  • Objectives This study aimed to analyze the trends of Korean traditional medicine treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods We searched clinical studies used Korean traditional medicine for idiopathic scoliosis in 4 Korean online databases 'Koreanstudies Information Service System', 'Earticle', 'Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System', 'Research Information Sharing Service'. We selected 18 studies and analyzed their characteristics according to author, publication year, number/sex/age of patient, treatment period, intervention, outcome measure and result. Results Eighteen case report studies were selected by criteria and randomized controlled trials were not found. The most frequently used therapy was Chuna therapy. Cobb's angle was most commonly used outcome measure. Conclusions In this study, we reviewed studies used Korean traditional medicine treatments for idiopathic scoliosis. However, evidence is limited because all selected studies were case reports. This study suggests that further clinical studies are needed to provide higher evidence about Korean traditional medicine treatment for idiopathic scoliosis.

  • The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of Megadose pharmacopuncture with Korean Medicine Treatment on patients who were diagnosed as ThoracoLumbar Junction Syndrome. Megadose pharmacopuncture was proceeded on 4 patients who received treatment at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ Korean Medicine Hospital from November, 2016 to Februrary, 2017. In addition, We also kept a record of NRS, ODI, and EQ-5D on the day of admission and discharge to find out the differences between initial and final figures. As a result, Megadose parmacopuncture showed a significant effect on alleviating pain on patients with ThoracoLumbar Junction Syndrome. There was a significant decrease in NRS, ODI scores. Not only did the scores of NRS and ODI decrease significantly, but also the figures of EQ-5D increased significantly as well. To be specific, the mean of NRS and ODI dcreased from 10 to 1.75 and 61.87 to 12.78 while the mean of EQ-5D increased from 0.258 to 0.850. This research suggests Megadose pharmacopuncture with Korean Medicine Treatment could be a remedy for ThoracoLumbar Junction Syndrome.

  • A 53-year-old male who had received surgery on his right ankle joint 10 years previously was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome the following year. Despite various treatments (sympathetic nerve-block medication, pain relievers, corticosteroids, nerve blocks, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) over the years there was no improvement in his symptoms. Recently the patient was admitted to a Korean medicine hospital where he received treatment (acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal treatment) and his symptoms gradually showed improvement. The patient was concurrently on psychiatric medicine, antihistamine medication, and opioids for pain (when necessary). A decrease in numeric rating scale, Oswestry disability index scores, and an increase in the Korean version of the 5-level EuroQol-5 dimension score showed symptom improvement within 36 days. This study suggests complex Korean medicine treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome may result in a reduction in pain and improved quality of life.

Methods We searched the studies on Eastern-Western integrative medicine in 5 Korean web database (NDSL, KoreanTK, KISS, OASIS, DBPIA). 66 research papers we founded. Results 13 papers were published at 2010. The studies on Eastern-Western integrative medicine were mainly published in the Journal of Society of Preventive Korean Medicine. 24 papers were case report, include 7 studies on neurology, 4 studies on each oncology and dermatology, 2 studies on each gastroenterology and ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, 1 study on each obstetrics and gynecology and endocrinology and nephrology. In 24 case reports, 7 kinds of Eastern medicine treatment method and 4 kinds of Western medicine treatment method were existed. In case reports, medication (100%), herbal medicine, acupuncture (95.8%), moxibustion (58.3%), cupping, infusion solution (25%), pharmacopuncture (20.8%), physical therapy (12.5%), laser, injection, rehabilitation (8.3%) were used. Conclusions In this study, we analyzed the trends of Eastern-Western integrative medicine in korea from 2010 to 2017. There were various studies about Eastern-Western integrative medicine. In case reports, Eastern-Western integrative medicine tend to concentrated on treatment not diagnosis. Not only treatment but also diagnosis is needed in Eastern-Western integrative medicine studies.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment and the Muscle Energy Technique on foot drop through a case study with a patient with common peroneal neuropathy. Methods : A patient with severe foot drop after an ankle sprain was hospitalized and treated with acupuncture and traditional medicine and the Muscle Energy Technique. The effect of the treatment was evaluated with the Numeric Rate Scale(NRS), dorsiflexion angle evaluation, and the Manual Muscle Test (MMT). Results : The results of the NRS, dorsiflexion angle evaluation and MMT showed greatly improvementwith results changing from 8 to 2, 0 to 15, and Grade 2 to Grade 4, respectively. Conclusions : This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment and the Muscle Energy Technique could be effective treatments for foot drop with common peroneal neuropathy. However further clinical studies are needed to establish a definite conclusion.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between cervical spine lateroflexion and upper limb numbness after whiplash injury by traffic accident. Methods : Outpatients who visited Jaseng korean medicine hospital after traffic accident took cervical MRI. Patients who had Normal disc and bulging disc were reviewed to measure the cervical lateroflexion by C2-C7 Cobb's angle & scalenus muscle's length through neutrality AP X-ray views. For statistics, we used SPSS version 18.0 for windows. Results : Groups classified into difference of scalenus muscle's length were showen statistical significance than into cobb's angle. Means of numbness group's length difference are $4.18{\pm}2.26mm$ and that of non-numbness group is $1.59{\pm}1.17mm$. Unilateral numbness group had greater angle and longer of length's difference than non-numbness group. Conclusions : The more severe the lateroflexion of the upper extremity numbness occurs well. Group classifed into difference of scalenus muscle's length has more tendency of occurrence of upper limb numbness than that into cobb's angle. And upper limb numbness occurs more frequently at the same direction of lateroflexion.
