  • Traditional international trade theory assumes that import goods and domestically produced goods of the same industry are equal in quality. However the substitutability of the two goods is imperfect. This article estimated the import functions of pulp and paper using econometric and vector autoregressive models, and calculated the elasticities of substitution between imported and domestically produced pulp and paper. The import of pulp is inelastic to import price and domestic price, and elastic to national income in econometric model. And it is inelastic to import price, domestic price and national income in vector autoregressive model. On the other hand, the import of paper is inelastic to domestic price, and elastic to import price and national income in econometric model. And it is inelastic to import price and domestic price, and elastic to national income in vector autoregressive model. The elasticity of substitution between imported and domestically produced pulp was positive, and the elasticity was respectively 0.42 and 0.20 in econometric and vector autoregressive models. This may be because of the high proportion of imports. On the other hand, the elasticity of substitution between imported and domestically produced paper was positive, and the elasticity was respectively 0.75 and 0.81 in econometric and vector autoregressive models. This may be because the quality of imported paper is different from that of domestically produced paper.

  • Yellow poplar grown in Korea and imported eucalyptus were compared their kraft pulping characteristics and evaluated the replacing possibility of eucalyptus by yellow poplar. Difference between yellow poplar and eucalyptus were investigated in chemical composition and fiber morphology. Yellow poplar kraft pulp resulted in the higher yield, longer fiber length and thicker fiber, and higher pulp strength than that of eucalyptus. More xylan survived in eucalyptus than yellow poplar during kraft pulping, which led to similar pulp yield even though polysaccharides in Eucalyptus was 4.5% less than in yellow poplar. Longer and thicker yellow poplar pulp fiber resulted in better beating response and pulp strength properties.

  • Pulping properties of the imported mixed eucalyptus chips and the domestic yellow poplar chips were investigated for comparing two chips as the raw materials for the hardwood chemical pulp. Soda-AQ (anthraquinone) pulping was applied for this study. The pulp from yellow poplar showed higher pulp yield than pulp from mixed eucalyptus, which comes from the lower hot-water soluble extractives and the higher polysaccharides in yellow poplar chips than those of the mixed eucalyptus chips. The yellow poplar pulp had higher average fiber length and fiber width than those of the mixed eucalyptus pulp, which led to the better respond to beating and the higher tear strength than those of the pulp from the mixed eucalyptus chips.

  • In order to improve the printability for offset print in Korea, the experimental printing was performed with commercial press. The clue of this study is that the printing condition of the imported machines are not set properly for the Korean printing materials. Although almost all of the printing machines are imported, printing materials have to be supplied in Korea. So we need to study on the printability between Korean materials and imported machines. In spite of difficulties in experiments with commercial press, three newsprint machines and three commercial printing presses were used for this study over 5 years. As the results, the optimum range and printability coefficients were obtained.

  • Tissue and paper manufacturing companies have common problems with increasing cost of imported virgin pulp and the restriction of using woods in the forest. Possibility of using bagasse pulp for solving those problems was studied. In order to reduce the production cost and study the dependency on pulps, bagasse pulp has been studied for mixing with Sw-BKP and Hw-BKP. Optimum blending ratio of wood pulps and bagasse pulp to enhance tissue properties were analyzed. Various properties of the hand sheet after blending of wood pulp and bagasse pulp were measured. As results, the bagasse pulp could substitute the hard wood pulp with similar properties of tissue. Therefore, we judged that the bagasse pulp was suitable for replacement of the hardwood pulp.

  • This study was carried out to develop the automation bark peeling process of paper mulberry for making Hanji. Nowadays, almost raw material has been imported from south-east asia for making Hanji. Raw material dependence is very high for Hanji-making by low productivity in korea. This study is focused on the resolution for problem of bark peeling automation. Water and sand jet of compressed air was possible bark peeling for black bast fiber. The effect of removing black bast fiber increased the longer the steaming time. Also using drum of bark peeling showed that results under temperature $80^{\circ}C$ and Rpm 50/min were best bark peeling and separating bast fiber from stem. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, ethanol-benzene extractives, and ash were 91.63~95.55%, 1.4~2.0%, 1.12~1.65%, and 1.4~4.3%, respectively. Chemical characteristics are similar between imported raw-material with drum bark.

