  • In recent years, as selling books on the internet becomes popular, the number of off-line bookstores are rapidly dwindling away. This change on the book market requires, the function and space of the bookstores should be defined again. Now bookstores are the places of experiences on cultures, world-views, and lifestyles around books. The study examines six large bookstores and finds three strategies of space expression as follow. First, Dominicanen bookstore in Maastricht which was built as a church has an expression which contrasts the old and the new as well as the sacred and the profane. Fangsuo bookstore in Chengdu creates a modern underground Sutra Depository. Here, people experience history and religion. Second, Cook & Book in Brussels has nine theme areas, each with a different selection of books, different interior decoration and special food and beverage like a theme park. Zhongshu bookshop in Shanghai has a lattice of nine reading rooms in which each unique design theme is characterized based on each book subject. Third, Cultura Bookstore in Sao Paulo is created to support social interchange. It leads people to the enormous plaza of books where people read books freely and participate in workshops, movies and all kinds of events. Daikanyama Tsutaya Books in Tokyo is composed of three white box-form pavilions which are connected by a 55-meter long aisle, called a magazine street. People walk along the street and choose concierge services as they browse magazines and books. The study finds out three strategies of design in current large bookstores to promote place-experience, which are the story-telling of history and culture, the design of theme parks, and openness for public mingling like plazas and streets. Thus, the study suggests a new paradigm in the design of bookstores in this internet age.

  • Internet lowers the search cost to acquire information about products and sellers price information. Because consumers can easily compare prices among different Internet retailers, the price competition among merchants in Internet has been intensified. For online retailers, it is important to differentiate their sites from competitors based upon services rather than prices. This study investigates which factors influence on consumers price sensitivity in Internet book markets and examines whether consumers price sensitivity has any effect on the type of preferred Internet bookstore (hybrid or pure online book stores). Survey is conducted to empirically investigate the relationship among the various consumer attitudes and price sensitivity. The result shows that price search and price importance have effect on the choice of Internet bookstore. Consumers with higher price sensitivity preferred to purchase books from pure Internet bookstores rather than hybrid (click-and-mortar) bookstores. This study provides an exploratory framework that tries to understand consumer behavior about price sensitivity that might provide some marketing implications to lessen the price competition of Internet retailers.

  • In this paper we study the delivery policy of internet bookstores and recommend the improved policy to increase customer satisfaction and sales revenue. We classify customers into two, the price-sensitive and the delivery time-sensitive, and develop a new shipping method, the unhurried shipping, for the price-sensitive who are reluctant to pay shipping fee for the small purchase but willing to wait extra time for the ordered goods. The customers could get discount on shipping fee by the unhurried shipping but have to accept the longer delivery lead-time. We investigate the possible ways to reduce costs with the prolonged delivery time and show that some costs regarding shipmentand inventory could be saved in order to make up for additional shipping costs for the price-sensitive.

  • This paper examined the structure of internet bookstore users' subjectivity by focusing on their beliefs, values and attitudes.0 methodology was utilized for the study. After constituting 36 Q sample and 28 P sample, data were collect from April 15, 2005 to April 22 2005. The analyses showed 3 types of subjectivity structures. The first one was 'the economic benefit-seeking type.' Those in this type were motivated to use internet bookstores to achieve economic benefits. They paid more attention to the Prices discounted than the web site contents provided by internet bookstores. This type was conspicuously found among college students. The second one was the 'information-seeking type.' People in this category made visits to internet bookstores in order to obtain new information or professional materials. This type was dominantly found among women. The third one was the 'convenience-seeking type.' Those in this type were concerned not only with the accessibility and convenience, but also with such practical issues as delivery, price, applicability, payment, and bonus. This type was conspicuously observed among white collar workers. These findings suggests that in order to make internet bookstores more attractive to users, it is demanded to understand various needs held by users and map out sophisticated marketing strategies on the basis of such a knowledge.

  • This study tries to compare the classification systems of major internet portals and their sub-portals specialized for the children and of major online book stores. It compares and analyzes the major directories of them and suggests recommendations not only to improve their own systems but also to apply to the development for the classification systems for children's library. Some of them are: (1) The system should reflect information requests and use behaviors of the children netizen. (2) It should select the terms reflecting the children's viewpoints and expressions and suggest the guidelines by ages. (3) It should maintain the clear hierarchies and grouping for the accessability and convenience of the users. (4) It will be helpful to establish the categories to mix the subject- or concept-based categories and the activities and objects of the children. (5) It will also be helpful to establish the categories based on the curricula added by those creating the imagination and interest and to subdivide by subject.
