  • In this study, the optimal location of the MR fluid segments in a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate has been identified to maximize the natural frequencies and the loss factors. The finite element formulation is used to derive the governing differential equations of motion for a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate embedded with MR fluid and rubber material as the core layer and laminated composite plate as the face layers. An optimization problem is formulated and solved by combining finite element analysis (FEA) and genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain the optimal locations to yield maximum natural frequency and loss factor corresponding to first five modes of flexural vibration of the sandwich plate with various combinations of weighting factors under various boundary conditions. The proposed methodology is validated by comparing the natural frequencies evaluated at optimal locations of MR fluid pockets identified through GA coupled with FEA and the experimental measurements. The converged results suggest that the optimal location of MR fluid pockets is strongly influenced not only by the boundary conditions and modes of vibrations but also by the objectives of maximization of natural frequency and loss factors either individually or combined. The optimal layout could be useful to apply the MR fluid pockets at critical components of large structure to realize more efficient and compact vibration control mechanism with variable damping.

  • Meshless local collocation method produces much better conditioned matrices than meshless global collocation methods. In this paper, the meshless local collocation method based on thin plate spline radial basis function and first-order shear deformation theory are used to calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of laminated composite shells. Through numerical experiments, the accuracy and efficiency of present method are demonstrated.

  • The free vibration analyses of the isotropic and CFRP laminated composite rectangular plates with point supports at the fix edge is performed by FEM. We showed optimal position and mode shape of point supports that maximized fundamental natural frequency of the isotropic and CFRP laminated composite rectangular plates by each aspect ratio and the number of point supports.

  • In the present paper, free vibration analysis of angle-ply laminated composite annular and circular plates is performed by numerical methods. First-order shear deformation plate theory is used for kinematic relations. The related governing equations of motion are discretized via differential quadrature and discrete singular convolution methods. Frequency values are obtained for different lamina scheme, thickness-to-radius ratio, and mode numbers. The advantages and accuracy of these two methods are also tested in detail.

  • Two-way shape memory effect(TWSME) under residual stresses are considered in the present study. The structure using two-way shape memory alloy(SMA) concept returns to its initial shape by increasing or decreasing temperature under the initially given residual stress. In the present study, we use a thermo-mechanical constitutive equation of SMA and laminated composite plates are considered as simple morphing structural components which are based on first order shear deformable laminated composite plate with large deflection. Numerical results of fully coupled SMA-composite structures are presented

  • A simple solution for free vibration of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite plates in a thermal environment is investigated using a basic trigonometric shear deformation theory. By application of trigonometric four variable plate theory, the transverse displacement is subdivided into bending and shear components, the present theory's number of unknowns and governing equations is reduced, making it easier to use. Hamilton's Principle is extended to derive the equations of motion of the plates using Navier's double trigonometric series, a closed-form solution is obtained; the primary conclusion is that simple solution is obtained with good results accuracy when compared with previously published results, and the natural frequency will differ depending on, environment temperature, thickness ratio, and lamination angle, as well as the aspect ratio of the plate.

  • The laminated composite materials have been applied to various mechanical structures due to their high performance to weight ratios. In this study, we suggest a stochastic finite element scheme for the probabilistic analysis of the composite laminated plates. The composite materials consist of two different materials which constitute the matrix and fiber. The material properties in the major and minor directions are determined depending on the volume fraction of these two materials. In this study, the elastic modulus and shear modulus are considered as random and the effect of these random properties on the behavior of the composite plate is investigated. We adopt the weighted integral scheme in the formulation, which has been recognized as the most accurate method in the statistical methodologies. For verification of the proposed scheme, Monte Carlo analysis is also performed for the comparison with the proposed scheme.

  • This paper presents a four-noded quadrilateral $C^0$ strain plate element for the analysis of thick laminated composite plates. The element formulation is based on: 1) the third-order shear deformation theory; 2) assumed strain element formulation; and 3) interrelated edge displacements and rotations along element boundaries. Unlike the existing displacement-type composite plate elements based on the third-order theory, which rely on the $C^1$-continuity formulation, the present plate element is of $C^0$-continuity, and its element stiffness matrix is evaluated explicitly. Because of the third-order expansion of the in-plane displacements through the thickness, the resulting theory and hence elements do not need shear correction factors. The explicit element stiffness matrix makes the present element more computationally efficient than the composite plate elements using numerical integration for the analysis of thick layered composite plates.

  • The actuating performance of plate-type unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators having various stacking sequences was evaluated by three dimensional finite element analysis on the basis of thermal analogy model. Thermal residual stress distribution at each layer in an asymmetrically laminated plate with PZT ceramic layer and thermally induced dome height were predicted using classical laminated plate theory. Thermal analogy model was applied to a bimorph cantilever beam and LIPCA-C2 actuator in order to confirm its validity. Finite element analysis considering thermal residual deformation showed that the bending behavior of piezoelectric composite actuator subjected to electric loads was significantly different according to the stacking sequence, thickness of constituent PZT ceramic and boundary conditions. In particular, the increase of thickness of PZT ceramic led to the increase of the bending stiffness of piezoelectric composite actuator but it did not always lead to the decrease of actuation distance according to the stacking sequences of piezoelectric composite actuator. Therefore, it is noted that the actuating performance of unimorph piezoelectric composite actuator is rather affected by bending stiffness than actuation distance.

  • The composite sandwich plate is constructed by combining two laminated facings with high strength and a thick core of light weight material. The governing equations for the analysis of bending of simply supported sandwich plates with laminated facings are derived and analysed using the analytical method including the local shear deformations. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plate theory with composite facings to the laminate plate theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated facings, it is expected that the analysis is capable to analyze the general anisotropic laminated plates with global shear deformations.
