Effects of Horsetail, Alfalfa, Ortie, Chêne and Aleppo oak as Potential Hemostatic Agents on Laboratory Coagulation Tests

  • This study investigated the effect of ethanol extracts of horsetail, alfalfa, ortie, chêne and aleppo oak on blood coagulation in vitro. Extraction was performed by the maceration method. Extracts were mixed with platelet and plasma, then prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and platelet aggregation tests were conducted. Alfalfa extract had a dose-dependent effect on the PT. Ortie, and horsetail, reduced the PT significantly compared to control group. Alfalfa, horsetail, and ortie reduced the APTT, but their effect was insignificant compared to the control group. The pooled extract showed the highest effect compared to the single extracts in a dose-dependent manner. Horsetail and alfalfa induced platelet aggregation in response to arachidonic acid but not in response to collagen. In the case of ortie, no aggregation occurred regarding the arachidonic acid, and incomplete was observed in response to collagen. Interestingly, blood clotting occurred immediately after adding the chêne, aleppo oak and the pooled extract, and therefore platelet poor plasma (PPP) and platelet rich plasma (PRP) became jelly. Generally, chêne and aleppo oak, as well as pooled extract, were more effective in inducing both primary and secondary coagulation pathways via shortening the PT and APTT, and induction of platelet aggregation.

일부 식용식물이 랫트의 카드뮴 중독에 미치는 防禦效果와 酵素反應 (Protective Effect and Enzyme Activity of Field Horsetail, Mugwort and Champignon on the Cadmium Poisoning of Rat)

  • The concentrations of cadmium, metallothionein(MT), superoxide dismutase(SOD), and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) were investigated in liver and kidney of rats which were fed the water containing 50 or 100ppm cadmium chloride with basal diet(group A), 5% horsetail diet(group, B), 5% mugwort diet(group C) and 5% champignon diet(group D) for weeks. Cadmium in liver decreased for the first 12 weeks of treatment, but thereafter increased, and was lower in experimental group B,C,D than in control group A. Cadmium in kidney increased linearly during the 16 weeks of treatment, and was lower in group B than in group A. MT in liver decreased for the first 12 weeks of treatment in group A, but increased linearly during the 16 weeks in group B,C,D, higher in group B than in group A. There were significantly higher accumulation of cadmium and MT in liver than in kidney in the beginning of cadmium treatment, but reversed in the ending of treatment. The SOD and LDH activities were not affected during the 16 weeks treatment, and there was no significant difference between groups. Histologic examination revealed moderate to severe hepatic and renal injury in group A compared to horsetail diet group B. These results indicate that the kidney is a major target organ of chronic cadmium poisoning, and suggest that Cd-induced hepatic injury, via release of Cd-MT, may play an important role in the nephrotoxicity. In addition, higher MT concentrations in liver and kidney in the group B constitute a plausible explanation of the protective effects of horsetail diet against the cadmium toxicity in relation to histologic findings.

한국 원예식품의 항산화 비타민 함량 분석 (Determination of Antioxidant Vitamins in Horticultural foods)

  • This study examines the effects of the Korean horticultural foods which are, by traditional wisdom, supposed to contain anti-aging substance. All twenty three kinds of plants are chosen as a sample for the experiment in which the content of three main anti-aging nutrients, -carotene, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E are respectively measured by Nilis, Colorimetric, and AOAC method. The result shows: among the samples, top six plants that contain the most -carotene content are high quality tea(Camellia sinensis), thistle(Cirsium japonicum Var.), Angelica keiskei, mulberry leaves(Morus alba l.), field horsetail(Equisetum arvensa), and carrot(Daucus carota), in order; top four for a Vitamin C contents are low quality tea, mulberry leaves, pine leaves(Pinus densiflora), and high quality tea, in order; top four for a Vitamin E contents are persimmon leaves(Diospyros mongolicum) tea, high quality tea, low quality tea, and pine leaves, in order. Drying or boiling process increases the content of -carotene and Vitamin E in high quality tea, dropwort(Oenanthe javanica), field horsetail, and wild aster(Ligularia stenocephala Marsumum et Koldzumi), while, in case of mulberry leaves, drying process lowers them. Vitamin C content strikingly decreases in heating and drying process.

