  • Query by humming is an effective and intuitive querying mechanism when a user wants to find a song without knowing lyrics. The query by humming system takes a user-hummed melody as input, compares it with melodies in a music database, and returns top-k similar melodies to the input. In this paper, we propose a novel algebra for query by humming, and design and implement a real query by humming system called HummingBase by exploiting the algebra. By analyzing existing similarity search techniques, we derive 10 core operators for the algebra. By using the well-defined algebra, we can easily implement such a system in a extensible and modular way. With two case studies, we show that the proposed algebra can easily represent the query processing processes of existing query-by-humming systems.

  • Music query by humming is a challenging problem since the humming signal inevitably contains much variation and inaccuracy. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm for querying a wanted song from music database by humming its melody. In order to suit or adapt the inaccurate peoples humming, a new melody representation technique is proposed. Our algorithm is basically a pitch and duration information-based one and performs fairly well. 85% of correct query rate of the song is achieved for the top 3 matches when tested with 20 songs.

  • In this paper, humming based automatic music creation method is described. It is difficult for the general public which does not have music theory to compose the music in general. However, almost people can make the main melody by a humming. With this motivation, a melody and chord sequences are estimated by the humming analysis. In this paper, humming is generated without a metronome. Then based on the estimated chord sequence, accompaniment is generated using the MIDI template matched to each chord. The 5 Genre is supported in the music creation. The melody transcription is evaluated in terms of onset and pitch estimation accuracy and MOS evaluation is used for created music evaluation.

  • This study does a qualitative and quantitative analysis of how music by humming is being used by music educators in the classroom. Music by humming is part division of music information retrieval. In order to define what a music information retrieval system is first I need to define what it is. Berger and Lafferty (1999) define information retrieval as "someone doing a query to a retrieval system, a user begins with an information need. This need is an ideal document- perfect fit for the user, but almost certainly not present in the retrieval system's collection of documents. From this ideal document, the user selects a group of identifying terms. In the context of traditional IR, one could view this group of terms as akin to expanded query." Music Information Retrieval has its background in information systems, data mining, intelligent systems, library science, music history and music theory. Three rounds of surveys using question pro where completed. The study found that there were variances in knowledge, training and level of awareness of query by humming, music information retrieval systems. Those variance relationships where based on music specialty, level that they teach, and age of the respondents.

  • Database community focuses on the similar music retrieval systems for music database when a humming query is given. One of the approaches is converting the midi data to time series, building their indices and performing the similarity search on them. Queries based on humming can be transformed to time series by using the known pitch detection algorithms. The recently suggested algorithm, scaled and warped matching, is based on dynamic time warping and uniform scaling. This paper proposes Humming BIRD(Humming Based sImilaR mini music retrieval system) using sliding window and center-aligned scaled and warped matching. Center-aligned scaled and warped matching is a mixed distance measure of center-aligned uniform scaling and time warping. The newly proposed measure gives tighter lower bound than previous ones which results in reduced search space. The empirical results show the superiority of this algorithm comparing the pruning power while it returns the same results.

  • This paper describes a music information retrieval system which uses humming as the key for retrieval Humming is an easy way for the user to input a melody. However, there are several problems with humming that degrade the retrieval of information. One problem is a human factor. Sometimes people do not sing accurately, especially if they are inexperienced or unaccompanied. Another problem arises from signal processing. Therefore, a music information retrieval method should be sufficiently robust to surmount various humming errors and signal processing problems. A retrieval system has to extract pitch from the user's humming. However pitch extraction is not perfect. It often captures half or double pitches. even if the extraction algorithms take the continuity of the pitch into account. Considering these problems. we propose a system that takes multiple pitch candidates into account. In addition to the frequencies of the pitch candidates. the confidence measures obtained from their powers are taken into consideration as well. We also propose the use of an algorithm with three dimensions that is an extension of the conventional DP algorithm, so that multiple pitch candidates can be treated. Moreover in the proposed algorithm. DP paths are changed dynamically to take deltaPitches and IOIratios of input and reference notes into account in order to treat notes being split or unified. We carried out an evaluation experiment to compare the proposed system with a conventional system. From the experiment. the proposed method gave better retrieval performance than the conventional system.

  • A user remembers a melody as not the combination of pitch and duration which is written in score but the contour which is composed of the relative pitch and duration. Because of the way of remembering a melody the previous Music Information Retrieval Systems which uses keyboard Playing or score as the main input melody are not easily acceptable in Query By Humming Systems. In this paper, we mention about the considerable checkpoints for Query By Humming System and previous researches. And we propose the feature extraction which is similar with the way of remembering a melody and similarity computation algorithms between melody in humming and melody in music. The proposed similarity computation algorithms solves the problem which can be happened when only uses the relative pitches by using relative durations.

  • This paper proposes a matching engine for a query-by-singing/humming (QbSH) system with polyphonic music files like MP3 files. The pitch sequences extracted from polyphonic recordings may be distorted. So we use chroma-scale representation, pre-processing, compensation, and asymmetric dynamic time warping to reduce the influence of the distortions. From the experiment with 28 hour music DB, the performance of our QbSH system based on polyphonic database is very promising in comparison with the published QbSH system based on monophonic database. It shows 0.725 in MRR(Mean Reciprocal Rank). Our matching engine can be used for the QbSH system based on MIDI DB also and that performance was verified by MIREX 2011.

  • A shading ring in an AC solenoid plays an important role in reducing vibration and humming sound. Estimation of performance of the shading ring placed in a stator pole of the AC solenoid is not an easy task due to the difficulty in measurement of the current and flux linkage of the shading ring. In this paper, dynamic performance of an AC solenoid with a shading ring is analyzed through the simulation using electromagnetic analysis software and the results are verified by simple AC and DC voltage tests. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the shading ring in the AC solenoid not only increases pull force, but also reduces operation time, vibration and humming sound.

  • The aim of the paper is to analyze prosodic characteristics in apraxia of speech and establish the fundamental sources in diagnosis of motor speech disorders. The sentences consist of two different types (declarative and interrogative) with different numbers of constituents which are one to three. The stimuli were constructed to assess apraxics speech with articulation and humming skills. The features of speech patterns were examined such as utterance duration, boundary tones, and etc. The results of the analysis are as follow: 1) In the interrogative sentences, the rising boundary tones appeared only in the humming tasks 2) the utterance duration is relatively shorter in the humming tasks than the speech with articulation.
