  • A method for representing detailed design information of steel bridge member is proposed on the basis of the IFC model. As a first step, bridge related entities in the IFC-BRIDGE V2 and their functions are analyzed. In addition, design documents of steel bridge members are analyzed to extract information items that are not handled in the IFC-BRIDGE V2. It is recommended that several entities in the IFC-BRIDGE V2, such as ifcBridgeFibre, IfcBridgeReferenceLine, and IfcBridgeSection, should be properly relocated. In addition, IfcBridgeStiffener, IfcBridgeJointSystem, IfcBridgeDiaphragm, and IfcBridgeShearConnector are added as subtypes of IfcBridgeElementComponent for representing the stiffener, joint system, diaphragm, and shear connector, respectively. The added new entities inherit all attributes of IfcProduct which is linked with other resources: geometric representation, placement, material information, and so on. Thus, it is considered that a proposed in-depth IFC-BRIDGE model can be used more widely.

  • An IFC file is dependent on the IFC schema. Because of this relationship, most IFC-using software reads and interprets the IFC File by employing an early binding method, which uses a standard IFC schema. In the case of most open sources, early binding methods using standard IFC schema have a problem that they cannot express extra information of IFC File out of extended IFC schema. Also, in the case of previous studies, they suggested schema extension, such as adding attribute information to the schema, rather than the interpretation of IFC File. This study research on method of extracting shape and attribute information was conducted by analyzing the IFC File produced through the Port schema, which is an extended IFC schema. Three objects were created using the reference relationship between the Port schema definition and the IFC entity, and, at the end, the three objects were combined into one object. It has been confirmed that the shape and property data were express properly while delivering the combined object to the viewer. The process is possible because of the method of matching IFC schema and IFC File, which is dependent on IFC schema but not early binding method. However, this method has some drawbacks, such that contemporaneously generated many objects consume many memory spaces. Future research to investigate that issue further is needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the method to develop IFC interface module with less time and effort, which can support the IFC-based data exchange of building structures. The core of the IFC interface module is that 1) the physical and conceptual objects well suited to the knowledge and experience of the building structures are exploited and 2) no in-depth knowledge about IFC is required. The proposed method is to 1) divide the IFC interface module into public part open to the external applications and the supporting private part, 2) reorganize the IFC entities related to the building structures into the public part, and 3) reorganize the other IFC entities into the private part. In this study, the IFC interface module was developed and then verified by the application of the module to visualization, member listing, quantity take-off and interface to Tekla of an IFC file.

  • As the application of BIM (Building Information Modeling) to the civil sector has become practical, and mandatory for road projects, the standardization, development of systems, etc. for the application and operation of BIM are required. In particular, it is important to develop BIM data standards for producing, sharing and managing the lifecycle data of civil facilities because they are commonly national public facilities. The BIM data standards have been developed by utilizing or extending IFC (Industry Foundation Classes), which is an international standard, but schema extensions of river facilities has not been developed thus far. This study proposes an approach to an IFC extension for river facilities using the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) as a fundamental study for IFC-based schema extension in the river field. For this purpose, the research was carried out as follows. First, the IFC extension development method was selected to represent the river facilities by analyzing the existing IFC structure and previous research cases for the IFC extension. Second, extended elements of the river facilities were identified through an analysis of the WBS and classified according to the high-level structure of the IFC schema. Third, the classified elements were arranged based on the IFC hierarchy and the IFC schema extension for river facilities was established. Based on the suggested extension method of IFC schema, this study developed the schema by defining the element components and parts of river facilities, such as distribution flow elements and deriving their detailed types and properties.

  • IFC converters and viewers, applicable in the construction field, are being actively developed while, in the civil engineering field, IFC schemata are being developed. To prove the IFC schema grammatically, the existing ISO 10303 30s' pre-processors and post-processors may be used. However, to visually prove the IFC model, the existing commercial 3D modeling software should be converted into the IFC schema of civil engineering field, and a viewer is needed to view it. Thus, this study developed a IFC converter and viewer prototype system to apply BIM in the road field. To express the road line, LandXML was analyzed, and IFC suitable for expressing shapes in the road field was designed. Also, an IFC suitable for bridges with focus on representative bridge structures such as abuts, piers and decks was designed. Further, a converter was developed using AutoCAD's Civil3D and Revit's 3rdp party tools, and software was also developed designed to combine each converted IFC model into one IFC. In addition, a viewer designed to view IFC in the road field was developed to prove the converted IFC. Eight major verification and examination items were selected and used in testing the converted model, and it was confirmed that the viewer normally viewed the IFC schema in the road field. The proposed IFC converter is expected to be used as a visual IFC verification tool in the road field.

  • An IFC Server is a database management system that stores data complying with a standard data format, called IFC, and keeps track of data transactions, modifications, and deletions. It plays a role as an information hub for storing and sharing information between various parties involved in construction projects. There have been several efforts to develop an IFC Server, however, they suffered from slow performance and long transaction time due to a complex mapping process between IFC files and relational database structures. In this study, we aim to develop an IFC Server using an object-relational database system. Since IFC has an object-flavored data structure, we expect to have a simpler and faster mapping process from IFC to the IFC Server. This paper reviews existing studies and describes the overall framework of the OR-IFC Server.

  • Industry Foundation Classes(IFC) is the core product schema for ensuring the interoperability of information in Building Information Modeling(BIM) environment. However, since current IFC is mainly focused on building structure. there are limitations in the generation of functional information of components when applied to civil infrastructures. Previous studies have proposed IFC-based new entities for the civil infrastructures, it takes long time to support them in BIM authoring software packages. In this study, we proposed practical rules to apply IFC-based information modeling using BIM authoring software and additional new entities for the civil infrastructure through attributes and information mapping. The availabilities of proposed method were examined using the rail and sleeper information models based on an extended IFC data schema for the railway infrastructures.