Crack initiation and fragmentation processes in pre-cracked rock-like materials

  • This paper focuses on the cracking and fragmentation process in rock materials containing a pair of non-parallel flaws, which are through the specimen thickness, under vertical compression. Several numerical experiments are conducted with varying flaw arrangements that affect the initiation and tensile wing cracks, shear crack growth, and crack coalescing behaviors. To obtain realistic numerical results, a parallelized peridynamics formulation coupled with a finite element method, which is able to capture arbitrarily occurring cracks, is employed. From previous studies, crack initiation and propagation of tensile wing cracks, horsetail cracks, and anti-wing cracks are well understood along with the coalescence between two parallel flaws. In this study, the coalescence behaviors, their fragmentation sequences, and the role of an x-shaped shear band in rock material containing two non-parallel flaws are discussed in detail on the basis of simulation results strongly correlated with previous experimental results. Firstly, crack initiation and propagation of tensile wing cracks and shear cracks between non-parallel flaws are investigated in time-history and then sequential coalescing behavior is analyzed. Secondly, under the effect of varying inclination angles of two non-parallel flaws and overlapping ratios between a pair of non-parallel flaws, the cracking patterns including crack coalescence, fragmentation, and x-shaped shear band are investigated. These numerical results, which are in good agreement with reported physical test results, are expected to provide insightful information of the fracture mechanism of rock with non-parallel flaws.

양산단층대 북부 유계-보경사지역의 조구조지형학적 분석 (Tectonic Geomorphology on Yugye-Bogyeongsa Area of Yangsan Fault Zone)

  • The Yangsan Fault is one of the main fault systems in the Korean peninsula. It can be divided into three segments (northern, central, and southern) by its paleoseismic and structural geologic properties. Based on the geomorphic features of the northern segment, which includes the Yugye Fault, we identified deflected streams as a geomorphic marker of strike-slip component of the fault, and knickpoints along the streams as evidence of dip-slip component of the fault. Geomorphic analyses showed that (1) the horizontal displacements of deflected streams decreased and (2) the retreat amounts of knickpoints tend to increased toward north along the lineament. We interpreted the variations caused by strain partitioning; that is, there might be some increases of the vertical component toward north, whereas the main strike-slip fault system dies out, splaying into horsetail structure toward north. Based on the response time of the landforms, these interpretations imply that (1) there were differences between horizontal slip rate and vertical slip rate along strike, and/or (2) there were different timings between horizontal and vertical deformations by fault.

택지개발지구내 양서류 서식처로서 묵논습지의 특성과 기능평가 (Assessment of Characteristics and Functions of Abandoned Rice Paddy Wetlands as Habitats for the Amphibia within Land Development Districts)

  • The current study analyzed appropriateness of abandoned rice paddy wetlands as habitats for the Amphibia by assessing functions and value of abandoned rice paddy wetlands within land development districts as a habitat for living creatures and researching into the Amphibia living in the subject districts. For this purpose, the study designated abandoned rice paddy wetlands within Hwaseong A District and Pangyo B District under land development as subject lands. Those wetlands went through succession after abandonment of farming. Detailed study results are as follows. From classification of wetland types and an analysis of their characteristics, it was found that herbaceous plants such as smartweed communities, horsetail communities and reed communities, and woody plants such as pussy willow communities appeared in both districts. These abandoned rice paddy wetlands shows typical characteristics of palustrine wetlands. As a result of a vegetation structure research, it was observed that succession has been progressed for at least over 2~3 years. In assessment of wetland functions by item, it was found that they are developing into fine wetlands in terms of functions because they are ranked over Moderate Class except separate distance from streams. Also from a research into animals living in the abandoned rice paddy wetlands, it was found that main inhabitants are Rana nigromaculata,Rana dybowskii, Hyla japonica, Bufo bufo gargarizans, etc. It can be confirmed that the abandoned rice paddy wetlands are providing appropriate conditions as habitats to the Amphibia in a view that those species have life cycles of inhabitation (shores and wetlands) - egg-laying (rice paddy, puddles and swampy places) - hibernation (rice field banks and swampy places). From this point of view, it was found that abandoned rice paddy wetlands that developed because of abandonment of farming can be used as means to improve structure and functions of habitats.

