  • The characteristics of the fuel quantity, injection rate and macro spray development was investigated under a range of diesel fuel temperatures. The actual injection quantity decreased despite the same signal of the injection start and injection duration as the fuel temperature decreased. The injection rate measurements confirmed that the actual injection commencement was delayed and the actual injection duration was shortened under lower fuel temperature conditions, which explains why the injection quantity decreased. Spray tip penetration with a lower fuel temperature was longer than that with a higher fuel temperature due to the deteriorated atomization. As a pre-test for the combustion experiment under low temperature conditions, piston targeting with pilot injection was accomplished, which showed that the fuel droplet from pilot injection was introduced into the crevice area. This suggests that the pilot injection quantity and timing should be chosen with careful consideration for actual applications.

  • Heat and fluid flow in a compressor into which liquid refrigerant is injected for the purpose of reducing discharge gas temperature in a heat pump system has been numerically studied. A mechanistic approach encompassing liquid jet breakup and droplet evaporation has been performed to investigate the effects of liquid injection on the spacial and temporal variation of the gas temperature and pressure inside the compressor cylinder. Various parameters, such as liquid injection mass, time, duration and droplet size, are considered in the present study to elucidate the flow field inside the compressor. As the injection mass is increased, discharge gas temperature is decreased, while the pressure is increased due to the added mass of the injection. For the injected liquid mass corresponding to 15% of the total vapor mass in the cylinder, the discharge gas temperature drops by 22.4 K. It is observed that the droplet size plays a major role in the evaporation rate of the droplets that determines the degree of the discharge temperature drop.

  • In the present paper the effect of various process conditions on the final weight of injection molded rectangular plates has been investigated in detail. The main parameters involved in the simulations were melt temperature, mold temperature, injection speed and packing pressure. The dimensions of the plate used were 100mm long, 2mm of width and polystyrene was used as a molding material. The shear viscosity of the polymeric material was treated as a function of shear rate, temperature and pressure through the whole processes including packing and cooling stages. By increasing a packing pressure the final weight of sample increased linearly. Furthermore, as the melt temperature, the mold temperature and the injection speed increased, the final weight of the injection molded plate decreased within the molding window.

  • Diesel low temperature combustion (LTC) is the concept where fuel is burned at a low temperature oxidation regime so that $NO_x$ and particulate matters (PM) can simultaneously be reduced. There are two ways to realize low temperature combustion in compression ignition engines. One is to supply a large amount of EGR gas combined with advanced fuel injection timing. The other is to use a moderate level of EGR with fuel injection at near TDC which is generally called Modulated kinetics (MK) method. In this study, the effects of fuel injection pressure on performance and emissions of a single cylinder engine were evaluated using the latter approach. The engine test results show that MK operations were successfully achieved over a range of with 950 to 1050 bar in injection pressure with 16% $O_2$ concentration, and $NO_x$ and PM were significantly suppressed at the same time. In addition, with an increase in fuel injection pressure, the levels of smoke, THC and CO were decreased while $NO_x$ emissions were increased. Moreover, as fuel injection timing retarded to TDC, more THC and CO emissions were generated, but smoke and $NO_x$ were decreased.

  • The effects of injection molding conditions on the uniformity and brightness of light guide plate(LGP) with micro-patterns were investigated in the present study. An injection molding system for stampers with mirco-pattern was designed and manufactured to perform experiment. Variations of injection molding speed, mold and melt temperature for LGP were considered in this work. Also, injection molding characteristics of LGP were investigated by numerical analysis using plastic injection molding commercial code. It was shown that injection molding conditions such as injection speed, melt temperature and mold temperature can have an effect on the uniformity and brightness of light guide plate.

  • Turbulent temperature field in a channel subject to strong wall injection has been investigated via direct numerical simulation technique. These flows are pertinent to internal flows inside hybrid rocket motors. A simplified model problem where a regression process at the propellant surface is idealized by wall injection has been investigated to understand how the temperature field is modified. The effect of strong wall injection displaces thermal boundary layer away from the wall and this causes a sharp drop of friction temperature. Turbulent diffusivity and dissipation time scale for temperature field are found to show large variations in the streamwise direction under application of wall blowing. It is, thus, expected that more sophisticated turbulence models would be required to predict the disturbed temperature field accurately.

  • In this study, proper injection molding condition has been studied through stress relaxation tests in order to experimentally investigate the effect of the condition on softening of mold product, using specimens produced under the different conditions according to the recommendation of resin manufactures. As a result, softening of the specimens was found to be strongly influenced by material melting temperature. The specimen with higher material melting temperature is found to have lower softening. However, softening of the specimen with lower mold temperature has an decrement, compared with other specimens. In particular, specimen with notch is influenced by mold temperature. The softening increase with higher injection speed and pressure. Finally in order to improve softening, material melting temperature, injection speed and injection pressure were found to be increased with low mold temperature.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the effects of fuel temperature on the spray characteristics of a dual-orifice type swirl injector which is used in gas turbines. The major parameters affecting spray characteristics are fuel temperature and injection pressure entering into the injector. Fuel temperature is shown to have strong influence on the spray characteristics especially at a lower temperature. In this study, fuel temperature is varied from $30^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ and injection pressure is altered from 3 to $7 kg_{f}$ /$cm^{2}$. Two kinds of fuel, which have different surface tension and viscosity, are chosen as an atomizing fluid. As a result, injection instability occurs in the low temperature range due to icing phenomenon and the change of fuel properties. As the injection pressure increases, the kinematic viscosity range for stable atomization becomes wider. The factor controlling the SMD of spray is substantially different depending on the fuel temperature range.

  • Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity runner for mass production, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to minimize filling imbalance between cavity to cavity during processing. However, even though geometrically balanced runner is used, filling imbalances have sometimes been observed. These filling imbalances have historically been considered as result of uneven mold temperature and mold deflection, but it actually results from non-symmetrically shear, pressure, temperature distribution within melt material as it flows through the runner system. Filling imbalance could be decreased by modifying processing conditions that are related to shear, pressure, temperature such as injection rate, mold temperature, injection pressure, melt temperature. In this study, a series of experiment was conducted using Taguchi method to determine which processing condition influence as the primary cause of filling imbalance in geometrically balanced runner system. As a result of experiments, this paper could present an optimal processing condition to minimize variable that brings about filling imbalance geometrically balanced runner system

  • Thermoplastic elastormer (TPE) has many advantages such as high flexibility, high elasticity and high elongation, etc. TPE is easily molded such as plastic materials, therefore, many TPE parts are applied as home appliances and mechanical parts. However, if TPE is once molded, its mechanical properties are changed by injection molding conditions such as melt temperature, mold temperature, injection pressure and holding pressure, etc. In this study, the influences of the injection molding condition on the mechanical properties of thermoplastic vulcanizates(TPVs), which is one of the TPE, were investigated. By the injection molding experiment, as increasing the melt temperature, the tensile strength, shrinkage and hardness decreased. By the scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyzing the TPVs' crystallization, the morphology was affected by the melt temperature.
