  • Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be the cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.

  • The railway system requires safety and reliability of service of all railway vehicles. Suitable technical systems and working methods adapted to it, which meet the requirements on safety and good order of traffic, should be maintained. For detection of defects, non-destructive testing methods-which should be quick, reliable and cost-effective - are most often used. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to detect a crack initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing due to noise echoes. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in railway wheelset.

  • The wheelsets are one of most important component: damages in wheel tread and press fitted axle are a significant cost for railway industry. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to use this method because of its high viscosity and because its sensitivity is affected by temperature. Also, due to noise echoes it is difficult to detect defects initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in the tread of railway wheelset.

  • In the performance of a wind turbine system, the blades play a vital role. However, they are susceptible to damage arising from complex and irregular loading (which may even cause catastrophic collapse), and they are expensive to maintain. Therefore, it is very important both to find defects after blade manufacturing is completed and to find damage after the blade is used for a certain period of time. This study provides a new perspective for the detection of internal defects in glass-fiber- and carbon-fiber-reinforced panels, which are used as the main materials in wind turbine blades. A gap or fracture between fiber-reinforced materials, which may occur during blade manufacturing or operation, is simulated by drilling a hole 5 mm in diameter in the middle layer of the laminated material. Then, a digital-image-correlation (DIC) method is used to detect internal defects in the blade. Tensile load is applied to the fabricated specimen using a tensile tester, and the generated changes are recorded and analyzed with the DIC system. In the glass-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from a strain value of 5% until the end of the experiment, while in the case of the carbon-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from 1% onward. It was proved using the DIC system that the defect was detected as a certain level of strain difference developed around the internal defects, according to the material properties.

  • Thixoforming process has been accepted as a new method for fabricating near net shaped products with lighweight aluminum alloys. The thixoforming process consists of reheating process of billet, billet handing filling into the die cavity and solidification of thixoformed part,. in this paper the thixoforming experiments are performed with two different die temperature ({{{{ TAU _d}}}}=20$0^{\circ}C$ 30$0^{\circ}C$) and orifice gate type. The microstructures of SSM(357, A490 and ALTHIX 86S) fabricated in thixoforming process are evaluated in therms of globularization and grain size. effect of alloying elements onthe surface and internal defects is investigated. Finally the methods to obtain the thixoformed products with good mechanical propertis are proposed by solution for avoiding the surface and internal defects.

  • A nondestructive evaluation technique for detecting internal defects of an hot forged Al-Si alloy part is established in this study. Ultrasonic characteristics of various internal planar defects are investigated by experiments for establishing a reliable test procedure. The effect of the angle between ultrasonic energy propagation directions and planar defects on the ultrasonic signal configuration is evaluated in the pulse-echo technique. A characteristic of ultrasonic signal for the internal planar defect located near the edge is also evaluated. The applicability of the through-transmission technique is also discussed. Reliability of the presented approach is validated by the destructive testing for more than 500 specimens.

  • For 6H-SiC crystals which was obtained by sublimation growth, the formation of micropipes and internal planar defects was discussed in consideration of the inter-relationship between mass adsorption behavior and the defects origin on the growth interface on the basis of KSV theory and the the step growth pattern on the vicinal plane. Micropipes and planar defects was formed in the region which the step could not be grown by impurities impinging. It was realized that the internal defects formation was related to the crystallographic step planes formed on the growth interface and the migration of the molecules adsorbed on it.

  • Modeling and analysis using a ray tracing method for internal defects were described. Reflection and refraction of rays on the interface of defects were modeled using the Harvey model and the Lambertian model. The diffraction on the interface of defects affected the incoming signals and it could evaluate any defects in the matter and its signal would be analyzed with the ray tracing simulation. The simulation results were compared with actual detecting signals and the ray tracing model was shown in good agreement with experimental data. This method has a possibility to be used as wave propagation modeling in non-destructive testing.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in representation of a globular radiopaque mass on the pantomograms and Waters' views and to compare the efficacy of periapical radiograms, pantomograms and Waters' views in detection of defects on the internal walls of the maxillary sinus. This study was performed with dried human skull. For the study of difference of radiopaque mass shadow in the two views, rubber ball with a diameter of 10㎜ was used as the experimental lesion. It was placed successively on the internal wall of the anterior, posterior, medial, lateral walls and floor of the maxillary sinus. To examine the detectability of defects for radiographic techniques, defects were formed in the anterior, posterior, medial, lateral walls, and floor of the maxillary sinus. They were formed with 0.5㎜, 0.75㎜, 1.0㎜, 2.0㎜ and 3.0㎜ sized steel round burs with a slow speed dental handpiece. By subsequently plugging the holes with zinc oxide eugenol paste, radiopaque defects were produced. After that the periapical radiograms, the pantomograms and the Waters' views were taken each and every defect. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Rubber balls placed on each internal wall of the maxillary sinus were correctly depicted on the posterior wall and the floor in case of the pantomogram, and on the anterior wall and the medial wall in case of the Waters' view. 2. On the detectability of defects for each radiographic technique, radiolucent defects were detected in different places for each technique. Periapical radiogram could detect 1.0㎜ defect on the floor of the maxillary sinus, pantomogram could detect 2.0㎜ defect on every internal wall of the maxillary sinus, and Waters' view could detect 3.0㎜ defect on the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. 3. On the detectability of defects for each radiographic technique, radiopaque defects were detected in different places for each technique. Periapical radiogram could clearly detect 0.5㎜ defect on the floor of the maxillary sinus, pantomogram could detect 0.5㎜ defect on every internal wall of the maxillary sinus, and finally Waters' view could detect 0.5㎜defect on the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus but 0.75㎜ defect on the anterior wall, lateral wall and floor of the maxillary sinus. As the result, the periapical radiogram is the most simple and satisfactory method for investigating in the maxillary sinus. The pantomogram is suitable method for screening of changes in the maxillary sinus. And the Waters' view is available for detect of lesion in the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. For the purpose of accurate diagnosis and evaluation of lesion in the maxillary sinus, these techniques supplement each other.
