  • Relativization is one of the common syntactic operations to merge two different clauses into a single information unit. This operation plays a pivotal role to structuralize multiple clauses cohesively as well as serves to specify the property an individual has within the context. That implies that relativization contributes to information structure of multiclausal sentences. In this context, this paper delves into information structure of relative clauses in English with an eye toward creation of a computational model from a standpoint of machine translation. The current work employs Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG, Pollard and Sag (1994)) as a theory of grammar and Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS, Copestake et al. (2005) as a meaning representation system. Building upon these formalisms, this paper addresses how information structure of relative clauses can be represented and constrained. The current work makes use of Individual CONStraints (ICONS) for modeling relative clauses with respect to information structure. The current work also investigates which relative clause involves which information structure constraint. The present study argues that non-restrictive relative clauses impose a more specific constraint on information structure than restrictive relative clauses.

  • Construction industry is an aggregate of information that diverse information is integrated and controlled. To implement successful construction projects, it can be said that the information management is very important. In particular, because information of construction sites is controlled in a form of documents, importance of the document management in construction has been increased. But, by controlling information through documents, there are difficult problems in writing and classification of the documents and preservation and utilization of the information. Also, due to incompletion of the information management system, difficulty in systematic info management arises. For this reason, this study intends to suggest the document information breakdown structure for controlling document info efficiently which is generated at construction sites. For this, through the examination of preceding studies, establishment of the concept of the document info breakdown structure, the space breakdown structure, and the info breakdown structure, availability of document information is intended to heighten.

  • This paper investigates any possible correlation between the information structure and the occurrence of clause internal pauses in the spontaneous discourse. One of the possible functions of pause is its capacity to signal the information structure of the discourse. However, this aspect was not much explored in Korean spontaneous speech. In the present study, information structure of spontaneous speech was defined for each word or word group on the basis of the information structure analysis model proposed by Van Donzel (1999) and Roulet (1991, 1997). Thus, at a local level (words or word groups) of discourse structure, a distinction was made between three types of information, new, given and inferable. The results showed that clause internal pauses tend to appear more frequently before new information than other types of information. However compared to the total number of words or word groups it was not noticed any specific ordering concerning different kind of information status and pausing. It was however found that clause internal pauses did not appear randomly. The majority of them occurred at the initial part of the clause or the sentence. This tendency was mostly related to the division of sentence (or clause) into topic and comment. Thus, the role of pauses as a marker of information structure seems to be less effective in spontaneous discourse.

  • Information semantics is a well-known issue in areas of information systems researches. It describes what data mean, how they are created, where they can be applied to ; thus, it provides indispensable information for management of data. This article proposes to formalize information semantics by the processes that data are created or transformed. A scheme is proposed to describe an information production structure, which is called an information structure graph. An information structure graph is a directed graph, whose leaves are primary input data objects and whose root and internal nodes are output objects. Information semantics is derived from an information structure graph that has data as its root. For this, rules are proposed to manipulate and compare graphs. The structural relationships among information structure graphs are mapped into semantic relationships among data.

  • XML documents consist of elements that are basic units of information. When the structure of XML documents is changed dynamically, we need to update structure information efficiently without changing the information of the index structure for fast retrieval. In this paper, we propose a dynamic indexing model scheme that updates the index structure in real time as the structure of XML documents is changed by insertion and deletion of elements. Our dynamic indexing model consists of a structure information representation method and a dynamic index structure. The structure information representation method supports various types of structure retrievals. Our dynamic index structure processes various structural queries efficiently. We show through various experiments that our method outperforms existing ones in processing various types of queries such as content based queries, structural queries and hybrid queries.

  • Radiation technology is the one for developing new products or processes by applying radiation or for creating new functions in industry, research and medical fields, and its application is increasing consistently. For securing an advanced technology competitiveness, it is required to create a new added value by information consumer through providing an efficient system for supporting information, which is the infrastructure for research and development, contributed to its collection, analysis and use with a rapidity and structure in addition to some direct research and development. Provision of the management structure for information resources is especially crucial for efficient operating the system for supporting information in radiation technology, and then a standard classification structure of information must be first developed as the system for supporting information will be constructed. The standard classification structure has been analyzed by reviewing the definition of information resources in radiation technology, and those classification structures in similar systems operated by institute in radiation and other scientific fields. And, a draft version of the standard classification structure has been then provided as 7 large, 25 medium and 71 small classifications, respectively. The standard classification structure in radiation technology will be developed in 2015 through reviewing this draft version and experts' opinion. Finally, developed classification structure will be applied to the system for supporting information by considering the plan for constructing this system and database, and requirements for designing the system. Furthermore, this structure will be designed in the system for searching information by working to the individual need of information consumers.

  • An IR(information retrieval) index for dynamic document databases where insertion, deletion, and update of documents happen frequently should be frequently updated. As the conventional structure of IR index is, however, focused on the information retrieval purpose, its structure is inefficient to handle dynamic update of it. In this paper, we propose a new structure for IR Index, we call it Index Graph, which is organized by connecting multiple indexes into a graph structure. By analysis and experiment, we prove the Index Graph is superior to the conventional structure of IR index in the performance of insertion, deletion, and update of documents as well as the performance of information retrieval.

  • In this paper, a representation method for structure information retrieval without schema and DTD of XML documents is presented. While existing researches have used DTD or schema to extract structure information, we extract structure information directly from XML documents. Especially the well-formed XML documents are only required to retrieve documents in the proposed method. Thus it can retrieve more general and various documents easily compared to the existing XML retrieval systems requiring DTD or schema. Experimental result indicates that the proposed method retrieves effectively structure information of XML documents independently to DTD information.

  • This paper is to aimed to design a model of Korea defense information resource management structure from the viewpoint of system's approach, especially focusing on planning/programming procedures, organizational structure and business process re-engineering. The author analyzed current projects and plans on the field of Korea defense information systems, for finding what kinds of problems and why the problems occurred. The author concluded that many problems came from wrong approach of previous information resource management. Highlights of the proposed model are as follows: 1) Planning and programming structure must be considered as a major information resources and it must be managed as a key role through the whole system life cycle; 2) Organizational structure should be properly set up for managing and implementing information system projects; 3) Business process should also be analyzed thoroughly for re-engineering and innovating current inefficient organizational structure. These three additional viewpoints added to previous model for improving Korea defense information resource management.

  • This paper investigates the nature of Japanese argument cluster (Steedman 2000b). Based on Combinatory Categorial Grammar, a type-raising analysis of case particles which captures some aspects of the information structure in Japanese is discussed, including contrastive interpretation of coordination, wh-constructions, and some theme and rheme-related grammatical phenomena. These observations offer further support for the study of syntax, semantics, and phonology interface and the earlier analysis of English information structure.
