  • Using an atom superposition and electron delocalization molecular orbital (ASED-MO) method, we have compared adsorption properties of adsorbates on the Pt(Ill) surface with the Pt(lll)/γ-Al203 surface in the ethylene hydrogenation reaction. In two-layer thick model systems, the calculated activation energy of the hydrogenation by the surface platinum hydride is equal to the energy by the hydride over supported platinum/γ-alumina. The transition structure on platinum is very close to the structure on the supported platinum/γ-alumina surface. Hydrogenation by the surface hydride on platinum can take place easily because the activation energy is about 0.5 eV less than hydrogenation by ethylidene. On supported platinum/,y-alumina the activation energy of the hydride mechanism is about 0.61 eV less than that of ethylidene mechanism. In one-layer thick model systems, the activation energy of hydrogenation by ethylidene is about 0.13 eV less than the activation energy of hydride reaction. The calculated activation energy by the hydride over the supported platinum y-alumina is 0. 24 eV higher than the platinum surface. We have found from this result that the catalytic properties of one-layer thick model systems have been influenced by the support but the two-layer thick model systems have not been influenced by the support.

  • Mg and Mg alloys are attractive hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and high absorption capacity. Their range of applications could be further extended if their hydrogenation properties and degradation behavior could be improved, The main emphasis of this study was to find an economic manufacturing method for Mg-Ti-Ni-H systems, and to investigate their hydrogenation properties, In order to examine hydrogenation behavior, a Sieverts type automatic pressure-composition-isotherm(PCI) apparatus was used and the experiments were performed at 423, 473, 523, 573, 623 and 673K. The results of thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) reveal that the absorbed hydrogen contents are around 2.5 wt% for ($Mg_9Ti_1$)-10 wt% Ni. With increased Ni content, the absorbed hydrogen content decreases to 1.7 wt%, whereas the dehydriding starting temperatures are lowered by some 70-100K. The results of PCI on ($Mg_9Ti_1$)-20 wt% Ni show that its hydrogen capacity is around 5.3 wt% and its reversible capacity and plateau pressure are also excellent at 523K and 573K. In addition, the reaction enthalpy, $\Delta$HD.plateau, is $30.6{\pm}5.7kJ/molH_2$.

  • $TiO_2$-particles containing Co grains are fabricated via thermal hydrogenation and selective oxidation of TiCo alloy. For comparison, $TiO_2$-Co composite powders are prepared by two kinds of methods which were the mechanical carbonization and oxidation process, and the conventional mixing process. The microstructural characteristics of the prepared composites are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scattering electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the composite powders are sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ by spark plasma sintering. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization are found to be higher than those of the samples prepared by the conventional mixing process. Moreover, the microstructures of sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization processes are found to be similar. The difference in the mechanical properties of sintered samples prepared by thermal hydrogenation and mechanical carbonization processes is attributed to the different sizes of metallic Co particles in the samples.

  • It is possible that hydrogen could replace coal and petroleum as the predominant energy source in the near future, but several challenges including cost, efficiency, and stability. Mg and Mg alloys are attractive hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and high absorption capacity. Their range of applications could be further extended if their hydrogenation properties could be improved. The main emphasis of this study was to investigate their hydrogenation properties for Synthesis of 10wt.% CaF2 in Mg2NiHx systems. The effect of BCR (66:1) and MA time (96 hours) on the hydrogenation properties of the composite was investigated. also, Mg2NiHx-10wt% CaF2 composites prepared by Mechanical Alloying are used in this work to illustrate the effect of catalysts on activation energy and kinetics of Magnesium hydride.

  • We demonstrated an effective way of preparing melt spinnable mesophase pitches via catalytic hydrogenation of petroleum residue (fluidized catalytic cracking-decant oil) and their subsequent thermal soaking. The mesophase pitches thus obtained were analyzed in terms of their viscosity, elemental composition, solubility, molecular weight, softening point and optical texture. We found that zeolite-induced catalytic hydrogenation under high hydrogen pressure contributed to a large variation in the properties of the pitches. As the hydrogen pressure increased, the C/H ratio decreased, and the solubility in n-hexane increased. The mesophase pitch with entirely anisotropic domains of flow texture exhibited good meltspinnability. The mesophase carbon fibers obtained from the catalytically hydrogenated petroleum residue showed moderate mechanical properties.

