  • Recently, the use of natural gas has steadily increased due to its economical advantage and increased demand of clean energy uses. Accordingly, construction of LNG storage tanks is also increased. Secure of the stability of LNG tanks storage requires high technology as natural gas is stored in a liquid state for efficiency of storage. When a cryogenic LNG fluid leaks on ground due to a defect in LNG tank, damage is expected to be significant. Many researchers evaluated the critical and negative effects of LNG leakage, but there is limited research on the effect of cryogenic fluid leakage on the ground supporting LNG tanks. Therefore, in this study, the freezing expansion of the ground during cryogenic LNG fluid leakage was evaluated considering various outflow situations and ground conditions. The LNG leakage scenarios were simulated based on numerical analyses results varying the surcharge load, temperature boundary conditions, and soil types including freeze-sensitive soil. Consequently, short and long term ground temperature variations after LNG leakage were evaluated and the resulting ground behavior including vertical displacement behavior and porosity were analyzed.

  • In this numerical study, the leakage safety of the LNG tank in which is constructed by membrane inner tank-plywood-polyurethane form-plywood-prestressed concrete structures has been presented for four leakage analysis models. The LNG leak criterion of the tank wall with a storage capacity of $200,000\;m^3$ is analyzed based on the thermal resistance technique. This means that if the cryogenic temperature of a leaked LNG is detected at the outer side of the PC wall, it may be leaked through the wall thickness of the tank. The calculated results based on the thermal resistance method between two walls show that the plywood, PUF, and another plywood walls may block the leakage of the leaked LNG even though the strength of these walls is already collapsed by a leaked LNG pressure. But, the leaked LNG may pass the thickness of the prestressed concrete wall for a period of elapsed time even though the PC outer tank supports the leaked LNG pressure. Thus, the PC outer tank may extend the leakage time of a leaked LNG.

  • In this study, one calculated the range of damage to the combustion characteristics according to the composition of LNG and the size of leaking holes, and analyzed the damage effect in case of leakage accidents caused by pipe damage in the re-gasification process for the LNG supply system. In order to confirm the combustion characteristics according to LNG composition, there was no significant difference in the result of risk analysis by LNG-producing areas. However, the higher the methane content of the components, the lower the risk of flash fire, hazardous areas of overpressure due to explosion, and thermal radiation damage caused by jet fire. In addition, one investigated the effect of leakage, holes, and ruptures on the risk range and explosions according to the size of the pipe-leakage hole. Also, the influence of overpressure and the range of damage from radiant heat could be predicted. One confirmed the effect of LNG composition and pipe-leakage size on fire and explosion.

  • The leakage of cryogenic LNG through cracks in the insulation membrane of an LNG carrier causes the hull structure to experience a cold spot as a result of the heat transfer from the LNG. The hull structure will become brittle at this cold spot and the evaporated natural gas may potentially lead to a hazard because of its flammability. This paper presents a computational model for the LNG flow and heat diffusion in an LNG insulation panel subject to leakage. The temperature distribution in the insulation panel and the speed of gas diffusion through it are simulated to assess the safety level of an LNG carrier subject that experiences a leak. The behavior of the leaked LNG is modeled using a multiphase flow that considers the mixture of liquid and gas. The simulation model considers the phase change of the LNG, gas-liquid multiphase interactions in the porous media, and accompanying rates of heat transfer. It is assumed that the NO96-GW membrane storage is composed of glass wool and plywood for the numerical simulation. In the numerical simulation, the seepage, heat diffusion, and evaporation of the LNG are investigated. It is found that the diffusion speed of the leakage is very high to accelerate the evaporation of the LNG.

  • Recently, various dynamic risk analysis methods have been suggested for estimating the risk index by predicting the possibility of accidents and damage. It is necessary to maintain and support the safety system for responding to accidents by continuously updating the probability of accidents and the results of accidents, which are quantitative standards of ship risk. In this study, when a LNG leakage that may occur in the LN G Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS) room during LN G bunkering operation, a reliability physical model was prepared by the change in monitoring data as physical parameters to estimate the accident probability. The scenario in which LNG leakage occur were configured with FT (Fault Tree), and the coefficient of the covariate model and Weibull distribution was estimated based on the monitoring data. The possibility of an LNG leakage, which is the top event of FT, was confirmed by changes in time and monitoring data. A method for estimating the LNG leakage based on the reliability physical analysis is proposed, which supports fast decision-making by identifying the potential LNG leakage at the accident.

  • We have developed an embedded based environment sensing module with high-resolution temperature, humidity and gas sensors to detect gas leakage under the condition of LNG injection. The developed sensing module have linearity with gas concentration. We have confirmed the developed sensing module could detect LNG gas concentration of 5 cmol/mol and 15 cmol/mol, which are gas concentration at risk of explosion. The response time of the developed module was fast within 8 seconds. Therefore it can be used to detect LNG gas leakage.

  • Building above-ground membrane LNG storage tanks have been recently actively reviewed because they have advantages in ease of large capacity, environmental friendliness, and low possibility of gas leakage of the inner tank (slow increase of leakage speed). In this paper, the safety of membrane LNG storage tanks was ensured through comparative risk assessment of full-containment LNG storage tanks and membrane LNG storage tanks by using Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Risk assessment results showed that both types of tanks have very similar level of risk except for the membrane storage tanks without additional safety equipments (early model).

  • In this paper, the FE analysis has been presented for the leakage safety of the membrane LNG storage tank based on the thermal resistance effects between the insulation panel and prestressed concrete structure. The FEM calculated results show that the leakage safety of plywood and polyurethane materials does not guarantee any more due to a strength failure of the insulation structure. But the PC structure of outer tank may delay leaked LNG of 10 days even though the inner tank and insulation structure are simultaneously failed. This means that the membrane LNG storage tank may be safe because of the stiffness of the outer tank.

  • This study describes the development of a 1-inch cryogenic glove valve for an LNG pumping system and localization development achieved through the performance test. The cryogenic valve used in the LNG pumping system plays an important role in maintaining a flow rate by LNG transportation. This trial manufactured goods, which was achieved through reverse engineering and developing the assembly process. The result of the leak test satisfied the internal pressure condition using the 78-bar normal temperature test and maintained the anti-leakage condition. Also, the result of the cryogenic leak test (BS 6364: low temperature test procedure) maintained anti-leakage at -196 and 52 bar, which satisfied the test standards.
