Cost competitive Pixel Structures for Mobile PVA LCDs

  • We have designed cost competitive pixel structures for high performance mobile PVA LCDs. These new structures significantly bring down the price by the use of a conventional polarizer for lowest possible cost. A 4.3" prototype based on these techniques was built, achieving the world's highest mobile display contrast ratio of 1200:1, while maintaining wide viewing angle with no loss of transmittance

  • LCD panel need BLU(Back Light Unit) that is outside source of light because can not emit light voluntarily. BLU is used in LCD module and is used in tester that examine LCD panel's badness. Lately, BLU had changed from CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) to LED(Light-Emitting Diode) fast. CCFL need extra-high tension power and produce much heat and is difficult to keep fixed brightness. LED is few electric power wastage and keeps fixed brightness. But, BLU that is used to detector that examine the LCD module is using CCFL until recently. This paper develops LED BLU that can examine LCD panel's badness. Also, this manufactures LED BLU to 24 inch size to examine all LCD panels(12~24 inch), and develops so that LED BLU may operate according to LCD panel's size.

  • Visual perception experiments were conducted to determine the acceptable limit of the contrast ratio of LCD TV under the watching condition. The results showed that the corresponding contrast ratio should be below 10,000:1 at the 3H(height of screen) distance in the living room environment.

  • We developed a novel PVA pixel design for mobile application with excellent off-axis image quality and optical performance by introducing Active Level Shift technology and optimizing pixel structure. Our new pixel design enables better off-axis image quality without sacrificing other optical properties compared with a conventional mPVA structure.

  • We have developed the VIC (Viewing-angle Image Control) TFT-LCD, which can change viewing-angle from $80^{\circ}$ to $170^{\circ}$. This display has the same thickness and weight as existing TFT-LCD, because it is made of only single LC cell without additional components. Moreover, we developed ways to protect effectively the displayed information in narrow viewing angle mode.

  • We have performed Liquid Chromatography-Solid Phase Extraction-NMR (LC-SPE-NMR) analysis for liquid crystalline mixture and elucidated the structures of selected components by NMR spectra. Combining the results of one-dimensional 1H experiments as well as homonuclear and heteronuclear two-dimensional experiments, we could analyze the molecular structure of the liquid crystal singles whose structure had not been interpretable by mass spectrometry alone.

  • 6Mask CMOS process in low temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (poly-Si TFTs) has been developed and verified by manufacturing a 6Mask CMOS AMLCD panel. The novel 6Mask CMOS process is realized by eliminating the storage mask, gate mask and via open mask of conventional structure.

  • Local dimming driving has advantages in reducing power consumption and improving contrast ratio(CR). In an LED backlight unit(BLU), many small LED blocks are implemented in 2-dimmensional space, and luminance of the blocks is controlled by a local dimming algorithm. However, such a BLU can induce various recognizable artifacts. A new novel algorithm is proposed for exact block luminance calculation to correct local dimming artifacts. Also we discuss modified low-gray-level dimming to achieve much aggressive power saving in a local dimming BLU system.

  • The world largest 21.3" LTPS LCD has been successfully developed using SLS crystallization technology. Integration of gate circuit, transmission gate and level shifter was successfully performed in a large area display. Uniform and high performance of high quality grains of SLS technology make it possible to realize a uniform large size LTPS TFT-LCD with half the number of data driver IC's that is typically used in a-Si LCD. High aperture ratio of 65 % was achieved using an organic inter insulating method which lead to a high brightness of 500 cd/$cm^2$.