  • Catalytic properties of Ni-Zr$O_2$ catalysts prepared by coprecipitation have been studied for the gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes. The coprecipitation method led to the solid solution of Ni-Zr$O_2$, which contains highly resistant Ni species to thermal reduction with H2. Nickel species of the solid solution were highly dispersed in the ZrO2 lattice, so that the reduced catalysts were selective for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes (99.9%) even in the presence of 1-butene.

  • Mesoporous carbon-silica composites supported Pt nanoparticle catalysts (Pt/MCS) were firstly applied to the heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyrate (EOPB). A series of different silica contents were investigated in the fabrication of this mesoporous material. When the volume of added tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) during the preparation of composites is 8 mL, Pt/MCS-8 holds carbon and silica as the main components and possesses relatively strong acidity, mesoporous structures with micropores, appropriate Pt nanoparticle size and high dispersibility showing by XRD, XPS, TPD, $N_2$ sorption and TEM. These properties cause its good catalytic performance in the heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of EOPB with the enantiomeric excess value and conversion up to 85.6% and 97.8%, respectively.

  • Doping or incorporation with exotic elements are two manners to regulate the optoelectronic properties of transparent conducting (TCO) cadmium oxide (CdO). Nevertheless, the method of doping host CdO by CdTe semiconductor is of high importance. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of CdTe-doped CdO films are studied for the sake of promoting their conducting parameters (CPs), including their conductivity, carrier concentration, and carrier mobility, along with transparency in the NIR spectral region; these are then compared with the influence of doping the host CdO by pure Te ions. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical absorption spectroscopy, and electrical measurements are used to characterise the deposited films prepared by thermal evaporation. Numerous results are presented and discussed in this work; among these results, the optical properties are studied through a merging of concurrent BGN (redshift) and BGW (blue shift) effects as a consequence of doping processes. The impact of hydrogenation on the characterisations of the prepared films is investigated; it has no qualitative effect on the crystalline structure. However, it is found that TCO-CPs are improved by the process of CdTe doping followed by hydrogenation. The utmost TCO-CP improvements are found with host CdO film including ~ 1 %Te, in which the resistivity decreases by ~ 750 %, carrier concentration increases by 355 %, and mobility increases by ~ 90 % due to the increase of Ncarr. The improvement of TCO-CPs by hydrogenation is attributed to the creation of O-vacancies because of H2 molecule dissociation in the presence of Te ions. These results reflect the potential of using semiconductor CdTe -doped CdO thin films in TCO applications. Nevertheless, improvements of the host CdO CPs with CdTe dopant are of a lesser degree compared with the case of doping the host CdO with pure Te ions.

  • In this paper, we report the changes of morphology, transmittance and photoluminescence (PL) in hydrogenated amorphous $As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin films, thermally deposited at the vapor incidence angles (${\theta}$) of $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;80^{\circ}$. The hydrogenation was carried out under the condition of a $H_2$ pressure ($P_H$) of 20 atm and an annealing temperature range, $T_{Anneal}$ of $150^{\circ}C{\sim}210^{\circ}C$. A columnar structures with an inclination angle of approximately $65{\sim}70^{\circ}$ was formed in $80^{\circ}$-deposited films and then the columnar was broken after hydrogenation. Transmittance increases with an increase of deposition angle and by the hydrogenation. In particular, a broad PL band on the extended region is observed in obliquely deposited films and it increases during the hydrogenation.

  • The HDDR(hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination) process can be used as an effective way of converting no coercivity Nd-Fe-B material, with a coarse $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grain structure to a highly coercive one with a fine grain. Careful control of the HDDR process can lead to an anisotropic $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ without any post aligning process. In this study, the effect of hydrogen gas input at various temperature in range of $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ of hydrogenation stage (named Modified-solid HDDR, MS-HDDR) on the magnetic properties has been investigated. The powder from the modified-solid HDDR process exhibits Br of 11.7 kG and iHc of 10.7 kOe, which are superior to those of the powder prepared using the normal HDDR process.
