significant difference compared to the case of the existing stone. From the above results, if the liner were honed using a CBN honing stone, the rough machining and intermediate processing during an early stage of the honing process were excellent compared to the conventional one. However, we could not find a significant difference in the case of finish honing.

  • This study deals with the effect of the honing in SCM420H planetary gears. The hardness, tooth profile, lead and roughness of the gear surface can be improved by honing. Therein, the honing techniques are welcomed especially as one of the physical surface improvement methods. As a result, gear honing reduces vibration and noise, and will increase the life of gear. And gear honing also changes the surface of gear tooth in a short time and price, so it is a very important method in manufacturing industry. But nowadays, it is hard to find the detail information of gear honing. The test gear is a planetary gear which is used in the automotive industry. It is manufactured by the hobbing, shaving, carburizing and honing. This study investigates the effect of honing in surface shape of SCM420H planetary gears, including fatigue strength test and characteristics of honing of SCM420H planetary gears.

  • Grinding technology in morden industry society is focusing on research and development for grinding stone and machin-ing parts for the purpose of high accuracy and high efficiency of products. But in order to equip the high technology and high accuracy of micro stone which is one of grinding stone a continuous effort on R& D is require. In this study the honing processing work of 2 cycle engine cylinder for motorcycle which has an open hole is carried out so as to investigate the boring and hone stone effects on accuracy of honing. As the experimental result of this study we could conclude that it is possible to secure good conditions of honing by controlling and keeping appropriate cycle-time in the stage of boring for the prior step of honing.

As the result of analyzing the results of experiments, we came to conclusion that we can secure good conditions of honing by controlling and keeping appropriate cycle-time in the stage of boring of prior step of honing.

Polishing Characteristics and Development of Automatic Die Polishing Machine by Liquid Honing (액체호닝에 의한 금형 자동 사상기계개발 및 가공 특성)

  • The automatic die polishing machine by liquid honing has been developed and experimented on the surface of machined die. The goal of development in the automatic die polishing machine by liquid honing is to increase the accuracy and the productivity in die polishing. To reach this goal, the polishing machine consists of the automatic measuring device for contour of die, the nozzle and pumping system to spray the powder mixed with liquid, and the 3-axis guides. Before polishing, the measuring device with a semiconductor laser scans the surface of mould to get the data of contour. The data store a PC and use to control the nozzle head to move above a couple of centimeters on the machined surface of die. The experimental parameters are the spraying time, the pressure, the size of abrasive grain and the mixing ratio between abrasive grain and liquid. The surface roughness is measured on the polished die which are SKDl 1 and Al7075 machined by NC. The surface roughness indicates the values of Rmax 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for Al7075 and Rmax 1.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for SKDl 1. It reduces the polishing time significantly and reduces the monotonous work for labors. As the results, the liquid honing system is useful method to apply for the die polishing and the automatic die polishing machine using liquid honing shows that it's very effective processing ability.

  • Since gasoline engines are based on a combination of a cast iron liner and an aluminum block, which have different thermal properties and stiffnesses, bore shape distortion is likely to occur during honing due to uneven thermal deformation. To solve this problem, many tests and evaluations are needed to support the development of a high-performance honing stone with low heat generation. Moreover, performance evaluation, which depends on inspection and observation after work, often requires much trial and error to optimize tool design, due to challenges in the accurate interpretation of results. This study confirmed that the assessment of grinding capability was clarified by evaluating performance under severe work conditions and by in-situ measurement and recording of current consumption (workload) and heat generation during operation. As a result of using a honing stone with excellent grinding performance in engine block manufacture-in which cylinder bore distortion caused by thermal deformation during manufacture is a problem-a noticeable improvement in the degree of cylindricity was observed.

  • This study is to evaluate the tool performance in honing using diamond reamer and present grounds whether the localized products are sufficiently competitive comparing with the existing imported ones. The heads of the tool performance evaluation are roundness, roughness, tool life of the workpiece and so on. When evaluating the tool performance, cutting process is divided by three areas which are rough semi-finish and finish cut. cloning improves the accuracy such as boring and reaming after manufacturing the inside diameter, and finishing directly by honing is a recent trend. This honing is used greatly In hard cutting materials like cemented carbides and it is the CBN and diamond that is used in hard cutting materials. Both of them are expensive and most oi them are imported.

  • In the paper, a kind of self-tuning PID control system is designed to keep the honing coolant temperature constant in the process of automobile engine production. The conventional PID control method and the Fuzzy PID control method both are used to design and make the simulation experiment in Matlab. According to the simulation result, the performance of Fuzzy PID control method is obviously better. The Fuzzy PID control system can react faster to get the target temperature and resume normal when external conditions exchanged.

Process Quality Improvement through Improving Measurement System for Internal Diameter of Gun Barrel (포신 내경 측정시스템 개선을 통한 공정품질 향상)

  • Purpose: The variation of the internal diameters of gun barrel incurs a lot of reworks in gun barrel manufacturing process and the significant quality problem of gun barrel. And it is likely to stem from the current measurement system for the internal diameter of gun barrel and the related manufacturing process as well. The purpose of this study is to improve the gun barrel manufacturing process through improving measurement system. Methods: The improved measurement system using laser can measure the internal diameters of gun barrel more accurately, and the properly adjusted honing process reduces the variation of internal diameters of gun barrel. Results: Comparing the mean square error of internal diameters for 6 gun barrels measured before and after process improvement shows that the variation of gun barrel internal diameters was significantly reduced after the process improvement. Conclusion: The introduction of improved measurement system for the internal diameters of gun barrel and the adjustment of related honing process results in the reduction of reworks of gun barrels and their internal diameter variations.
