  • The 3-D modeling of ocean finite element method(OFEM) using $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and tetrahedron grids has been used to investigate the internal wave generation during the expansion of the deep water from the open sea to the shelf with a simple shape, which can be widely used in the fields of submarine development, ocean environment and meteorology, etc. In this paper, the detailed configuration of internal wave with its length and height and also the distribution of salinity and turbulent kinematic energy, etc. were derived. It is hoped that this OFEM method can be successfully applied to the numerical calculation of internal wave for and the oceanographic problems (tidal flows around underwater hill, plateau, Georges Bank, etc.) and ocean engineering problems(flow past artificial sea reefs) in future.

  • This paper describes the generation and propagation of internal solitary wave in a two-layer fluid system by numerical analysis. Characteristics of interfacial soliton such as wave type, wave height, wave celerity are investigated numerically with respect to an extent of initial disturbance, fluid thicknesses of the two fluids and etc. The difference between the internal wave propagation on sloping beach and flat bottom was also examined. Laboratory experiments were conducted in the wave flume and compared with the results of numerical computation for verification.

  • An internal wave observation experiment by SAR in South China Sea is described. Two scenes of Radarsat ScanSAR images were acquired. Internal solitary waves are found in all the two images. It is concluded that these internal waves are generated in Bashi channel. Relationship between internal wave generation and tide is studied based on analyzing of tidal data of Legaspi in Philippine. Using ocean environmental data of this sea area internal waves’ amplitude and wave speed are detected by SAR images.

  • Clean and renewable energy technologies using ocean energy give us non-polluting alternatives to fossil and nuclear-fueled power plants to meet establishment of countermeasures against the global warming and growing demand for electrical energy. Among the ocean energy resources, wave power takes a growing interest because of its enormous amount of potential energy in the world. Therefore, various types of wave power conversion system to capture the energy of ocean waves have been developed. However, suitable turbine type is not normalized yet because of relatively low efficiency of the turbine systems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal flow and performance characteristics of a cross-flow type hydro turbine, which will be built in a caisson for wave power generation. Numerical simulation using a commercial CFD code is conducted to clarify the effects of the turbine rotation speed and flow rate variation on the turbine characteristics. The results show that the output power of the cross-flow type hydro turbine with symmetric nozzle shape is obtained mainly from Stage 2. Turbine inlet configuration should be designed to obtain large amount of flow rate because the static pressure and absolute tangential velocity are influenced considerably by inlet flow rate.

  • This paper presents the techniques developed using the line source method to internally generate waves on an arc in a rectangular grid system. For five different types of wave generation layouts, quantitative experiments were conducted under the following conditions: the propagation of waves on a flat bottom, the refraction and shoaling of waves on a planar slope, and the diffraction of waves to a semi-infinite breakwater. Numerical experiments were conducted using the extended mild-slope equations of Suh et al. (1997). The fifth type of wave generation layout, consisting of two parallel lines connected to a semicircle, showed the best solutions, especially for a small grid size.

  • Recent development of computing power and theoretical advances in computational fluid dynamics have made possible numerical simulations of water waves with full Navier-Stokes equations. In this study, an internal wave maker using the mass source function approach was combined with the level set finite element method for generation of waves. The model is first applied to the two-dimensional linear wave generation and propagation. Then, it is applied to the three-dimensional simulation of the same problem. To effectively utilize computational resources and enhance the speed of execution, parallel algorithms are developed and applied for the three-dimensional problem. The results of numerical simulations are compared with theoretical values and good agreements are observed.

  • Internal waves occur at the interface between two layers caused by a seawater density difference. The internal waves generated by a body moving in a two-layer fluid are also related to the generation of surface waves because of their interaction. In these complex flow phenomena, the experimental measurements and experimental set-up for the wave patterns of the internal waves and surface waves are very difficult to perform in a laboratory. Therefore, studies have mainly been carried out using numerical analysis. However, model tests are needed to evaluate the accuracy of numerical models. In this study, the various experimental conditions were evaluated using CFD simulations before experiments to measure the wave patterns of the internal waves and surface waves in a stratified two-layer fluid. The numerical simulation conditions included variations in the densities of the fluids, depth of the two-layer fluid, and moving speed of the underwater body.

  • The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed that a simple floating body was filled with internal fluid of same draft. The characteristics of motions were evaluated in each case of the opening or closing of the upper valves.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance and internal flow characteristics of a cross-flow type hydro turbine for wave power generation. The performance of the turbine is calculated with the variation of rotational speed for 4 types of the nozzle shape using a commercial CFD code. The results show that nozzle shape should be designed considering available head of the turbine. Best efficiencies of the turbine by 4 types of the nozzle shape do not change largely but overall performances varies mainly by the nozzle width. The output power of the cross-flow type hydro turbine changes considerably by the nozzle shape and a partial region of stage 2 in the runner blade passage produces maximum regional output power in comparison with the other runner blade passage areas.
