A Study on Implementation of a VC-Merge Capable High-Speed Switch on MPLS over ATM (ATM기반 MPLS망에서 VC-Merge 가능한 고속 스위치 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we implement a high-speed swatch tilth the function for label integration to enhance the expansion of networks using the label space of routers efficiently on MPLS over ATM networks. We propose an appropriate hardware structure to support the VC-merge function and differentiated services simultaneously. In this paper, we use the adaptive congestion control method such as EPD algorithm in carte that there is a possibility of network congestion in output buffers of each core LSR. In addition, we justify the validity of the proposed VC-merge method through simulation and comparison to conventional Non VC-merge methods. The proposed VC-merge capable switch is modeled in VHDL. synthesized, and fabricated using the SAMSUNG 0.5um SOG process.

  • Recently, as Internet and its services grow rapidly, IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) introduced a new switching mechanism, MPLS(Multi-Protocol Label Switching), to solve the problem of the scalability in Internet backbone. In this paper, we implemented the LSR loaded with VC-merging function, which causes LSR's management cost to be significantly reduced. We propose a new VC-merge function which supports differentiated services. In case of network congestion in the output buffer of each core LSR, appling link polices to the output modules of the LSR using the EPD algorithm can prevent the buffer from being overflowed. Simulation was performed for Diffserv by using multiple traffic models and investigated the impact of VC-merge method compared to non VC-merge method. The proposed switch is modeled in VHDL and fabricated using the SAMSUNG $0.5{\mu}m$ SOG process.

  • The Internet with conventional routing scheme cannot meet user demands driven from drastic growth in the Internet user and various service and traffic type. MPLS(Multi Protocol Label Switching) was introduced to the Internet fur solution to resolve this problem. MPLS is a paradigm to integrate higher layer’s software routing functions including layer-3 routing with layer-2 switching. But, the exponential growth of Internet traffic brings out of label space. One scalable solution to cope with this problem is to introduce flow merge technique, i. e. a group of flows is forwarded using the same label. Specially, IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) recommends that ATM based MPLS system may include VC merge function, so it is scalable to increase of internet traffic. We implemented the MPLS LER system that includes the look-up and forwarding function in incoming path and VC merging function and limited traffic management function in outgoing path. This paper describes the implementation of the LER’s outgoing parts.

  • 레이어2 스위칭과 레이어3 라우팅의 통합 모델로써 MPLS(Multi-Protocol Label Switching) 환경에서 ATM LSR(Label-Switching Routers)은 백본망에서의 고속 전송이 가능하여 현재의 라우터 구조로써 제안되어지고 있다. MPLS가 코어 라이터로써 적용이 될 경우 확장성을 위해 label merging이라는 기술이 필요하다. VC(Virtual Circuit) merging은 ATM LSR에서 많은 IP 라우터를 하나의 라벨로 매핑을 시키며 수천 개의 목적지에 전송할 수 있는 확장성 있는 매핑 기술이다. VC merging은 같은 목적지인 다른 패킷들 간의 셀들의 섞임을 방지하기 위해 재 조합 버퍼가 요구된다. 재 조합 버퍼 사용시 일시적인 체증 현상이 발생하며 Non-VC merging과 비교시 많은 셀 손실과 많은 버퍼를 요구하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 RED(Random Early Detection) 알고리즘을 적용하여 VC merging이 필요한 버퍼의 요구량과 셀 손실을 줄였다.

Recognition and Tracking of Moving Objects Using Label-merge Method Based on Fuzzy Clustering Algorithm (퍼지 클러스터링 알고리즘 기반의 라벨 병합을 이용한 이동물체 인식 및 추적)

  • We propose a moving object extraction and tracking method for improvement of animal identification and tracking technology. First, we propose a method of merging separated moving objects into a moving object by using FCM (Fuzzy C-Means) clustering algorithm to solve the problem of moving object loss caused by moving object extraction process. In addition, we propose a method of extracting data from a moving object and a method of counting moving objects to determine the number of clusters in order to satisfy the conditions for performing FCM clustering algorithm. Then, we propose a method to continuously track merged moving objects. In the proposed method, color histograms are extracted from feature information of each moving object, and the histograms are continuously accumulated so as not to react sensitively to noise or changes, and the average is obtained and stored. Thereafter, when a plurality of moving objects are overlapped and separated, the stored color histogram is compared with each other to correctly recognize each moving object. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed algorithms through some experiments.

  • Colored thread algorithm, suggested to be used for the label switching network, needs to be modified for the packet switching network. In this paper, it is recommended to add a merged state, besides the 3 states - null, colored and transparent - which are resulted from the behaviors of extend, rewind, stall, withdraw and merge events. The original colored thread algorithm is designed to generate a new thread and extend it to the downstream direction with unknown hop count when the thread has revisited the node that was visited. It also suggested rewinding the thread to the downstream direction by the source node, instead of rewinding it upstream direction by the revisited node. If a node received multiple threads which had a same forward equivalent class, then it checks first whether the hop counts are ascending or not. If it is in ascending order, then threads are merged. Otherwise the later thread is stalled until the former thread's color is to be changed to transparent or it is removed. This idea removes the effort of generating a new thread with unknown hop count.

  • VC merging involves distinguishing cells from an identical merged VC label. Various approaches have been proposed to help this identification process. However, most of them incur additional buffering, protocol overhead and/or variable delay. They make the provision of QoS difficult to achieve. So it was proposed a merge capable scheduler to support VC-merging (VCMS). However, in situations where all VCs are to be merged or the incoming traffic load is very low, it could happen that there are not enough non-merging cells to snoop. In this situation the scheduler uses special control cells to fill the empty time slots out. Too many control cells can cause high cell loss ratio and an additional packet transfer delay. To overcome the drawbacks, we propose a Sequence Skipping(SS) method where the sequencers skip the empty queues and insert SS cells. We show SS method is suitable for VC-merging and can reduce the cell loss ratio and the mean packet transfer delay through simulations.
