  • In this work, high pressure binary phase equilibria data of carbon dioxide and isopropyl alcohol were obtained by experiment. A static type experimental apparatus was made to measure temperature, pressure and phase equilibria composition. The experimental apparatus was tested by comparing the measured phase equilibria data of the carbon dioxide-isopropyl alcohol system at $80^{\circ}C$ with those of Rodosz. The binary phase behavior data of carbon dioxide-isopropyl alcohol system were measured in range of 41 to 133 bar and at temperatures of 40, 60, 80, 100 and $120^{\circ}C$. The solubility of isopropyl alcohol increases as the temperatures increases at constant pressure. Also, these carbon dioxide-alcohol solute system have critical-mixture curves that exhibit maxima in pressure at temperatures between the critical temperatures of carbon dioxide and isopropyl alcohol. The experimental data obtained in this study were modeled using the statistical associating fluid theory(SAFT) equation of state. A good fit of the data was obtained with SAFT using two adjustable parameters for the carbon dioxide-isopropyl alcohol system.

  • For the safe handling of isopropyl alcohol, the explosion limits were investigated. The lower flash points, upper flash points, fire point, and AITs(autoignition temperatures) by ignition time delay for isopropyl alcohol were experimented. By using literature data, the lower and upper explosion limits of isopropyl alcohol were recommended as 2.0 and 12.0 vol%, respectively. The lower flash points of isopropyl alcohol were experimented $12{\sim}14^{\circ}C$ by using closed-cup tester and $18{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ by using open cup tester. And the upper flash points of isopropyl alcohol was experimented $38^{\circ}C$ by using Setaflash closed-cup tester. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 apparatus was $463^{\circ}C$.

  • Since 1976 the catches of sardine increased rapidly in Korea. However due to the poor facilities of preservation, most sardine landed was used only for fish meal as feeds. The aims of this study are to investigate the processing of sardine as a protein. concentrate and to solve related problems under our particular circumstances. Using the ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, the storage effect for further processing, the optimum processing conditions of sardine protein concentrate and amino acid composition of the product were determined. The utilization of sardine protein ,concentrate as a supplement of bread and noodles was also studied. Chopped sardine meat could be stored in isopropyl and ethyl alcohol without significant deterioration as a raw material for tile further processing. High qualify sardine Protein concentrate could be produced by the method, that is five times five minutes extraction with isopropyl or ethyl alcohol at $80^{\circ}C$ under adequate mixing. In the first step of the extraction, the solvent was added as much as 10 times tile sample amount and the equal volume of additional solvent was also used for the second to fifth step extraction. In the products extracted using isopropyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol, the yields of sardine protein concentrate were $21.2\%$ and $20.3\%$ respectively, and the dry basis contents of protein in the two products were $80.5\%$ and $75.8\%$, the lipid being $0.22\%$ and $0.27\%$ respectively. Isoproyl alcohol was superior to superior alcohol for the extraction of fresh sardine. In amino acid composition of sardine protein concentrate, no difference was found between the products of isopropyl and ethyl alcohol extraction except a little difference in the amount of amino acid between them. In the supplementation of bread and noodles, taste panel showed that supplemented bread and noodles were well accepted when $3\%$ of wheat flour was replaced by sardine protein concentrate.

  • In this study, the colloidal stability and sedimentation behavior of crystalline $TiO_2$ particles (300nm) in various organic solvents have been investigated by means of a backscattered light flux profile (Turbiscan). The backscattered light flux profiles revealed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were readily sedimented in water, methyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol due to a flocculation-induced particle growth, while a particle coalescence and a sedimentation of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were hardly observed in isopropyl alcohol. The migration velocities of the $TiO_2$ particle were measured as around 6.15/min, 12.53 m/min, 6.51m/min, and 0.18m/min for water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol, respectively, showing a remarkably slow migration of the $TiO_2$ particles in isopropyl alcohol.

  • Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution containing the glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent was coated onto the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membrane as the supporter. Pervaporation experiments were carried out to characterize the prepared PVA/PAN composite membrane for water-isopropyl alcohol mixture. The flux and separation factor were measured at 30, 50, $90^{\circ}C$ for the feed mixture of aqueous 85 wt% IPA solution with varying the reaction temperature and composition of coating solutions. Typically the flux showed 1,870 $g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ at $90^{\circ}C$ feed mixture and the coating concentration of 3.5 wt% and the highest separation factor of 804 was obtained at $30^{\circ}C$ feed mixture and the coating concentration of 7 wt% as well.

  • The rates of solvolysis of $cis-[Co(en)_2Cl_2]^+$ complex have been investigated using spectrophotometric method at various pressures up to 1500 bar in several binary-aqueous mixtures(water-methyl alcohol, water-acetone, water-isopropyl alcohol and water-ethylene glycol). The activation volumes obtained from the pressure effect on rate constants were 1.13∼4.44 cm3mole-1 for methyl alcohol, 1.13∼3.59$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for acetone, 0.82∼3.44$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for isopropyl alcohol and 1.13∼2.68cm3mole-1 for ethylene glycol. In case of water-methyl alcohol, in addition to, the rates of solvolysis of this complex were determined in the presence of Fe(Ⅱ) ion and the activation volumes were -0.56∼1.59cm3mole$^{-1}$. The rates of solvolysis of this complex were analyzed by comparing with the results obtained from activation volumes and free energy cycle.

  • The water soluble carboxymethyl-chitin (CM-chitin) has been well known to be very useful to the cosmetic field as a moisturizer, a smoothener, a cell activater and a cleaner for face skin conditioning. In this study, the preparation process of CM-chitin was simplified with elimination of some procedures in the conventional method. The chitin powder was mixed with sodium hydroxide solution. And then a mixture of sodium monochloroacetate (or monochloroacetic acid) and isopropyl alcohol (or a mixed solution with water and isopropyl alcohol) was added to thorough the agitation and the freezing during 16 hours. The CM-chitin with a high degree of substitution by the improved process was obtained.
