  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical applicability of a ridge splitting technique for reconstruction of narrowed edentulous alveolar ridges for dental implantation. 41 patients with 47 edentulous areas were included in this study. After corticotomy of a rectangular buccal segment and about 3-4 weeks healing period, the alveolar ridge was splitted, implant was placed. The initial ridge width varied between 2.5 and 7.0mm, average was 3.99mm. 68 dental implants were placed, and the gap between the implants and the bone is filled with various bone graft material, or none. All splitted sites showed sufficient bone volume for insertion of the implants at the moment of implantation. Over 1 year of follow-up period, five implants(7.3%) had mobility in two patients, among them, 2 implants(2.9%) sustained infection and removed. And any other complications were not noted. Our conclussion is that ridge splitting of the narrow edentulous area is a reliable and safe procedure in horizontally deficient ridges.

  • Soot generation by combustion process has been investigated with objective of understanding of chemical reaction responsible for its formation in a coaxial laminar propane jet diffusion flame. For the direct photos, as the coflowing air flow rate is reduced, the area of soot luminous zone increases at first, then becomes smaller and smaller, and even disappears. The aspects of soot deposition can be acquired by using nine $15{\mu}m$ thin SiC fibers are positioned horizontally across the flame. Deposited soots on SiC fibers show the soot inception point and growth and soot oxidation zone in a typical propane diffusion. Soot is not generated anymore in a oxidizer deficient conditions of near-extinction and flame is fully occupied by transparent blue flame. It suggests that nonsooting pyroligneous blue reaction is being dominant in a oxidizer deficient ambience. In comparison with luminosities of SiC fibers and flame itself, indirect evidence is found that the process of soot nucleation and growth is endothermic reaction. It is remarkable that there exists two adjacent regions to have antithesis characteristics; one is exothermic reaction of blue flame and another endothermic reaction zone of soot formation.

  • In case of the insufficient horizontal bone loss, a regular diameter implant is not possible without lateral bone augmentation. In this situation, narrow diameter implants (NDIs) could be the alternative to lateral bone augmentation procedures. However, complication generally expected with the NDI is implant fracture. Recently, the survival rate and success rate of NDI in the posterior region are similar to that of standard-diameter implants (SDIs). These 3 case reports demonstrate the incorporation of NDI to replace missing mandibular posterior teeth. So far, the follow-up examination period was maintained and no unusual complications were presented for more than four years. Long term follow-up clinical data are needed to confirm the excellent clinical performance of these implants.
