  • In this paper the effect of prestressing force on the first flexural natural frequency of beams is studied. Finite element technique is used to model the beam-tendon system, and the prestressing force is applied in the form of initial tension in the tendon. It is shown that the effect of prestressing force on the first natural frequency depends on bonded and unbonded nature of the tendon, and also on the eccentricity of tendon. For the beams with bonded tendon, the prestressing force does not have any appreciable effect on the first flexural natural frequency. However, for the beams with unbonded tendon, the first natural frequency significantly changes with the prestressing force and eccentricity of the tendon. If the eccentricity of tendon is small, then the first natural frequency decreases with the prestressing force and if the eccentricity is large, then the first flexural natural frequency increases with the prestressing force. Results of the present study clearly indicate that the first natural frequency can not be used as an easy indicator for detecting the loss of prestressing force, as has been attempted in some of the past studies.

  • Until now, the evaluation of prestressing force during the survice state has received limited attention. Only initial prestressing force is estimated by reading the pressure values of a hydraulic jack or by observing the initial elongation of tendons. In this study, the initial losses and time dependent losses of prestressing force have been monitored by installing 12 vibrating wire-type load cells at the part of P.C. box bridge of Gangbyun Riverside Highway. Also comparative study was made for measured prestressing losses and estimated values. 2-dimensional analysis was performed to see the trend of prestressing losses, and the results was compared with measured ones.

  • In the prestressed concrete structures, the effective prestressing force of tendon is basically most important item for structural safety and serviceability. The frictional loss is one of the major items for determinating the effective prestressing force and depend on the construction accuracy of the structures. In this thesis, it will be analyzed and found through measured hydraulic jack pressure, tendon elongation and prestressing control system that the tendancy of apparent curvature friction coefficient, the ratio of jacking force and required prestressing force, the ratio of initial jacking force and required prestressing force and compatibility of specified friction loss coefficient. The specified control limit for curvature friction coefficient of prestressing control system is about 0.25 and wobble friction coefficient 0.005. Thus, the control limit should be modified according to changed vale of friction coefficient.

  • In prestressed concrete structures, determining serviceability and safety it is important to exactly calculate effective prestress force acting on structures. for the determination of effective prestress force, friction loss of the prestressing tendon should be decided exactly, but it is very difficult to measure the exact prestress force on the site and there is no actual field data. Therefore the friction loss coefficient recommended by the specification is not verified. in this paper, the friction loss standard PSC-Beam will be investigated, and is will be found what kind of relationship between the specification and the site. The results from this study can be summarized as follows. For jacking at both ends, actual intial prestress force in the center section of PCS-Beam was about 1.61% larger than theoretical initial prestress force and for hacking at one end, actual initial prestress force was approximate 4.9% lower than theoretical initial prestress force. Thus, for the exact calculation of friction loss, friction coefficient should be modified according to jacking methods.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the lateral torsional stability of a girder with respect to the location and magnitude of prestressing force. The test of evaluating the lateral displacement and stability of a girder could cause an unexpected result due to various parameters, such as material nonlinearity, initial geometric imperfections, prestressing force, and loading and support conditions. Therefore, a small model testing was programmed to control the various parameters and assess the lateral torsional stability with respect to the prestressing force. This study proposed and fabricated an experimental apparatus that can satisfy the loading and in-plane and out-of-plane support conditions and also contol the prestressing force. The result of the experiment showed that the lateral torsional stability increased when the prestressing force was applied in the bottom flange of the girder. As a result, this study proposed an analytical equation that can account for the effect of the prestressing force in the lateral torsional stability of a girder.

  • This paper deals with the experiment and construction case of concrete beams strengthened with wire rope using the tightening force of bolts. The mechanical bolting of wire rope for prestressing force is adopted, which is very easy for construction. For the flexural strengthening effect of the proposed method, the experiment was proceeded as follows. The main parameters of specimens, concrete strength is 24MPa, are initial prestressing forces of wire rope and the number of saddle. The flexural strengths of strengthened specimens compared with non-strengthened test piece were increased about 160%. Also, as the initial prestressing forces were increased, the crack and ultimate moments were increased. The number of saddle did not play an important role for the moment capacity. This proposed method as a construction example showed a more competitive method than any others.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the loss of prestressing stress in the developed prestressing reinforcing units using steel bar and pipe (SP). The main parameters were the reinforcing bar type, the magnitude of prestressed force, and prestressing method. The test results showed that the loss of prestressing stress for SP was highest in the initial prestressing step, which was higher for the compression introduction typed specimens than tension introduction typed specimens. The loss of prestressing stress of SP made with P800 was 1.6% for the compression introduction typed specimen with 0.8fy, which was lowest than the other specimens. Meanwhile, the relaxation of SP with the respect to the time ranged between 0.4 and 1.9%, irrespective of SP material type, the magnitude of prestressed force, and prestressing method. These values were less than 2.5%, which is the maximum value for the relaxation of prestressed reinforcing steel bars in design codes. Consequently, considering the loss of stress developed in the initial prestressing step, the developed SP material type, prestressing introduction method, and magnitude are recommended to be P800, compression introduction type, and 0.8fy.

  • In this study, both an experimental test and a time history analysis with 3D modeling were performed to verify the structural analysis model in a 2-span two girder bridge of high speed railway, which was under constructed according to the ballast load of track structure. In the basis of the structural analysis model, the analysis of construction step was carried out to investigate the reduction effect of moment in middle support of the bridge which has initial prestressing force according to camber control. The initial prestressing force of proper level was calculated, and then the reduction of moment for economical bridge section was studied. Finally, a bridge analysis method was presented for an economical and efficient design in steel composite bridge.

  • This paper presents results of one-year monitoring on prestressing force of a 7-wire steel post-tensioning strand which is installed in a UHPC(ultra high performance concrete) bridge with 11.0 m long, 5.0 m wide, and 0.6 m high by using a FBG-encapsulated 7-wire steel strand. The initial prestressing forces and the prestress changes during a vehicle load test were measured using the FBG-encapsulated strand. The results show that the FBG-encapsulated 7-wire strand is very effective for monitoring the prestress forces even the change in the tension force is very small. Additionally, it was indicated that selection of the thermal expansion coefficient which is used for the temperature correction shall be carefully carried out.

  • In this study, the interfacial stresses in RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate are evaluated using an analytical approach, based on the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions. A comparison of the interfacial stresses obtained from the present analytical model and other existing models is undertaken. Otherwise, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical and material properties on the variation of interfacial stresses in damaged RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate. The results obtained indicate that the damage degree has little effect on the maximum shear stress, with a variation less than 5% between the damaged and undamaged RC beams. However, the results also reveal that the prestressing level has a significant effect on the interfacial stresses; hence the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 100 kN gives 110% higher maximum shear stress than the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 50 kN. The values of shear stress obtained by the analytical approach are approximately equal to 44% of those obtained from the numerical solution, while the interfacial normal stresses predicted by the numerical study are approximately 26% higher than those calculated by the analytical solution.
