Thermo-physiological Responses of the Lower Grade Elementary School Children -A Comparison Between Japanese and Korean Children- (초등학교 저학년 아동의 체온조절반응 -일본아동과 한국아동의 비교-)

  • In order to clarify the characteristics of the thermo-physiological responses of the child and to understand the influence of the country where the child has grown up on the responses, the thermo-physiological responses of the Japanese children(J group) and the Korean children(K group) were examined. The subject wearing shorts was exposed first to a thermo neutral room$(Ta=28.5^{\circ}C)$ for 1 hour, then transferred to a cold$(Ta=22^{\circ}C)$ or a hot$(Ta=37^{\circ}C)$ room for 1 hour. The experiment was done in the climate chamber of Bunka Women's University in the summer of 1997 for Japan, and in the climate chamber in the Keimyung University in the summer of 1998 for Korea. The subjects consisted of 5 boys and 5 girls aged 7-9 years in Japan and 4 boys and 4 girls aged 7-9 years in Korea. As a result: 1) The rectal temperature increased slightly with a rise in air temperature. K group showed a slightly higher rectal temperature. 2) The skin temperature of the hand and foot decreased conspicuously during cold exposure. It was more in the K group than in the J group. 3) Relative local sweat rates were similar in the two groups at $22^{\circ}C\;and\;28.5^{\circ}C$, while they were considerably different at $37^{\circ}C$. Even perspiration was observed over the whole body in the J group but the perspiration was large in the trunk and low in the extremity in the K group. 4) The heart rate was higher in the J group than in the K group but it increased with the rise of the air temperature in both groups.

Differences in Clinical and Laboratory Findings between Group D and Non-Group D Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Gastroenteritis in Children

  • Purpose: To investigate the differences in clinical features and laboratory findings between group D and non-group D non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) gastroenteritis in children. Methods: A retrospective chart review of children diagnosed with NTS confirmed by culture study was performed. The clinical features and laboratory findings of group D and non-group D NTS were compared. Results: From 2003 to 2012, 75 cases were diagnosed as NTS at our center. The number of group D and non-group D patients was 45 and 30, respectively. The mean age was higher in group D than in non-group D patients (5.1 years vs. 3.4 years, p=0.038). Headaches were more frequently observed (p=0.046) and hematochezia was less frequently observed (p=0.017) in group D than in non-group D NTS gastroenteritis patients. A positive Widal test result was observed in 53.3% of group D and 6.7% of non-group D NTS cases (O-titer, p=0.030; H-titer, p=0.039). There were no differences in white blood cell counts, level of C-reactive protein and rate of antimicrobial resistance between group D and non-group D cases. Conclusion: The more severe clinical features such as headache, fever, and higher Widal titers were found to be indicative of group D NTS gastroenteritis. Additionally, group D NTS gastroenteritis was more commonly found in older patients. Therefore, old age, fever, headache, and a positive Widal test are more indicative of group D NTS than non-group D NTS gastroenteritis. Pathophysiological mechanisms may differ across serologic groups.

Effect of Feeding with Different Source of Carbohydrate and HCA on Body Weight Gain and Lipid Metabolism in Rats (탄수화물 급원에 따른 HCA의 공급이 흰쥐의 체중 및 지질 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding different carbohydrate sources and garcinia cambogia extract(HCA) on body weight and lipid metabolism. Fifty 10-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats weighting $635{\pm}6g$ were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed different experimental diets for 4 weeks. The carbohydrate(CHO) sources of each group were cornstarch(control group, 100% of CHO), fructose(F group and FH group, 25% of CHO) and sucrose(S group and SH group, 25% of CHO). FH group and SH group were fed diets containing 1%(W/W) of HCA. Food intake, body weight gain, and calorie efficiency were not significantly different among the groups. Perirenal fat pad weight of FH group was significantly lower than F group, but epididymal fat pad weight was not different among the groups. Fasting glucose level were not significant among the groups. Plasma lipid profile of FH or SH group was slightly lower than F or S group, respectively. The degree of difference of plasma lipid level was greater between F and FH group than those of between S and SH group. In liver, total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol level were slightly higher in F group than S group, and tended to be lower in FH group than F group, but tended to be higher in SH group than S group. Liver citrate lyase activity were not significant among the groups. These results suggest that HCA is potential material for reduction of body weight and improvement of plasma lipid profiles. But, there was no difference between fructose intake with HCA and sucrose intake with HCA in reduction of body weight and lipid metabolism.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate flexure strength of composite resin inlay according to heat treatment and duration in comparasion with visible light-cured resin. In this study, materials were used 1 visible light-cured resin and 3 kinds of composite resin inlays. Control group was visible light cured resin (Photo Clearfil Posterior) and experimental groups were composite resin inlays (Brilliant Dentin, Brilliant Enamel and Clearfil CR Inlay). Experimental groups were divided 3 groups: First group was Brilliant Dentin and second group was Brilliant Enamel and -third group was Clearfil CR Inlay. Used experimental groups were calculated flexural strength according to heat treatment and duration. The following results were obtained: 1. Experimental groups were higher flexural strength than control group. 2. At $100^{\circ}C$ when heat treatment carried out 7 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn and when heat treatment carried out 15 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn but no difference was showed between first and second group. 3. At $125^{\circ}C$ when heat treatment was carried out 7 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn and when heat treatment was carried out 15 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, first group, second group in turn but no difference was showed between first and second group. 4. In spite of heat treatment and duration the third group was highest flexural strength in the others groups.

An Efficient Renewal Mechanism of Group Key Employing the Fiat-Shamir Method on Mobile Communications

  • Renewal of the group key on the mobile communication needs it can be not re-shared by all members of the group with the exception of excluded members but also prevented from making a fraudulent use of group key due to leakage of security information for terminal. In this paper, we propose an efficient renewal mechanism of group key in order for all members of the group to be able to get digital information and to perform the renewal of group key employing the Fiat-Shamir method. It can guarantee the security of a group key since a terminal renews a group key by using security information of an excluded terminal and the previous group key.

Sesaminol Glucosides Improve Cognitive Deficits and Oxidative Stress in SAMP8 Mice

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of sesaminol glucosides (SG) on age-related cognitive deficits in senescence-accelerated mice P8 (SAMP8). Male SAMP8 (9 month-old) were randomly divided into 3 groups and received diets containing 0, 0.25, or 0.5% SG for 12 weeks. Step-through latency of the SAMP8 control group was higher than that of the senescence-accelerated resistant mice (SAMR) group, whereas it was lowered in the SG-supplemented group on the passive-avoidance test. In the Morris water maze, the escape latency of the SAMP8 control group was increased and recovered in the 0.5% SG-supplemented group. The SG supplementation significantly decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in brains of the SAMP8. On the other hand, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase activities in brains of the SG supplemented group decreased compared with the SAMP8 control group. These results suggest that SG could attenuate cognitive deficits caused by aging through its antioxidant capacity.
