  • Environmental changes, especially global climate change, are creating new challenges to the development of the Arctic regions, which have substantial energy resources. And attention to offshore structures has increased with oil and gas development. The structural impact response of an explosion-resistant profiled blast walls normally changes when it operates in low temperatures. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the structural response of blast walls in low temperature and suggest useful guidelines for understanding the characteristics of the structural impact response of blast walls subjected to hydrocarbon explosions in Arctic conditions. The target temperatures were based on the average summer temperature ($-20^{\circ}C$), the average winter temperature ($-40^{\circ}C$) and the coldest temperature recorded (approximately $-68^{\circ}C$) in the Arctic. The nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to design an explosion-resistant profiled blast wall for use in Arctic conditions based on the behaviour of material properties at low temperatures established by performing a tensile test. The conclusions and implications of the findings are discussed.

  • Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI) conducted an offshore geotechnical investigation for the Eardo Ocean Research Station with the help of the Fugro International Limited at a site location approximately 152 km away from Mara Island, Korea. The primary purpose of the geotechnical investigation was to obtain information on soil and foundation conditions, and to develop foundation design data for a fixed offshore observation platform. This paper discussed the details of the geotechnical investigation and the foundation design recommendations for the Ocean Research Station. Clear recommendations were proposed for the foundation type of driven pile considering the existing soil conditions.

  • Environmental changes, especially global climate change, are creating new routes to reduce a shipping service distance in Arctic area. The Arctic routes are shorter than 60% of existing ways Panama or Suez canal). For this reason, ship owners prefer to navigate in Arctic area and a transportation of goods though the Arctic area is increasing. But the low temperature in Arctic condition changes the material properties. Especially, the material will be brittle and strength will increase. And an ultimate strength analysis of ship stiffened panels is changed depending on temperatures. In present study, the ultimate strength analysis of stiffened panels in double hull oil tankers is performed under various low temperatures with the material properties obtained by tensile coupon test. The analytical method as named ALPS/ULSAP was used for analysis method and 6 kinds of temperature (20, 0, -20, -40, -60 and $-80^{\circ}C$) were considered to investigate the effect of Arctic conditions.

  • In offshore structures, fire is one of the most important hazardous events. The concern of fires has recently been reflected in the rules and quantified risk assessment based design practice. Within the framework of quantified risk assessment and the management of offshore installations, therefore, more refined computations of the consequences or hazardous action effects due to fire are required. To mitigate fire risk, passive fire protection(PFP) is widely used on offshore structures. This study presents methods for a nonlinear structural response analysis considering the PFP effects under fires. It is found that a structural response analysis is most likely to use valuable technology for the optimization and design of offshore structures with PFP. Thermal and structural response analyses have been performed using LS-DYNA and FAHTS/USFOS. The results of these structural response analyses are compared with each other.

  • A series of numerical simulations on the several types of breakwaters on the foundation systems utilizing buoyancy were carried out in plane-strain conditions using the modified Cam-Clay model and the Biot's consolidation theory. Improved foundation system by the replacement of original ground with light weighted material, expandable poly-styrene (called below EPS) and several foundation systems with buoyant cells were used. From the results of numerical simulations we found that the foundation systems utilizing buoyancy are efficient to reduce the maximum consolidation settlements without reducing lateral safety.

  • Structural inertial interaction is a representative the effect of dynamic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI), which leads to a relative displacement between soil and foundation, period lengthening, and damping increasing phenomena. However, for a system with a significantly heavy foundation, the dynamic inertia of the foundation influences and interacts with the structural seismic response. The structure-to-foundation mass ratio (MR) quantifies the distribution of mass between the structure and foundation for a structure on a shallow foundation. Although both systems exhibit the same vertical factor of safety (FSv), the MR and corresponding seismic responses attributed to the structure and foundation masses may differ. This study explored the influence of MR on the permanent deformation and seismic response of soil-foundation-structure system considering SFSI via numerical simulations. Given that numerous dimensionless parameters of SFSI described its influence on the structural seismic response, the parameters, except for MR and FSv, were fixed for the sensitivity analysis. The results demonstrated that the foundation inertia of heavier foundations induced more settlement due to sliding behavior of heavily-loaded systems. Moreover, the structural inertia of heavier structures evidently exhibited foundation rocking behavior, which results in a more elongated natural period of the structure for lightly-loaded systems.

  • As essential element of designers, foundation studies program helps student deal with the individual expression of imagination and variety of correspondence for solving design problem through the understanding of 2-D, 3-D basic design elements, principals, structures. Liberal art and foundation studio courses provides embodiment and settlement of design principal through the foundation studies expand to experiences systematically and deeply. After the Industrialization, foundation studies have developed from Bauhaus in German, the courses have been progressing and systematizing with the demand of time in United States. Growth of Industrialization, expanded design areas departmentalized to various of fields, then the segmentation of foundation courses tend to important than basic design courses. The introduction of information era, the appearance of computer is placed as a tool of design development and added to applied basic courses. This study is intended to know how to change the leading foundation courses in United State due to the revitalization of industrialization and information through the research and analyse to foundation design education curriculums. As a result, most of design school in United States provide drawing, 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D courses included 3-D design element as a basic studies and provide to students introduction to fundamental principal of design concept and communication in both theoretical and applied form. Also though the history, literature, critic, research and survey courses provide students to organize fundamental of systematical logic and understanding design system.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of foundation stability according to decrease of the foundation contact area on the ground. In order to carry out this research, the experimental and numerical studies are performed. In the experimental study, the carefully controled laboratory model tests are carried out with different foundation size and types. The model test results are analyzed and interpreted by analytical and numerical calculation in order to verify both results obtained from experimental and numerical studies. It is clearly found from the results that the foundation stability is considerably reduced when the foundation contact area ratio is less than 75%. This research may be very useful to develop the economical foundation type.
