  • We report on the development of a fiber optic hydrophone consists of a sensing Michelson interferometer and a compensating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical path length compensation. The double interferometer configuration has the following advantages: the hydrophone can be made more small; a laser source with a relatively short coherence length can be used; and the compensating interferometer can be located near the signal processing electronics, far away from the sensing interferometer and noise introduced by reference arm can be greatly reduced. The performance of the hydrophone is evaluated experimentally by immersing the sensing interferometer in a water tank to detect underwater acoustic signals generated by an acoustic wave projector. Experimental results show that over the frequency range of 1 to 4 kHz, the hydrophone has an almost flat response with an average normalized sensitivity of -302 dB re 1/ μ Pa.

  • The van Cittert-Zernike theorem has been used in radio astronomy. Recently, the van Cittert-Zernike theorem has been tried to 3D source reconstruction. A couple of interferometer has been used in 3D coherence imaging like Michelson Stellar Interferometer and Rotational Shearing Interferometer. We propose a new type of interferometer, which is a wavefront folding interferometer with a corner cube. By characteristics of the corner cube, it is capable of measuring both mutual intensity and cross spectral density function, and it is very easy to align and robust to disturbance. We simulate the feasibility of this interferometer setup by simulation of point source reconstruction.

  • Fizeau interferometer is used for inspecting the lens surface profile accurately. This study is focused on the design and optical measuring techniques for large optical components, such as a reflection mirror for large area lithography or astronomical purpose. A tower type Fizeau interferometer is designed and set up in horizontally with a 45$^{\circ}$ fold mirror which makes easy to align the optical path of heavy interferometer system. To align the optical path, a five-axes stage for the interferometer is required. This study shows a method of the 45$^{\circ}$ fold mirror alignment by using a three-axis stage instead of adjusting the interferometer itself or measuring object. This system will be installed on the large optics polishing machine during the manufacturing process as an on-machine inspection system.

  • The Goheung radio interferometer with three 1.8-m antennas has been installed at National Youth Space Center in Goheung, Korea. The interferometric observation of the Sun using the Goheung radio interferometer was carried out and the observed data was analysed to construct the radio contour map of the Sun in 2014. The specifications of Goheung radio interferometer and the synthesized interferometer map of the Sun are provided. As a science activity center for youth, we currently provide students some experimental activities based on the principle of radio observation and interferometer. Our goal is to encourage youth to be interested in astronomy by engaging real experience of radio observation and constructing a synthesized interferometer map with observed data.

  • Nonlinearity is one of the primary causes of error in precision length measurement using laser interferometer. It arises periodically. The periodical nonlinearity usually ranges from sub-naometre to several namertres. In the homodyne interferometer, it results from a number of factors including polarization mixing, imperfect optical clement, unequal gain of detectors, misalignment of axes between input beam and beam splitter. In this paper, we described a method for measuring and compensating the nonlinearity of homodyne interferometer using the elliptical least-square fitting technique associated with electric method and experimental results in one frequency polarization interferometer.

  • One of properties which X-ray and Neutron can be applied nondestructive test is penetration into the object with interaction leads to decrease in intensity. X-ray interaction with the matter caused by electrons, Neutron caused by atoms. They share applications in nondestructive test area because of their similarities of interaction mechanism. Grating interferometer is the one of applications produces phase contrast image and dark field image. It is defined by Talbot interferometer and Talbot-Lau interferometer according to Talbot effect and Talbot-Lau effect respectively. Talbot interferometer works with coherence beam like X-ray, and Talbot-Lau has an effect with incoherence beam like Neutron. It is important to expect the interference in grating interferometer compared normal nondestructive system. In this paper, simulation works are conducted according to Talbot and Talbot-Lau interferometer in case of X-ray and Neutron. Variation of interference intensity with X-ray and Neutron based on wave theory is constructed and calculate elements consist the system. Additionally, Talbot and Talbot-Lau interferometer is simulated in different kinds of conditions.

  • The nonlinearity of a laser interferometer usually ranges from sub-nanometer to several manometers. This nonlinearity, which has periodic characteristics, limits the accuracy of the interferometer at the sub-nanometer level. The nonlinearity error of the one-frequency homodyne interferometer with quadrature fringe detection results from a number of factors including polarization mixing by imperfect optical elements, unequal gain of photo detectors, lack of quadrature between two signals and misalignment. In this paper, we described a method for measuring and compensating the nonlinearity of homodyne interferometer using the elliptical fitting technique with least-square method. Experimental results demonstrate that $^\pm$3.5 nm nonlinearity can be reduced to $^\pm$0.2 nm level.

  • The laser interferometer has been used for measurement of the micro displacement error. Although the laser interferometer is widely accepted as a tool for measurement of motion accuracy, the set-up procedure is time-consuming because of the strict requirement on alignment between a laser head and optic units. This paper addresses the development of a laser interferometer to measure the micro displacement for a micro machine. The portable laser interferometer which integrates a laser probe and optics, is developed for the convenient measurement. For the experiment, moving mirror set up on the micro stage. The velocity decoding board is also added to calculate doppler shift frequency directly. The output signal is obtained and analyzed by LabView. Finally experiments are found out the relation between micro displacement and output signal.

  • A compact and two-dimensional atomic force microscope (AFM) using an orthogonal sample scanner, a calibrated homodyne laser interferometer and a commercial AFM head was developed for use in the nanometrology field. The x and y position of the sample with respect to the tip are acquired by using the laser interferometer in the open-loop state, when each z data point of the AFM head is taken. The sample scanner which has a motion amplifying mechanism was designed to move a sample up to $100{\times}100{\mu}m^2$ in orthogonal way, which means less crosstalk between axes. Moreover, the rotational errors between axes are measured to ensure the accuracy of the calibrated AFM within the full scanning range. The conventional homodyne laser interferometer was used to measure the x and y displacements of the sample and compensated via an X-ray interferometer to reduce the nonlinearity of the optical interferometer. The repeatability of the calibrated AFM was measured to sub-nm within a few hundred nm scanning range.

  • This paper deals with the measurement theory and technique of linear expansion coefficient for solid material using Michelson interferometer. The Michelson interferometer produces interference fringes by splitting a beam of monochromatic light so that one beam strikes a fixed mirror and the other a movable mirror. When the reflected beams are brought back together, an interference pattern results. Precise distance measurements until a quarter of wave length can be made with the Michelson interferometer by moving the mirror and counting the interference fringes which move by a photo diode. This paper represents the application of Michelson interferometer for measuring infinitesimal length system and shows the measurement method of linear expansion coefficients for various materials like copper, aluminum and iron. the results are good agreement with theoretical value within margin of error for each materials.
