  • The paper surveys various analytical models for IEEE 802.11 medium access control protocols and critically discusses recent issues developing in wireless mobile ad hoc networks and their MACs. The surveyed MAC protocols include the standard IEEE 802.11 MAC suites such as IEEE 802.11 DCF, IEEE 802.11 PCF, IEEE 802.11e EDCA, and IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode; and also the newer, de facto MAC protocols. We study the analytic models of the standard MAC suites followed by the newer analytic models that have been published in recent years. Also, the paper tries to include most of current literatures discussing analytic modeling of MAC in conjunction to some critical issues such as contention among ad hoc nodes, hidden terminal problems, and real-time service support.

  • As the current IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard provides the unified channel access procedure for each traffic service without considering its own traffic characteristics, it is difficult to get its differentiated service qualities at IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN system. To solve this limit, IEEE 802.11e standard that can provide differentiated service to each traffic is under preparation. In this study, we implemented IEEE 802.11e EDCA channel access scheme with NS-2 simulator, and showed its numerical results in various system environments with using average delay and throughput as performance measures.

  • To realize the self-driving technology, there have been various system designs based on the related V2X standards, especially the IEEE 802.11p and WAVE standard supporting the WLAN V2X communication. On the other hand, the new standard IEEE 802.11ba defining supplementary wake-up radio operation is now under standardization targeting the low power operation, and it includes the V2P operation in use cases. However, if IEEE 802.11ba is used with the IEEE 802.11ba for V2X operation, the additional transmission procedure of wake-up frame in IEEE 802.11ba may cause the congestion problem and fails to meet the delay requirement. In this paper, the system structure of the combination of IEEE 802.11ba with the 802.11p is studied. In addition, based on the analysis and simulation, the considerations and improvements for effective low-power V2P communication in future self-driving technology using IEEE 802.11ba are proposed.

  • Current IEEE 802.11 standard is very vulnerable that between the AP and STA authentication and security mechanisms is widely known. Therefore, IEEE has proposed security architecture RSN (Robust Security Network) for 802.11. RSN is used the access control, authentication, and key management based on the IEEE 802.1X standard. In this paper, IEEE 802.1X or 802.11 a combination of several models proposed for the vulnerability, and session hijacking or MiM (Man-in the-Middle) attacks to respond, the authentication mechanism Was designed to the access control between the STA and the AP.

  • Recently, there is an increase in demand of real-time multimedia service in the WLAN environment, with a commercialization of IEEE 802.11n standard. However, the 802.1x authentication protocol is too slow to provide seamless real-time multimedia service, which defined in an IEEE 802.11i security standard. In this paper, a Ticket-based authentication mechanism in the CAPWAP(Control And Provisioning Wireless Access Point) architecture is introduced to support for the fast handoff.

  • The IEEE 802.11 based wireless local area networks are candidates to lead the broadband connectivity in the home and office scenarios. Recently IEEE proposed the 802.11e as a new standard to provide appropriate Quality of Services to a plethora of emerging real-time multimedia and high demanding applications such as high definition movie and audio distribution, video-conference and voice over IP. This paper studies the IEEE 802.11e/IEEE 802.11b interactions focusing on potential unfairness problems that might appear in networks with heterogeneous wireless LAN technologies as well as in the IEEE 802.11e deployment phase.

  • Wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standard are widely spread for use nowadays. Traffic which are conveyed over the WLANs change rapidly from normal data such a Email and Web pages, to multimedia data of high resolution video and voice. To meet QoS (Quality of Service) required by these multimedia traffic, the IEEE 802 committee recently has developed a new standard, IEEE 802.11e. IEEe 802.11.e contains two MAC mechanisms for providing QoS: EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) and HCCA (HCF Controlled Channel Access). Using these standardized MAC mechanisms as a building platform, various admission control mechanisms can be combined to offer QoS gurantees for multimedia traffic. This paper surveys these research efforts.

  • The DCF of IEEE 802.11 standard coordinates transmissions onto the shared communication channel based on CSMA/CA protocol. Currently, 802,11 is the most widely deployed wireless LAN standard. In this paper, for 802.11-based wireless LAN we propose a service differentiation scheme adopting different contention window sizes and retransmission schemes for two different types of data packets and we present a Markov model for the state of a given station under a finite load traffic condition. We then derive an algorithm to find the transmission probability and the throughput. The proposed model is validated through simulation under various system settings.

  • Handover in IEEE 802.11 requires repeated authentication and key exchange procedures, which are an obstacle to seamless services of wireless LAM. We propose a fast authentication and key exchange mechanism using IEEE 802.11f. Especially, by proposing a modified version of the 4-way handshake of IEEE 802.11i, we solve the perfect forward secrecy problem that arises when the pre-authentication is adopted. The scheme can be implemented only using the Context Block of IEEE 802.11f and the 4-way handshake of IEEE 802.11i without involving authentications server's interaction or non-standard behavior between access points. Our scheme is applicable to devices not supporting the us-authentication of IEEE 802.11i and also, it can substitute the pre-authentication when the pre-authentication is failed.

To meet QoS (Quality of Service) required by these multimedia traffic, the IEEE 802 committee recently has developed a new standard, IEEE 802.11e. Current IEEE 802.11e, however, is not sufficient to support service differentiations and network performance enhancements, under a varying network environment experiencing as varying channel characteristics and high network loads. Recently, there have been much research to complement this deficiency of 802.11e standard. This paper surveys these research efforts.