잔디밭 잡초 바랭이와 민들레 방제를 위한 살초활성 약용식물의 탐색 (Screening for Herbicidal Medicinal Plants against Digitaria Sanguinalis and Taraxacum Platycarpum in Turf)

  • 본 연구에서는 잔디밭 문제 잡초인 바랭이(Digitaria sanguinalis L.)와 민들레(Taraxacum platycarpum H. DAHLST.)에 대한 약용식물 추출물 23종의 살초활성을 조사하였다. 페트리디쉬 검정에서 효과가 나타난 약용식물 추출물을 선발하여 포트에서 발아전 처리를 하였으며, 그 결과 바랭이에서는 울금(61%)과 천궁(62.5%) 추출물에서 발아억제 효과가 나타났으며, 민들레에서는 가죽나무(77.8%) 추출물에서 발아억제 효과가 나타났다. 경엽처리에서는 두 초종 모두 가죽나무 추출물에서 살초효과가 우수한 것으로 나타났다.

강원도 고냉지 씨감자 경작자들의 잡초방제 및 제초제 사용 실태 (Weed control and herbicide usage by seed potato growers in Kangwon alpine area)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 강원도 고냉지 씨감자 경작자들의 잡초방제 및 제초제 사용에 따른 문제점을 파악하는데 있다. 강원도 평창군, 횡성군, 강릉시에 거주하는 씨감자 경작자 196명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 후, 결과를 통계 분석하였다. 씨감자 경작자들은 경작지에 문제가 되는 주요 잡초로 여뀌, 명아주, 쑥, 닭의장풀, 바랭이, 봄여뀌, 별꽃, 쇠뜨기, 쇠비름을 들었다. 전체 응답자의 58%는 paraquat, pendimethalin, metribuzin 등 많은 제초제들을 단독 혹은 혼합하여 기준약량보다 2배처리하여도 여뀌, 쇠뜨기, 쑥, 둑새풀, 닭의장풀, 피는 방제가 힘들다고 답하였으며, 또 응답자의 34%는 현재 사용중인 제초제들을 $3{\sim}5$년 정도 연용하고 있다고 밝히고 있다. 조사대상자들은 paraquat, fluazifop-butyl 등 감자경작용으로 등록되지 않는 제초제들도 사용하고 있으며, 현재 사용되고 있는 제초제는 경작자 본인의 경험에 의한 선택(51%)과 농약상의 추천(34%)에 의하여 주로 선정되고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 전체 응답자의 67%는 제초제의 남,오용으로 인하여 작물피해를 입은 경험이 있고, 75%는 제초제 처리시 혹은 후 제초제에 중독된 경험이 있다고 응답하였다. 강원도 고냉지 씨감자 경작자들은 제초제의 남,오용으로 경제적 피해는 물론 중독증상까지 경험하고 있으므로, 이 지역 경작자를 대상으로 한 올바른 제초제의 선정 및 사용법에 대한 체계적인 교육프로그램이 개발, 보급되어야할 것이다.

야쿠티아의 동토지역에 서식하는 생물의 추운기후-순화의 조절에서 식물 지방산의 역할 (The Role of Plant Fatty Acids in Regulation of the Adaptation of Organisms to the Cold Climate in Cryolithic Zone of Yakutia)

  • 자연상태에서 녹색인 채로 눈에 덮여 있는 냉동사료 엽채식물은 초식동물의 생물활성물질과 영양분의 근원이 된다. 우리는 Avena sativa, Elytrigia repens, Equisetum variegatum과 Equisetum scirpoides의 잎에서 가을에 전체 지방산 함량이 상당히 증가함을 관찰하였다. 그러나, 여름에 채취한 잎에 비하여 눈에 덮혀 얼어있는 식물에서 지방산 불포화도의 증가는 없었다(북반부 온도최저점 지역에 서식하는 키가 작은 쇠뜨기인 E. scirpoides는 예외임). 야쿠티아 말의 내부 지방조직(젊은 말의 고기)에서, 18개의 지방산이 분석되었고, 그 중 10개가 포화 지방산이었다. 그 중 70%에 해당하는 양으로 단일불포화 올레산(С18:1(n-9))과 고도불포화 α-리놀렌산이 비슷하게 분포하였다. 내부 지방조직에 이렇게 많은 고도불포화 지방산이 많이 분포하는 것은 가을과 겨울에 먹인 녹색 먹이의 영향으로 본다. 우리는 야쿠티아 말의 조직에 상당한 양으로 분포하는 식물 특이적 지방산 함량은 이 말들이 오래 동안 저온 스트레스 상황에서 저항성을 가질 수 있은 조절기작에 중요한 역할을 한다고 제안한다.
