한국 전래동화 학습 사이트를 활용한 영어 지도 방안 (Improvement of English competence through Korean folktale web-sites)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a model for an English learning web-site using Korean folktales to stimulate the interest of beginners learning English, (elementary and early middle school ages) and suggest an integrated way of teaching 4 skills. The study first reviews the theoretical and historical backgrounds of storytelling using Korean folk tale, WBI (Web Based Learning), and learner-centered learning. Storytelling using Korean folk tale is an interactive way of teaching English through the use of words and actions from Korean traditional culture. The students can take pride in their own culture while learning a foreign language since they are familiar with the stories and the culture. Nowadays multicultural education is one of the big features of global education. Therefore there are benefits of studying English through Korean folktales. The websites can help students learn English ubiquitously with a learner-centered focus. For the study, we analyzed several digital English storytelling websites. The paper concludes that digital English story books need to improve their interactive ways of teaching for more effective learning. The authors created an integrated English learning website model using Korean folktales for beginners. We hope to introduce this type of learning through the website for higher level students in middle school. Further study should be conducted in order to make the websites more meaningful and useful for Korean students learning English.

Effects of Cultural Teaching through Movies in English Classes on EFL College Students' Attitudes towards English Reading

  • In the age of technology and information, communicating with people from different cultures is significantly important. Regarding this perspective, communicative competence has been the focus in the EFL educational context. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using movies in a culture-integrated English reading course at the college level. In order to achieve this purpose, pre- and post-reading comprehension tests, pre- and post-surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of data analysis showed that using movies in the culture-integrated English reading class positively affected students' interest and confidence towards English reading as well as their reading achievement. In this respect, we suggest that cultural teaching through movies in English classes should be learner-centered so that learners can proactively analyze and understand different cultural backgrounds shown in the movies and build schemas which can be used in their learning process.

Phonological Awareness Integrated Instruction: The Effect of Analogies/Anagrams on Vocabulary Acquisition Scores

  • Research studies have shown that phonological awareness focused analogies and anagrams can be used as an effective game-based teaching instruction. However, previous studies used analogies and anagrams as separate instructional tools, especially in EFL-related situations. There has been no vocabulary learning in analogies/anagrams instruction provided, nor has there been usage of an integrated workbook for 'vocabulary learning and analogies/anagrams'. This study examined the effect on learners' vocabulary acquisition scores when a truly phonological awareness integrated 'analogies/anagrams and vocabulary learning' workbook was used as an instructional practice workbook. The results show that the phonological awareness integrated instruction significantly increased learners' vocabulary acquisition scores among 40 college students with minimal or basic level of English proficiency.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 실시간-비실시간 온라인플랫폼을 통한 역량강화중심 대학영어 교수-학습 모형을 개발하는 것이다. 본 연구에서의 대학영어 교수-학습 모형은 의사소통, 자기주도성, 협동성 등의 역량증진을 위한 딕토글로스 활동을 다양한 온라인플랫폼 기능 활용을 고도화하여 효과적으로 적용하기 위한 것이다. 딕토글로스는 의사소통의 네가지 기능(듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기)을 통합하여 사용하는 언어 교수-학습 활동이다. 본 연구에서의 대학영어 수업은 의사소통 중심 통합적 영어교육에 중점을 두고 있다. 그리고 본 연구에서의 교수-학습 모형은 구성주의 이론에 입각한 온라인기반 영어통합 교수-학습 방법으로서, 각 단계별로 학습자와 교수자의 역할을 제시하였다.

프로젝트 기반 학습의 영자 신문 발간을 통한 과학 영재 학생의 영어 의사소통능력 향상 (Developing English Communicative Ability for Science Gifted Students through Project-based Learning of Publishing English Newspapers)

  • 본 연구는 영자 신문 발간 활동이 영어 의사소통 능력 향상에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 확인하며 프로젝트 기반의 출판 과정을 통한 독립적이면서도 협동적인 학습 환경의 구현가능성을 탐색한다. 한국과학영재학교의 첫 번째 영자 신문 발간 기획은 프로젝트 기반의 교수학습 방법을 적용한 일련의 단계를 거쳐서 완성되었다. 영어 능력과 참여도에 따른 학생 편집자 선발 과정을 시작으로 분야와 주제 및 제재를 선택하고 역할과 기사를 배분하며 결과물을 통합 편집하는 과정을 거친다. 전 과정에 걸쳐 참여자들은 최소한의 지도 감독 아래서 독립적이면서도 협력적으로 활동에 참여하였다. 사후 설문조사에 따르면 성공적인 영자신문의 발간이 전반적 영어 능력을 향상 시켰을 뿐만 아니라 긍정적인 학습자 자아인식과 주도적인 학습 태도를 키웠다고 나타났다. 본 연구는 언어 교육 뿐 아니라 통합적인 프로젝트 기반 교수 학습에 있어 신문 잡지 등의 출판 활동이 주는 장점을 논하는 한편, 향후 프로젝트 교수 학습 방법과 영어 의사소통능력 향상과 관련된 보다 심화된 연구가능성을 제시한다.

