  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate sleep, fatigue, and the level of health promoting behaviors in Korean army soldiers. The factors influencing on health promoting behaviors of soldiers were also identified. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used. Data was collected from 269 soldiers in four military units of Korea in July 2015. Verran and Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II were used. Results: The health promoting behaviors were significantly different by perceived health status (p<.001) and presence of fatigue (p<.001). There were significant correlations between quality of sleep, fatigue, and health promoting behaviors of the subjects. In a multiple linear regression analysis, the level of health promoting behaviors were lower in the subjects with high level of fatigue (p<.001) and with fair perceived health status (p=.003). Conclusion: In order to increase health promoting behaviors of soldiers, it takes into account of soldiers' fatigue and perceived health status. Environmental arrangement for soldiers for the break time is needed urgently to decrease their fatigue as well as to improve their sleep quality.

  • This study was done to find out the difference in vowel length between the English language produced by American soldiers and KATUSA soldiers. Though English pronunciation by Koreans shows different features in many ways, I focused on English vowel length of KATUSA soldiers. I wanted to know if KATUSA soldiers, when compared with American soldiers, showed a foreign accent when they produced English diphthongs. The reason I wanted to deal with English diphthongs is that most Koreans have difficulty in pronouncing them since they do not understand the concept of diphthongs. Therefore I selected five English diphthongs, /aI/, cI/, /au/, /eI/, /ou,/as/ the experimental object, and I tried to find out the foreign accent of them. In this study I also tried to find out the vowel lengths in relation to their utterance positions. I investigated the difference of the English diphthong length between American and KATUSA soldiers using information gathered from experimental results.

In the oral health behavior, the most of the soldiers(46.7%) and the officers(58.1%) answer that they thought to be in good oral health. Regarding the actual conditions of oral health care, it is investigated that the most of the soldiers brush their teeth twice a day(46.7%) and the officers three times a day(58.1%). With the oral health knowledge, the officers get a point of $2.89{\pm}1.36$, which is higher than the soldiers'($2.47{\pm}1.27$), and the person who have an experience to take an oral health education, getting a point of $2.83{\pm}1.22$, have higher level of the knowledge than the unexperienced with $2.48{\pm}1.31$(p<0.5). • Inadequate military soldiers cause military fatigue and rejection such as reduced confidence in the military and combat power. The military developed and applied a self-adopting test as a psychological test system to identify soldiers who are not fit to serve in the military in advance and prevent accidents. In this paper, we propose the ontology design process to be used for identifying accident concerns and implement the behavioral patterns and symptoms of maladjustment soldiers as ontology. The ontology design process is validated consistency and suitability as a result of the performance evaluation of ontology implemented. Through ontology design for identifying maladjustment soldiers, it is expected to play an effective role in preventing accidents by providing objective criteria and sharing of information on accident concerns.

  • This study investigates soldiers' and civilians' interest in and behaviors toward cosmetics and skin beauty. Responses to a self-administered questionnaire were collected from 150 soldiers and 156 civilians residing in Chung-chung Province, Korea. The mean age of the respondents was $21.9{\pm}1.8$. More than 90% used skin toner and lotion products, and more than 50% used sunblocks and foam cleansers. Soldiers were more likely to use essence (p<.001) and after-shave (p<.01) products than civilians. In addition, soldiers were more likely to use carrier cosmetics than their counterparts (p<.001~p<.05). Soldiers were more likely to be concerned about their skin (p<.01) and unsatisfactory environments for skin care (p<.001), more likely to engage in skin care behaviors (p<.01), and less likely to have skin knowledge than civilians (p<.001). There was a negative relationship between skin knowledge and skin care behaviors (p<.01). The level of interest in appearance was correlated with that in skin (p<.001). The number of skin related concerns was positively correlated with unsatisfactory environments for skin care (p<.001). Concerns over appearance (p<.001), skin (p<.001), and unsatisfactory environments for skin care (p<.05) were positively correlated with skin care behaviors. The results suggest the necessity of providing a diverse and differentiated range of cosmetics to meet the needs of soldiers and men, particularly the former, according to the differences in their environments.

Results : Soldiers dependance on nicotine according to the smoking frequence showed positive correlation(p<0.001). The respondents who had bad breath and bleeding gum had smoked for a relative correlation with how long they had smoked. Among the content of the dental health care program that respondents wished to undergo, dental whitening was the most attractive topic(37.9%) and decayed teeth was the most important part in dental health care(25.2%). The correlation coefficient between the dependancy on nicotine the less effort they made to improve their dental health(p<.05). • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the health status of Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) soldiers changed after one year of military service. Methods: We selected 483 ROKAF soldiers from the 11 749 recruits who participated in the 2011 physical examination. The selected soldiers underwent another physical examination in 2012 for advancement to senior airman. Data from 2011 and 2012 were merged. To collect data on lifestyle, a questionnaire was sent to all included subjects via the military intranet e-mail service. Results: The percentage of recruits with an abnormal alanine transaminase level (normal range <40 IU/L) decreased from recruitment (13.7%) to the following year (2.7%). Moreover, the percentage of obese soldiers (body mass index ${\geq}25kg/m^2$) decreased from recruitment (20.5%) to the following year (10.4%). There was a significant change in mean duration of exercise carried out each day before ($0.8{\pm}1.3$ hours) and after ($1.0{\pm}0.7$ hours) joining the ROKAF service. Conclusions: These ROKAF soldiers were generally in good health before and after joining the armed service. After one year of military service, the health status of most soldiers improved, especially with respect to body mass index and alanine transaminase level.