  • A series of studies on nitric-acid pulping of municipal recycled waste papers were carried out to substitute the bleached chemical pulp imported for producing printing paper as well as to use its solidified spent-liquor as fertilizer. The first experiment was carried out to find the optimum treatment conditions such as pulp consistency, nitric acid charge and temperature in $HNO_3$-alkali pulping process. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Some selective delignification of OCC pulp was conducted by $HNO_3$-alkali process. The higher the temperature and concentration of nitric acid, the lower the pulp yield and kappa number of treated pulp. while its brightness was increased. 2. The higher consistency required the stronger mixing in case of more than 5% pulp. 3. In the laboratory, the suitable $HNO_3$-treating condition seemed to be less than 6% consistency, lower than 500% $HNO_3$charge on pulp and lower than $100^{\circ}C$ in cooking temperature. 4. The spent liquor with 1.77% N-content seemed to be slow-release nitrogen fertilizer suitable for agriculture.

  • This study was performed to investigate the deinkability of Korean old newspaper(KONP) and the properties of newsprint made from deinked pulp with some addition of virgin pulp. When the samples of composed of 50% Australian old magazine(AuOMG) and 50% KONP were compared with the samples 50% AuOMG and 50% AuONP, the yield, opacity, strength properties of the former were high, but its brightness was low. When the mixing ratio of AuOMG : AuONP : KONP was 30:20:50, the brightness and strength properties were obtained the similar or better than those obtained samples having other mixing ratio. The brightness and opacity of samples made from deinked pulp with the some addition of TMP and BKP can meet the minium qualifications of brightness and opacity specified by Japanese Industrial Standard. The samples, which DIP, TMP, and KP were mixed with the ratio of the 85:10:5 and 90:5:5, maintained higher brightness and strength comparing to the samples containing higher amount of virgin pulp. Since the newsprint samples made from KONP was not inferior to those from imported old newspaper, the more use of KONP in producing newsprint is recommended.

  • Recently, much of forest biomass has been obtained from the national forest management operation. Unfortunately, Korean Forest Services has a plan to use this forest biomass as energy fuels for wood pellets. Considering unhappy situation that about 80% of wood pulps has been imported, it is regarded as unwise decision. If forest biomass can be used to make pulps or other valuable woody products, we are able to double its economic value than the raw materials for wood pellets. In this study, we explored alternative raw materials for wood biomass used to make wood pellets. For this, fresh technology such as torrefaction was applied with the other lignocellulosic biomass.

  • The document archives like official documents, books, maps and historic paper artifacts are primarily based on the organic cellulosic materials. As the passage of time, these organic cellulosic materials are slowly deteriorated by various aging factors, like light, polluted air and biological fungi. Many researchers have been carried out the examination method of deteriorating origins, the mechanism of aging hysteresis, and the preserving method of archival materials. One of the most simple and easiest ways for conservation of organic archival documents is the proper storage under environmental control. Corrugated board for archival quality container has been developed and already used in advanced country, like Japan, USA, German, UK and Europe. In case of Korea, corrugated board for archival quality container has been used a decade ago, but totally imported. This study was tried to develop the corrugated board for archival quality container. Liner and corrugated medium were specially produced and finally manufactured to E flute corrugated board. The physical and strength properties of permanent base paper and corrugated board were evaluated, and compared with imported corrugated board. 4 kinds of corrugating adhesives were considered various in order to investigate optimum adhesive for flute development between liner and corrugating medium, and evaluate adhesion strength under conditions of storage and curing temperatures.
