In this paper present Autonomous Adaptive Digital Over Current Relay for distribution networks which acts autonomous setting using the short circuit impedance measured by relay of power systems. Automation of relay setting is one of the basic requirements for distribution automation, although manual relay setting is used at present. The short circuit impedance from a power source in distribution networks essential for the Autonomous Relay Setting changes frequently in distribution networks. In this paper the short circuit impedance is calculated with voltage and current measured in real time operation of digital relay using the Recursive Least Squares. A new method of digital relay setting is introduced using the the short circuit impedance and load current.
In this paper, knowledge-based approach using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used for estimating the coordinated zonal settings of a distance relay. The approach depends on the detailed simulation studies of apparent impedance loci as seen by distance relay during disturbance, considering various operating conditions including fault resistance. In a distance relay, the impedance loci given at the relay location is obtained from extensive transient stability studies. SVMs are used as a pattern classifier for obtaining distance relay co-ordination. The scheme utilizes the apparent impedance values observed during a fault as inputs. An improved performance with the use of SVMs, keeping the reach when faced with different fault conditions as well as system power flow changes, are illustrated with an equivalent 265 bus system of a practical Indian Western Grid.

Distance relay identifies the type and location of fault by measuring the transmission line impedance. However any other factors that cause miss calculating the measured impedance, makes the relay detect the fault in incorrect location or do not detect the fault at all. One of the important factors which directly changes the measured impedance by the relay is series capacitive compensation (SCC). Another factor that changes the calculated impedance by distance relay is fault resistance. This paper provides a method based on the combination of distance and differential protection. At first, faulty transmission line is detected according to the current data of buses. After that the fault location is calculated using the proposed algorithm on the transmission line. This algorithm is based on active power calculation of the buses. Fault resistance is calculated from the active powers and its effect will be deducted from calculated impedance by the algorithm. This method measures the voltage across SCC by phasor measurement units (PMUs) and transmits them to the relay location via communication channels. The transmitted signals are utilized to modify the voltage signal which is measured by the relay. Different operating modes of SCC and as well as different faults such as phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground faults are examined by simulations.

Distance realy is tripped by the line impedance calculated at the relay point. Accordingly the accurate operation depends on the precise calculation of line impedance. Impedance can be accurately calculated in case of overhead line. However, in case of power cables or combined transmission lines, impedance can not be accurately calculated because cable systems have the sheath, grounding resistance, and sheath voltage limiters(SVLs). There are also several grounding systems in cable systems. Therefore, if there is a fault in cable systems, these terms will severely be caused much error to calculation of impedance. Accordingly the proper compensation should be developed for the correct operation of the distance relay. This paper presents the distance calculating algorithm in combined transmission line with power cable using wavelet transform. In order to achieve such purpose, judgement method to discriminate the fault section in both sections was proposed using D1 coefficient summation in db4. And also, error compensation value was proposed for correct calculation of impedance in power cables section.
This paper analyzed catenary impedance characteristics of relays installed in substation and sectioning post to protect power feeding circuit in the extended power feeding conditions. For this, we modelled AT feeding system using PSCAD/EMTDC and calculated catenary impedance. The relay installed in substation calculated catenary impedance of the extended power feeding area adding catenary impedance of self protection zone. But, the relay installed in sectioning post calculated catenary impedance of the only protection area. Therefore, we confirmed that the more reliable protection way can be utilized using the relay installed in sectioning post.

Power system has recently used Double-circuit Line and Multi-circuit Line in the industrial development. This has an advantage of system stability and reliability, but the complexity of the system has a disadvantage that makes it difficult to protect the power line. Double-circuit Line has two operation conditions in the Single-circuit operation and Double-circuit operation, so it has mutual impedance. To make it possible for the remaining single-line to operate independently while there is a fault with first line or when maintenance is needed, a trip region for the single-circuit operation should be set in order to set the relay trip region. An optimal trip region for each operation, a different operational conditions for the relay setting should be calculated. In this paper, trip regions of each operation condition have been compared by considering mutual impedance and fault resistance that led to the calculation of fault impedance. Also, as we know that one of the advantages in the distance relay is the back-up protection, we calculated the trip region(Zone-2) in consideration of the mutual impedance.

This paper presents the reach accuracy of a distance relay for protection of transmission line according to power system conditions. The apparent impedance of distance relay is considerably affected by source impedance, load current, power factor, fault point and resistance etc. For protective coordination on the variables power system parameters, trip characteristics of distance relay at sending and receiving terminal are discussed.

This paper presents a method for modelling of the impedance locus in order to test the protective relay with dynamic. This paper has the two parts, the first part is the configuration of impedance locus with voltage magnitude, total impedance magnitude and angle. And the second part is the control of the locus speed with deviation of two frequencies. The proposed method is applied to two machine equivalent system with PSCAD/EMTDC to show its effectiveness.

Previous research results indicated that the designed current reduction device could effectively reduce the sheath circulating current and that its RDP protection device could shield it against both fault and lightning strokes. In this paper, cable impedance is analyzed using wavelet analysis and distance relay algorithm following the installation of these devices so that the operation of distance relay can be estimated. The test results confirm that in these devices, the fault inception angle and SVL bonding types have no impact on the change of cable impedance. In other words, the conventional distance relay can be used without a new relay setting. Thus we can finally assert that the designed current reduction device and its protection device are effective and can be safely installed on the cable transmission system without disturbance.
