  • In this paper, we investigate the correlation between the radial ultraviolet color distribution and the shapes of the ultraviolet isophote for elliptical galaxies (M32, NGC 1399) and spiral bulges (of M31, M81) by using their archival UIT images. For M31, M81, and NGC 1399, the radial ultraviolet color distributions show a two-component trend; as the distance from the galactic center increase the color becomes redder in the inner region while it becomes bluer in the outer region. On the other hand, the color of M32 continues to become bluer with the increasing galactocentric distance. We also find, unlike the optical/IR images, significant variations of the position angle and the ellipticity in the ultraviolet isophotes of M31, M81, and NGC 1399 through the inner regions. For M32, the variation is significant in the outer region. Since these variation implies the triaxiality of their intrinsic shapes, we suggest that the early-type galaxies and spiral bulges with a radial color gradient in ultraviolet tend to have a triaxiality. On the other hand, the shape parameter characterized by the fourth order cosine Fourier coefficient of the isophote, a(4)/a, indicates that the systematic deviations of the ultraviolet isophotes of the four galaxies are smaller than $\~0.2\%$ in units of the semi-major axis. The latter result implies that the ultraviolet isophotes of the galaxies have a pure elliptical shape rather than the boxy or disky shapes. Therefore, there is no clear evidence of correlation between the radial ultra-violet color gradient and the boxy/disky shapes of isophotes.

  • If the areas existing in an object are composed of different color sets, the applicable object is segmented into independent areas so it gets to lose the meaning as an object. Therefore, it is required to selectively apply other information on the areas in addition to color information. Based on this methodology, this study, in addition to color information, has also analyzed the shape of isophotes that connect equivalence of brightness as a way of expressing cubic effect. And, through the analyzed information, it has judges independence or dependence of the areas, and then, proposed a way of object separation through significant regional matching of an object.

  • A velocity inhomogeneity, which is the regional preponderence of either radial or tangential orbits, is searched with the new technique proposed by Kim (1992) for Coma, Hydra I, and Abell 2256 cluster of galaxies. Conspicuous inhomogeneities are found in the Coma and A2256 which X-ray isophotes are indicative for their underlying potentials being ellipitcal in shape, Even in their central regions, zones that are dominated by radial orbits are clearly distinguishable from that of the tangential orbits, and defining the cluster 'equator' as the direction of maximum elongation of the X-ray isophotes, radial orbits dominate along this direction whereas tangential orbits dominate the 'polar' zones. Merger events that are evidenced in X-ray observations occur in the equatorial zones of Coma and A2256, suggesting preponderence of radial orbits in the zones, which is in good agreement with their velocity structures. On the other hand, the inhomogeneity in Hydra I turns out to be insignificant in the central regions and this is just what is expected from a cluster whose X-ray isophotes is nearly circular. The velocity distribution in regions further out, however, shows significant inhomogeneity and this seems to support the previous results that this cluster is likely to have substructures and velocity anisotropy.

  • Isophotes and surface brightness distribution were obtained for the late type normal spiral galaxy NGC 7793 (morphological type SA(s)d) which is one of the Sculptor group. The calculated total luminosity $M_{T}$ is obtained as 9.44 and the corrected face on magnitude ${B_T}^{circ}$ is 9.10. The revised distance to this galaxy $\Delta$=3.1 Mpc (de Vaucouleurs and Davoust 1980) is used for calculating the absolute magnitude ${M_T}^{circ}$ = -18.36. From the isophotes, the position angle to the major axis is $101^{circ}$, the mean axial ratio is q=b/a =0.65, and the inclination is i=50$^{circ}$. The concentric indices $C_{21}$=1069 and $C_{32}$ =1.50 are well agreed to the average value of Sd type galaxies.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for restoring trademark and caption areas using an isophote. In our method, the image restoration problem is modeled as an optimization problem, which in our case, is solved by a cost function with isophote constraint that is minimized using a GA The technique creates an optimal connection of all pairs of isophotes disconnected by a caption in the frame. For connecting the disconnected isophotes, we estimate the value of the smoothness, given by the best chromosomes of the GA and project this value in the isophote direction. Experimental results show that the isophote operator worked better than Laplacian operator for image restoration, and the proposed method has a great possibility for automatic restoration of a region in an advertisement scene.

  • Old films or photographs usually have damages from physical or chemical effects, and the damage and digitalization make stain, scratch, scribbling, noise, and digital drop out in frames. Damages include global damage and local damage, and it is well known that local damage restoration is a main factor for improving image quality. Previous researches have focused on impairment localization (esp. for line scratch impairments) and restoration techniques for line scratch, dirt, blob, and intentional scratch. Inpainting is a key technique using partial derivatives to restore damages in images. It does not show good quality for the complex images because it is based on finite order for partial derivatives, and it takes much time complexity. In this paper, we present a modified inpainting scheme, where we use Sobel edge operator's and angle to compute isophotes, and compare our scheme with Bertalmio's scheme. We experiment our scheme with two old Korean films, and Simulation results show that our scheme requires smaller time complexity than Bertalmio's scheme with comparable reconstructed image quality.

  • Image restoration has been carried out by texture synthesis mostly for large regions and inpainting algorithms for small cracks in images. In this paper, we propose a new approach that allows for the simultaneous fill-in of different structures and textures by processing in a wavelet domain. A combination of structure inpainting and patch-based texture synthesis is carried out, which is known as patch-based inpainting, for filling and updating the target region. The wavelet transform is used for its very good multiresolution capabilities. The proposed algorithm uses the wavelet domain subbands to resolve the structure and texture components in smooth approximation and high frequency structural details. The subbands are processed separately by the prioritized patch-based inpainting with isophote energy driven texture synthesis at the core. The algorithm automatically estimates the wavelet coefficients of the target regions of various subbands using optimized patches from the surrounding DWT coefficients. The suggested performance improvement drastically improves execution speed over the existing algorithm. The proposed patch optimization strategy improves the quality of the fill. The fill-in is done with higher priority to structures and isophotes arriving at target boundaries. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated with natural and textured images with varying textural complexions.
