  • The influence of base paper properties and fiber type on coating penetration was studied in terms of characterization of coating holdout using two types of hand sheets as the base paper which were prepared from thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and hardwood bleached kraft pulp(KP) sized internally with alkyl ketene dimmer (AKD). Laboratory rod draw down coater was used for surface sizing and coating application. Characterization of coating penetration was done by measuring the roughness of the backside of coating layer. The backside of the coating was exposed by dissolving the fibers in a solution of cupriethylenedimine (CEO). Data show that internal sizing of base paper is effective and surface sizing is more effective to prevent coating penetration. Comparing between the two types of base papers, backside roughness of coating layer of TMP sheet is much larger and sizing is more effective to reduce coating penetration than those of KP sheet. From the result of water absorption and sizing degree after surface sizing, it seems that internal sizing slows down molecular diffusion much more than capillary penetration, but surface sizing reduces the capillary penetration. Furthermore, predominant mechanism of water into paper of TMP sheet seems to be capillary penetration, but it is molecular diffusion in the case of KP sheet.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate that the relations of weathering speed and shear strength of granite soil by tracing the weathering depth of granite soil from the very moment of its cutting. The results obtained this follows ; 1) The relationships among Nc, Li and CEC, Li>6%, CEC>14 corresponds to Nc=2~30, and 4%${\phi}$)increases at a standard pressure. 3) And Nc=0~50 corresponds to $27{\sim}50^{\circ}$ of internal fiction angle and to 12~49kPa of cohesion. That is to say, internal friction angle(${\phi}$)corresponds better than cohesion(c). In conclusion, this study suggests that in simplified dynamic cone penetration test a penetration boundary line of 5 centimeters is decided at around Li=4%, CEC=3(meq/100g) which is classified as a completely weathering soil. It also appears that CEC increases as Li increases while Nc decreases.

  • Penetration depth of inorganic waterproofing agent is difficult to assess quantitatively because inorganic waterproofing agent for concrete is not an internal waterproof membrane. However, evaluation of penetration depth of inorganic waterproofing agent is one of the most important evaluation index to secure efficiency in a consistent penetration. Therefore, this paper was proposed penetration depth measurement method of inorganic waterproofing agent for concrete and the penetration depth of the conventional inorganic waterproofing agent have been evaluated through the proposed penetration depth measurement method. As a result of test, the measured penetration depth throught the proposed penetration depth measurement method of inorganic waterproofing agent showed that more than 90% reliability.

  • The results obtained by elasto-plastic analysis method about the displacement, deformation and stability on the soft ground excavation using sheet pile were summarized as follows ; 1. In the case of strut 1 step, the maximum wall displacement value in the first and the second excavation was small, but it increase remarkably after the third excavation and when the excavation depth was 8m, the point of maximum wall displacement was shown 0.75H~0.8H. 2. The value of safety factor(Fs) was increased with increasing of the penetration depth of sheet pile, cohesion and internal friction angle of ground. Safety factor was mostly effected by penetration depth of sheet pile and more effected by cohesion than internal friction angle of ground. 3. Since the deformation of sheet pile of this ground from the results of analysis and measurement increased remarkabaly after 6m excavation depth, it was desirable that the point of strut installation was GL-6m. 4. Safe excavation depth on ground by analysis considered penetration depth, cohesion and internal friction was shown at the table 3.

  • Factors influencing penetration kinetics of PVAm solution into paper were investigated with ultrasonic Penetration Evenness Analyzer (PEA). Paper structure was varied by changing basis weight, freeness of pulp, calendering, number of plies and filler addition and hydrophobicity of paper was varied by adding AKD. Important factors affecting liquid penetration are found to be pore structure and hydrophobicity of paper. Pore structure of paper can be designed by controlling refining degree and filler addition. Hydrophobicity of paper can be controlled by internal sizing.

  • Due to climate change and aging of reservoirs, damage to embankment slopes is increasing. However, the safety diagnosis of the reservoir slope is mainly conducted by visual observation, and the time and economic cost are formidable to apply soil mechanical tests and slope stability analysis. Accordingly, this study presented a predicting method for the compaction and strength characteristics of the reservoir embankment soil using a portable static cone penetration test. The predicted items consisted of dry density, cohesion, and internal friction angle, which are the main factors of slope stability analysis. Portable static cone penetration tests were performed at 19 reservoir sites, and prediction equations were constructed from the correlation between penetration resistance data and test results of soil samples. The predicted dry density and strength parameters showed a correlation with test results between R2 0.40 and 0.93, and it was found to replace the test results well when used as input data for slope stability analysis (R2 0.8134 or more, RMSE 0.0320 or less). In addition, the prediction equations for the minimum safety factor of the slope were presented using the penetration resistance and gradient. As a result of comparing the predicted safety factor with the analysis results, R2 0.5125, RMSE 0.0382 in coarse-grained soil, R2 0.4182 and RMSE 0.0628 in fine-grained soil. The results of this study can be used as a way to improve the existing slope safety diagnosis method, and are expected to be used to predict the characteristics of various soils and inspect slopes.

  • Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) expands inside concrete by absorbing water and contracts as it discharges water. Through this process, concrete can achieve the internal curing effect, but the space occupied by the expanded SAP remains as a void. In this study, the effects of SAP internal curing and voids were evaluated by evaluating the fundamental properties and chloride penetration resistance of SAP mixed concrete. Also, to evaluate the internal curing effect by SAP, the tests were carried out under water and sealed curing conditions, respectively. From the result, the compressive strength of water curing did not differ significantly according to the mixing ratio of SAP. In the case of sealed curing, however, the compressive strength tended to increase as the mixing ratio of SAP increased. The internal curing effect of sealed curing was considered to have influenced the increase in compressive strength. In the case of the chloride diffusion coefficient, the diffusion coefficient tended to decrease as the mixing ratio of SAP increased. In particular, as the sealed curing is applied, the chloride penetration resistance is further improved due to internal curing effect. If the curing conditions are different, it is considered inappropriate to estimate the chloride penetration resistance by the surface electrical resistivity.

  • The internal leaks of RCS pressure boundary valves may cause thermal fatigue crack because of the TASCS in RCS branch line. After experienced unisolable piping failures in several PWR plants, many studies have peformed to understand these phenomena and various methods were applied to ensure the structural integrity of piping. In this paper, the cause of unisolable piping failures and the alternatives to prevent recurrence of failure were reviewed. Also, the severity of piping failure including susceptibility of valve leaks was evaluated for the Westinghouse 2-loop plant. The length of turbulent penetration on RHR inlet piping was measured and, thermal fluid analysis and fatigue analysis was performed for this piping. As a means of ensuring the structural integrity, temperature monitoring and specialized UT and other alternatives were compared for the further application.

  • Porcelain insulators are typically exposed to surface discharge and lightning impulse in service. This study investigates the insulation characteristics of the external and internal discharges of a porcelain insulator with respect to its flashover for a 154 kV transmission line. The experiments are also conducted using a wet flashover test and an impulse test based on the external discharge and the internal penetration, to classify the flashover voltage-time curve of the porcelain insulator. When an impulse with a strength of 2,500 kV/㎲ was applied three times to 6.5 mm ceramic samples, electrical penetration of approximately 70% occurred. The impulse experiment confirmed that the electrical penetration inside the porcelain insulator coincided with the area where the electric field was concentrated. The wet flashover voltage test revealed that the flashover threshold voltage increases by approximately 7% after cleaning of the surface.
