  • This work investigates the effects of vibration on the passive intermodulation distortion characteristics of base station antennas for 800 MHz CDMA mobile communication systems. In general, base station antennas are located at high positions such as on building rooftops or iron towers. Thus the antennas are always affected by random vibrations, coming from various natural environmental factors such as rain and wind, or from living environmental factors such as vehicles and trains passing by. The measured intermodulation distortion characteristics before and after vibration accelerated degradation test show that vibrations are indeed the main cause for the intermodulation distortion performances of such antennas. To minimize the effects of vibrations, a new antenna design isptoposed that has an improved tolerance for vibrations. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna design dramatically reduces the degradation of the intermodulation distortion more than 35 dB.

  • Nowadays, the interference between neighbor basestations is getting higher as mobile communication services expand, then the increase of the interference causes IMD(Intermolulation Distortion) problems for not only active devices but also passive devices. In this paper, we have designed and assembled several adapters having variable plating thickness and materials to analyze PIMD(Passive Intermodulation Distortion) mechanisms for coaxial cables which is one of the representative passive RF devices. The measurement results of the assembled adapters show that IM level depends on conductivity of plating materials, plating thickness, device structure, aging effect and so on. Furthermore, we have obtained PIMD mechanisms and some control methods of PIMD from the results.

  • In this paper, a new power amplifier is proposed for reduction of amplified RX band noise signals as well as intermodulation distortion signals using feedforward technique. This power amplifier is implemented for IMT-2000 basestation TX frequency band. Both TX band intermodulation distortion signals and RX band noise signals are reduced by controlling variable attenuator, phase shifter and error amplifier. The proposed power amplifier, which contains two loops-intermodulation distortion signals cancellation loop and RX band noise signals cancellation loop, can provide duplexer with low TX path insertion loss for various wireless communication systems due to choice of loose RX attenuation characteristic. The principle of the proposed amplifier is described graphically based on the conceptual schematic diagram. A two-tone test for power amplifier is done at 2.14GHz with frequency spacing of 5MHz, and RX band rejection test is done over RX full band of 60MHz with 1.95GHz center frequency. Experimental results represent that the cancellation performance of intermodulation distortion signals and RX band noise signals are more than 3 1dB and 21dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, we developed an intelligent and wideband RF-receiver module to represent a high dynamic range and good linearity characteristics up to 650MHz-2700MHz frequency band. and implemented an intelligent digital-RF- distorted signal measuring system for the RF distortion (intermodulation) signals. Broadband RF-receive module was designed to represent the optimized linear parameters of the receiver to meet the low noise and wide dynamic range. The designed intelligent digital-distortion(intermodulation) signal measument system measured by applying the 1MHz IF of third intermodulation signal of DUT and Measured data was recorded by program on the PC monitor with GUI interface. By variable up to 650MHz-2700MHz measured data showed up to -127.8dBc to -138dBc of the distortion (intermodulation) signal. And developed intelligent digital- distortion signal measurement system can be used to measure intermodulation distortion signal of wireless system widely.

  • The analysis of the two-tone intermodulation distortion of multistage two-ports with gain and mismatching losses is presented with simplified two-port analyses and statistical viewpoint. The uncertainty obtained from unknown phase angles of the intermodulation distortion signals to the system designer is reduced using stochastic process, hence improving the accuracy of the solution. Based on the dc power dependance of third-order intercept point of each stage, the new efficient method for improving the total intercept point is also suggested with only the relation of dc power and available power gain criteria. Experimental verification on specific amplifiers used for cellular mobile communication comparing predicted and measured intercept points for various power conditions is presented.

  • A linear power amplifier is particularly emphasized on the system using a linear modulations, such as 16QAM and QPSK with pulse shaping, because intermodulation distortion which causes adjacent channel interference and co-channel interference is mostly generated in a nonlinear power amplifier. In this paper, parameters of a linearization loop, such as an amplitude imbalance, a phase imbalance and a delay mismatch, are briefly analyzed to get a specific cancellation performance and linearization bandwidth Experimental results are presented for IMT-2000 frequency band The center frequency of the feedforward amplifier is 2140MHz with 60MHz bandwidth When the average output power of feedforward amplifier is 20 Watt, the intermodulation cancellation performance is more than 28dB. In this case, the output power of feedforward amplifier reduced 3.5dB because of extra delay line loss and coupling loss. The feedforward amplifier efficiency is more than 7% for multicarrier signals.

According to the standard measurement regulation by IEC, the Passive Intermodulation Distortion of Wibro relay high power filter are measured. We suggest the coating materials and coating methods of high power filter inner structure to reduce the PIMD generating by insert loss and worse flatness of filter delay in the design of Wibro high power filter efficiently.

  • Intermodulation distortion degrades the S/N(signal-to-noise) of the original signal and also affects the adjacent channels. Intermodulation distortion is mainly caused by the nonlinear characteristics of the power amplifier. If the power amplifier with nonlinear characteristics has a memory effect, the intermodulation distortions occurred in the power amplifier are generated in various and complex forms. The predistorter is used as a way to improve intermodulation distortions. In order to efficiently utilize the performance of the predistorter, the memory effect of the power amplifier must be reduced. In this paper, we describe the design method of bias circuit to reduce the memory effect in power amplifiers. To reduce the memory effect, the bias circuit must have a high impedance for the signal and a low impedance for the envelope(modulating signal) and the second harmonic component of the signal. To verify the performance of the bias circuit designed considering the memory effect, a power amplifier operating at 170 ~ 220MHz was designed and implemented. The designed bias circuit has a large impedance in the operating frequency band and low impedance in the envelope signal and the second harmonic of the signal. As a result of the performance measurement, it was found that the asymmetric intermodulation distortion component is improved by 3.7dB.

  • In this paper, a power amplifier intermodulation distortion has been analyzed to improve linearity and the analysis results are used to minimize the distortion for linear power amplifier design. The proposed design technique is which the intermodulation distortions of the final amplifier are removed by driver intermodulation distortions. This proposed technique is based on AM to AM distortion analysis using power series, and AM to PM distortion analysis results using Bessel function. To verify this technique implement a cellular HPA(High Power Amplifier) 30W. From the results of the implementation and measurement for the linear power amplifier, the spurious characteristic is shown as 50 dBc at 1.98 MHz with 30 W with 20FA. These results show that distortion characteristics are improved as much as 10 dB in spurious characteristic compared with conventional design method.
