Manufacturing Techniques of Wood Materials Seen in the Inscription Sword with Ring Pommel from Geumgwanchong Tomb (금관총 출토 명문 환두대도의 목질부 제작기법 연구)

  • This study examines wood materials used in the inscription sword with ring pommel discovered at Geumgwanchong Tomb in Gyeongju: one set inscribed with the name "King Isaji"(K618) and another inscribed with the phrase "the Sword of King Isaji"(M336). The scabbards of both swords are made of Juglandaceae(Juglandaceae Juglans spp). Two separate wood pieces were joined together to create the hilt and the scabbard of the sword engraved with the name "King Isaji." The hilt of the sword with the inscription "the Sword of King Isaji" was also made by joining two wood pieces.

  • Seven flavonoids were isolated from the BuOH extract of the Stem bark of Platycarya strobilacea (Juglandaceae). On the basis of spectroscopic evidences, the structures of these compounds were established as quercetin, 3', 4', 5', 5, 6, 7-hexahydroxyflavone, morin, myricetin, myricitrin, quercitrin and afzelin, respectively.

  • Anatomical characteristics of genus Platycarya, Juglans and Pterocarya of Juglandaceae occurring in Korea were described and coded based on the IAWA list. Juglandaceae are ring-porous or semi-ring-porous. Vessels have simple perforation plates and helical thickenings in some genus. Axial parenchyma cells were abundant, most apotracheal but rarely paratracheal and rays with 1-5 seriate. Platycarya is ring-porous wood with 2-3 rows of vessels in the pore zone. Helical thickenings were found only in small vessel of latewood. Axial parenchyma were commonly diffuse-in-aggregates or vasicentric. Rays 3-5 seriate. belonging to Kribs' heterogeneous II or III type with frequent occurrence of rhomboidal crystals. Juglans are semi ring-porous with few vessels in $mm^2$ and pores are commonly solitary. Axial parenchyma were diffuse-in-aggregate or marginal. Rays were mostly homocellular and 3-5 seriates. Pterocarya is similar to Juglans in anatomical features but the reticulate parenchyma consisting of 1 layer on transverse section and biseriate rays.

  • A review of taxonomic treatments of the amentiferous plant taxa reveals diverse classification. It appears to be necessary to investigate new characteristics and attempt to determine the significance of these characteristics in terms of amentiferous systematics. Serological techniques have been empolyed in a systematic investigation of selected taxa of the Amentiferae: Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, and Salicaceae. Data by qualitative analysis of pollen proteins, double immunodiffusion and conventional immunoelectrophoresis, have proved to be valuable in delimitation of taxa tested. When the antisera against Alnus hirsuta, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, Q. glauca were tested; Alnus and Betula have the greatest protein similarity to one another; and next to the rest of betulaceous genera. Relatively strong protein similarity obtained with most representatives of Quercus and Fagus when reacted with antisera against Alnus and Betula is very much in contrast to the weak protein similarity obtained for the genera of Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, particularly of Salicaceae Tested with the same antisera. When Quercus antisera were used for various genera, the weakest protein similarity was obtained with Populus.

  • The activity guided fractionation of $CH_2Cl_2$ soluble part of Platycarya strobilacea leaves(Juglandaceae) has led to the isolation of eight active principles, identified as 5-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone(1), ursolic acid(2), gallic acid(3), 4,8-dihydroxynaphthalene $1-O-{\beta}-_D-glucoside(4)$, eriodictyol(5), quercetin $3-O-(2'-O-galloyl)-{\beta}-_D-glucoside(6)$. quercetin $3-O-(2'-O-galloyl)-{\beta}-_D-galactoside(7)$ and quercetin $3-O-{\alpha}-_L-rhamnoside(8)$ by the means of chemical and spectral evidence, respectively.

  • The roots of Juglans mandshurica Maximowicz (Juglandaceae) have been used as a folk medicine for treatment of cancer in Korea. Several naphthoquinones and naphthalenyl glucosides from Juglans species have been reported (1-7). In the course of isolating cytotoxic compounds from the roots of this plant. we have isolated six naphthalene glycosides. four tetralone, one naphthalene carboxylic acid glucoside and nine diarylheptanoids (8-13).   • Radial immunodiffusion, rocket immunoelectrophoresis, and Boyden procedure have been employed as quantitative analysis of pollen proteins in a systematic investigation of selected amentiferous plant taxa. Data presented here are continued and supplementary to the previous qualitative analysis of immunoprecipitin systems for the same purpose. Although the number of taxa tested has been limited, the serological evidence indicates that the Betulaceae has the greatest similarity to the Fagaceae, next to the Juglandaceae, the least to the Salicaceae, when antisera against Alnus hirsuta and Betula platyphylla var. japonica were used for tests. Within the Betulaceae Alnus and Betula show greatly similar affinities together, but less similar to the rest of genera: Carpinus, Carya and Corylus. When antisera against Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. glauca were used for tests, the following decreasing order to serological affinities was obtained: Quercus Alnus, Betula Carpinus, Carya, Corylus Juglans, Pterocarya Populus. Overall serological data come closer to supportint the classification systems of Cronquist, Takhtajan, and Hutchinson; but less of Thorne and Bessey. In addition this investigation indicated that pollen, with its high protein content, provided an excellent source of extractable antigens for serosystematic researches.
