  • In this study, cation and anion exchange process for performance evaluation was conducted. A pilot plant for the ultrpure water production was installed with the capacity of $25m^3/d$. The various production rate and regeneration of ion exchange rate were tested to investigate the design parameters. The test resulst was applied to calculate the operating costs. Changing the flow rate of the ion exchange capacity of the reproduction reviewed the cation exchange process as opposed to the design value is 120 to 164% efficiency, whereas both anion exchange process is 82 to 124% efficiency, respectively. This results can be applied for more large scale plant if the scale up parameters are consdiered. The ion exchange capacity of the application in accordance with the design value characteristic upon application equipment is expected to be needed. In this study, the performance of cation and anion exchange resin process was evaluated with pilot plant($25m^3/d$). The ion exchange capacity along with space velocity and regeneration volume was evaluated. In results, the operation results was compared with design parameters.

  • The outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions in iron-bearing soda lime silicate glass via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is artificially induced in order to increase the amount of ions exchanged during the ion exchange process. The effect of the addition process is analyzed through measuring the bending strength, the weight change, and the inter-diffusion coefficient after the ion exchange process. The glass strength is increased when the outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is added. For the glass subjected to the additional process, the weight change and diffusion depth increase compared with the glass not subjected to the process. The interdiffusion coefficient is also slightly increased as a result of the additional process.

  • Ion exchange behavior and property change of soda-lime-silicate glass by advanced ion exchange process were investigated. Refractive index, specific gravity and optical transmittance were changed similarly to $K^+$ ion penetration depth, and amount of ion exchange increased with the increase of the time and temperature. Especially, thermal expansion decreased greatly because of the structural compaction and residual stress by ion exchange process.

  • Single ion exchange process was used, and the ion exchange behavior and mechanical properties were investigated in substrate glass for flat panel display. In order to study the effects of ion exchange, ion exchange behavior with ion penetration depth, amount of ion exchange, density and thermal expansion was measured according to the time and temperature. The mechanical properties were evaluated by the three point bending test and curvature change, and then the fracture patterns were investigated by optical microscope.

  • We synthesized ion exchange resin that can remove $NO_3\;^-$ selectively rather than $SO_4\;^{2-}$. Ion exchange property of the synthesized ion exchange resin occurred like the following process, $NO_3\;^-$ > $SO_4\;^{2-}$, the efficiency of functional group to remove $NO_3\;^-$ occurred in the process of $NPr_3$ > $NBu_3$ > $NEt_3$ > $NMe_3$ > $NPe_3$ > $N(EtOH)_3$, and the efficiency of functional group to remove $SO_4\;^{2-}$ occurred in the process of $NMe_3$ > $NEt_3$ > $NPr_3$ > $NBu_3$ > $NPe_3$.

  • To enhance the efficiency of water treatment and reduce the extent of membrane fouling, the membrane separation process is frequently preceded by other physico-chemical processes. One of them might be ion exchange. The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of natural organic matter removal achieved with various anion-exchange resins, and to verify their potential use in water treatment prior to the ultrafiltration process involving a ceramic membrane. The use of ion exchange prior to ceramic membrane ultrafiltration enhanced final water quality. The most effective was MIEX, which removed significant amounts of the VHA, SHA and CHA fractions. Separation of uncharged fractions was poor with all the resins examined. Water pretreatment involving an ion-exchange resin failed to reduce membrane fouling, which was higher than that observed in unpretreated water. This finding is to be attributed to the uncharged NOM fractions and small resin particles that persisted in the water.

  • The convergence process utilized both leaching and ion exchange techniques has been investigated for the heavy metals removal in the abandoned mine of Chungyang Province, Korea. The contaminated soil samples by heavy metals from Samkwang mine were analysed by statistical analyses. The highly contaminated soils was initially separated by the flotation process. The selectivity indices were increased with increasing flotation reagents. The selectivity of separation was then improved by the use of both leaching and ion exchange processes in order to extract the heavy metals. The results of this study showed that the higher the sulfuric acid concentration, the leaching rate of heavy metals was increased. The lecheate then was removed by the ion exchange method. The anticipating results might imply that convergence process utilized both leaching and ion exchange techniques would somehow apply for the removal of heavy metals in the abandoned mine.

  • In this study, the slab waveguide was fabricated using potassium-nitride(KNO$_3$) or silver-nitride (AgNO$_3$) molten sources by ion-exchange process. The effective refractive indices of waveguide were measured by Prism-Coupling method. and The characteristics of waveguide(mode dispersion, effective diffusion depth. surface refractive index, diffusion coefficient, and refractive index profile etc,) were investigated by WKB method, In the case of potassium ion-exchange, the computer calculation showed that the refractive index profile of waveguide followed Gaussian function, the surface refractive index increased with ion-exchange time and the effective diffusion depth increased a little as ion-exchange time increased, while the surface refractive index of silver ion-exchanged waveguide decreased with ion-exchange time because of the ion depletion on the surface of waveguide, and the effective diffusion depth seriously with ion-exchange tim. Double ion-exchanged waveguide was fabricated by performing silver ion-exchange after potassium ion-exchange. Double ion-exchanged waveguide had a tight mode binding force since the surface refractive index was larger than single step ion-exchanged waveguide.

  • It is a global challenge to fulfill the demand for clean water at an affordable cost to all the strata of the population. Desalination of seawater as well as brackish water by the membrane separation process is a well-established and cost-efficient method. However, there is still inherent problem of membrane fouling, disposal of the reject as well as a capital-intensive process. While electrodialysis (ED) is a membrane-based separation process in which a driving force is the potential difference. The advantages of ED process are excellent efficiency and low operation cost. Ion exchange membrane (IEM) used in the ED process needs to have higher chemical and thermal stability along with excellent mechanical strength for long-term use without losing its efficiency. The ion exchange capacity of the ED membrane is largely dependent on the conductivity of IEMs. In this review, the modification strategy of the pristine membrane to enhance the stability and ion conductivity of cation exchange membrane (CEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) is discussed.

  • In connection with the ion exchange strengthening on soda-lime-silicate, substrate glass for display use was investigated. In the processing, the temperature was varied during the ion exchange in order to make stress profile and to determine optimum condition. In the present work, we found that the maximum value of strength was 617.8 MPa after an ion exchange process at 470 $^{\circ}C$ for 1h, and then, at 450 $^{\circ}C$ for 24h. Also, the effect of residual stress placed on the near surface was measured by analyzing the number of crack branches and brittleness. This approach allowed us the residual stress profile to be engineered to improve mechanical reliability.