The Applications of On-line English Newspapers into Classroom Instruction

  • The purposes of this paper are to show that learning English via on-line English newspapers is very effective and to suggest several applications of an English newspaper on the web in English education to improve Korean speakers' English proficiency. Firstly, this paper overviews about Newspapers In Education (NIE). Secondly, a comparison between an on-line English newspaper and a traditional one is made, focusing on their advantages and characteristics. Thirdly, some ways to use various articles of a digital English newspaper in classroom instruction are explored. Lastly, the suggestions of this study are integrated into English learning instruction of an extracurricular English learning club of Business English Department. This club includes free utilization of an Internet surfing center, Internet Cafe, in a College Library. And then, a survey among the club members is conducted and its statistical results are analyzed.

Project-based CALL Class: Linking the Theory and Practice

  • This paper introduces a class model based on a course, Internet English, offered by an English department at a university. The course has dual purposes of developing students I English skills and Internet using skills at the same time. In support of using the Internet for language learning, the advantages of project-based language learning and constructivist learning in relation to CALL are explored. The activities in this course, which are basically project-based under the paradigm of constructivist learning perspective, are explained in detail to show the relationship between second language learning theory and teaching application. The way how the four language skills - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - are integrated in this class is described as well. Finally, judgmental evaluation of the course by the students is noted. The results show that a project-based CALL class could be a promising class model to realize an integrative, constructivist, and authentic learning.

한국 영어 학습자의 관점에서 본 통합과 분리 형태초점교수법 (Integrated and Isolated Form-focused Instruction from Korean EFL Learners' Perspective)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 한국대학생의 통합과 분리 형태초점 교수법에 대한 견해를 조사하고, 이러한 견해가 집중도와 문법학습의 믿음과 어떠한 상관관계가 있는 지, 추가적으로 수준별 성별 차이점을 조사하는 것이다. 본 연구의 목적을 위해서 서울소재 대학생 157명을 대상으로 실시한 설문지 조사 결과를 상관관계분석과 T 검정을 사용하여 분석하였다. 참여 학생들은 통합 형태초점교수법을 선호하는 것으로 나타났으며, 통합 형태초점교수법의 선호도는 학습자의 영어 수업시간의 집중도와 영어 수준과 유의미하게 연관성이 있다는 것을 보여준다. 다른 한편으로 분리 형태초점 교수법의 선호도는 학습자의 문법에 대한 믿음과 유의미한 상관관계를 보여주었고 수준별 성별로 모든 학생들이 공통적인 결과로 나타났다. 결론적으로 통합 형태초점 교수법은 학습자의 집중도와 영어 수준에, 분리 형태초점 교수법은 학습자의 문법 학습에 대한 믿음에 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있다. 결론적으로 교실현장에서 통합 형태초점교수법을 사용할 필요하며, 이러한 접근도 학습자의 수준과 집중도를 고려할 필요가 있다는 것을 보여준다.

The Application of English Learning Activities based on the Technologies of Web 2.0

  • Due to the development of technology even in learning and education area, many studies have begun to make a new attempts to research by using SNS, breaking away from traditional learning methods. However, the limitations of these studies are restricted only to the use of wireless Internet and writing on Web sites. This study aims to conduct a research on English learning activities that utilize various technologies such as Bigdata, Facebook, Social Network Services (SNS) and English applications. In addition, this study looks into how these modern technologies can be integrated in the classrooms and which activities can be applied in the English classroom. This research is to suggest effective English learning methods through a thorough investigation on the effectivity of various technologies based on the Web 2.0 such as Flickr, blogs, MySpace, and online discussion board within the context of the English learning. To verify the effect of the study, the subjects are divided into experimental and control group. The experiment is proceeded with pre- and post-test. The experimental group is designed to verify the effects using SNS tools such as Facebook, Bigdata, and Online Massive Learning. A survey is conducted to determine the preference of utilizing social networking sites and to analyze the effects in class. The result is that the average scores for experimental group have improved more than the average of control group. The comparison of pre and post-test of the experimental group shows that the significance of the higher and median group was statistically significant at the p<0.01.

읽기 학습 전략 훈련을 통한 초등학교 영어 학습 부진아의 초기 읽기 능력 향상 연구 (A study of the effect of learning strategy based early reading instruction for underachieving students)

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of learning strategy-based early reading instruction for English underachieving students. For this purpose of the study, sixteen learning strategies were driven from the review of previous related literature and the result of the survey conducted to the students and the teachers. Strategy integrated early reading instruction was implemented to nine students for thirteen weeks. The word recognition test was conducted before and after the instruction to examine whether the instruction had effects on the increase of their early reading skill. In addition, in order to investigate certain change in students' affective aspects after the instruction. The research conducted survey to the students. A teacher's field note and students' class journal were also analyzed to verify the results from the quantitative test. The results indicated that the instruction led to the increase of students' early reading skills. It was also found that the instruction motivated the underachieving students to devise a strategy for their learning process.
