  • The process of squeeze casting for metal matrix composites (MMCs) has been simulated numerically by using finite difference method. The governing equations to describe fluid flow through porous medium and heat transfer are applied to two dimensional model which is similar to a real system. A computational code has been developed to solve this problem. The influence on infiltration kinetics and solidification time of several parameters is investigated. Cooling curves and temperature distribution with time and position is also shown. The result can be used to design the squeeze casting for MMCs.

  • A rare case is described of an intrathyroidal branchial cleft-like cyst in neonate. The patient was a newborn girl with a mass in the left lateral neck. The ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a cystic lesion in the left thyroid. The lesion was enucleated surgically from the thyroid. Histologically, the cyst was lined by squamous or columnar epithelium and contained inflammatory cell infiltraion, thyroid and parathyroid tissue. The patient has been doing well without any evidence of thyroid dysfunction for 15 months.

  • Tuberculosis infection is wide spread disease and makes troublesome complications in some cases. A 50 - year old male visited Andong Hospital with coughing and sputum, dyspnea on exertion, bulging left anterior chest wall mass. Chest X-ray showed right pleural effusion, both side streaky infiltraion, and pleural thickness in apex. Chest CT scan showed bone destruction of left clavicle head, manubrium and large abscess pocket in pectoralis muscle. In May 1996 he underwent en bloc resection of left upper anterior chest wall including pectoralis major and minor muscle, left clavicle head, manubrium and covering infected skin, then contralateral pectoralis major muscle flap and skin graft was done. Patient shows no evidence of recurrence during follow up.

  • In this study unit hydrograph and infiltration capacity curves have been determined based on rainfall-runoff data for the upper Ansung stream basin. Infiltration capacity curve also has been computed based on measurements of accumulated infiltration. Accumulated infiltration curve which has close relationship with unit hydrograph has been found in adopting the following two approach methods. In the first method the mean infiltration capacity with infiltration index method and the Kostiakov accumulation infiltration curves have been computed based on hydrological data for the GongDo gauging station of the upper Ansung stream basin. In the second method the accumulation curve has been determined through directly observed infiltration data for four points in the upper basin and has been compared with the infiltration capacity curves by three observed rainfall-runoff event.

  • This study is about penetrability of Micro Cement(MC) used for ground improvement. In this study, the characteristics of chemical grouting such as solidification, penetrability were analyzed experimentally by changing permeability of ground, grain size and relative density of grout material. For evaluating applicability of grout material, solidification test and penetrability test were performed. From the results of the tests, effective solidification ratio and penetrability ratio of MC was each 75%, 86% to be excellent when ground permeability was in the range of 10$^{-2}$ and 10$^{-4}$ cm/sec. Otherwise, those of Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) were both lower than 50% to be poor. When penetrability of grout material is needed for improvement of dam foundation and soft ground, application of MC Is much superior to that of the other materials. The results of the grouting tests in the water flowing ground show that solidification effect of long gel-time grout material is excellent as injection pressure increases when groundwater velocity is relatively low. But when groundwater velocity is relatively high, solidification effect of long gel-time grout material is very poor because most grout materials are outflowed. Therefore, as groundwater velocity is high, effective solidification ratio of long gel-time grout material is better than that of short gel-time grout material, also penetration distance of long gel-time grout material is longer than that of short gel-time grout material.

  • In this study, the changes of the streamflow characteristics of the watershed were analysed depending on the infiltration methods of CAT. The study area, Boryeong-dam watershed located in Chungcheongnam-do area, has been suffered from severe drought in recent years and stabilized regarding on the storage rate through efforts such as constructing a channel connecting the upstream of Boryeong-dam from the downstream of the Geum river. In this study, the effects of soil infiltration parameters on the watershed streamflow characteristics were analyzed by the infiltration methods of CAT such as Rainfall Excess, Green&Ampt and Horton. And the parameter calibrations were conducted by SCEUA-P, a global optimization technique module of the PEST, the package for parameter optimization and uncertainty analysis, to compare the yearly variations of soil parameters for infiltration methods of CAT. In addition, the streamflow characteristics were analyzed for three infiltration methods by applying three different scenarios, such as applying calibrated parameters for every years to simulate the model for each years, applying calibrated parameters for the entire period to simulate the model for entire period, and applying the average value of yearly calibrated parameters to simulate the model for entire period.
